Rare Stockjock Posted June 22 #1 Share Posted June 22 It seems that there's an "i" missing somewhere.
undertone Posted June 22 #2 Share Posted June 22 Could not agree more, it is a constant source of amusement to us as New Zealanders when boarding an O cruise to hear that the i is still missing. I’m surprised there hasn’t been a “Letter Overboard!” alert before now…. 4
njhorseman Posted June 22 #3 Share Posted June 22 This has been discussed here numerous times over the years. Reportedly Oceania's founder, FDR wanted to name it Oceana, but because there was a cruise ship with that name he added the "i" and it became Oceania. However he pronounced it as if the "i" were not there so that became the accepted pronunciation. Personally I always pronounce it with the "i" . 3
Rare FetaCheese Posted June 22 #4 Share Posted June 22 Have heard crew and staff pronounce it both ways. I say it my way, and no one has ever corrected me!
EJL2023 Posted June 22 #5 Share Posted June 22 My pronunciation depends on how many glasses of wine I have had when asked to pronounce it for the inquiring folks. 2

Best answer. I use the "i" and my husband doesn't. We still know what we're discussing. 😐
Rare msn123 Posted June 22 #7 Share Posted June 22 As long as I am enjoying a cruise I don't care about the "proper" pronunciation! (This thread made me laugh.)
LSuzQ Posted June 22 #8 Share Posted June 22 Well, this gal from Virginia naturally pronounces it O-she-an-yuh!
