Crown Incident: Crew Issues

I'm asking this rhetorically I guess, b/c there's probably no real way to know, but I hope the crew of the Crown P doesn't get overlooked in the listing incident. Not to minimize the passenger concerns at all, but the crew experienced the issue and then had to get right back to work. I'm sure they must've been equally as scared as the pax, some were injured I know, I'm sure their was some damage to their personal items too.

It sounds like the crew did a great job through all of this. Hopefully Princess works with them to deal with their needs as well, whether that's counseling, or calling home, or reimbursing them for damaged goods. I'm guessing many of them are out tips for the cruise. Hopefully the Crown will be up and running soon so they can all keep their jobs.

Lot of folks seem to forget that when they get demanding and want their needs taken care of. Makes me believe they may have never experience a real catastrophe.

I would hope even with passengers getting refunds for their cruise fare they would leave (or expect to have) on their account their expenditures including tips.

The crew really make the cruise. I must say aside from the casino staff, the crew on Crown princess were incredibly friendly and memorable on my 7/2-7/11 cruise. Captain included. The news seem to be singling out the captain regarding the coast guard issue. Hopefully everything will be cleared when they finish their investigation.

Great Comments. The crew onboard Crown would be happy to hear that people are also concerned about their wellbeing.

As I posted on the other thread, our waiter told us that Princess will pay them the daily gratuities even when there are no passengers aboard. Princess takes good care of them. :)

Thanks Carol; I had missed this in the other threads. Really glad to hear it.

I overheard James Ley ask one crew member who was running a vacuumn if he had any sleep (this was yesterday morning) and he said, "no." Good point. I, once again, have to report that the crew was MORE than outstanding.

Cruizfan,

What was the problem with the casino staff?

Hi,

Let me start off by saying, I wish everyone a speedy recovery from the horrible incident. Crew and passengers!!!!

I was on the Crown 7/2 to 7/11 and loved the boat. Unfortunately, we had a few problems that we hope we can get some help with. WE were in an aft suite and the motion in the back for us was just horrible. Never did we experience anything like this before. We wonder if this was the beginning of some malfunction? We had addressed this with Princess before the incident.Alot of the amenities that we were supposed to receive we did not. A problem with leaving Brooklyn and a few other incidents.

Did anyone else experience any problems in the aft room or suites?

It was a magnificent boat otherwise, crew, food and would definitely try again.

All the tips and expenses that were charged prior to the fire on the Star were left in place so I'm sure they're going to do the same thing this time around. What got refunded was the cruise fare only. It's only fair to the crew since they not only had worked so hard during the cruise itself but incredibly hard afterwards, above and beyond actually.

I do hope that Princess takes good care of them as well, whether it's extra money or extra time off.

I was in an aft balcony and I also experienced TERRIBLE movement, thank goodness we were sailing with other people who had cabins more midship as I was able to take a shower and get ready in their room.

I was reading a post on the other Crown incident thread that I thought was telling. This person was on the Crown during the tilt and they had kind words to say about the crew, how difficult it must have been for them and how well they had performed.

Then the poster went on to say that the morning after, they had called room service and ordered a full breakfast, bacon, eggs etc. the staff member on the other end of the phone told them that it wasn't available, they were only doing continental breakfast on that morning.

Tha poster however was quite pleased with himself because when he played the - we are in an owner's suite card - he did get the full breakfast he wanted.

Maybe this comment of mine is out of place, but it did seem to me that if someone understood what the staff had gone through in the previous day, and how they were probably working overtime to clean up the mess, and likely working under less than ideal conditions in the kitchens, it was maybe unnecessary to insist on being served your full breakfast in your cabin. It is nice to praise the crew but might be even more helpful to relax your demands and try as best you could to make their jobs easier instead of more difficult.

Just my thought on reading that post and then seeing the concern for the crew expressed here.

we were on the 7/2 also

dolphin mini mid ship

thought that the ride was one of the smoothest we have encountered

however, we had dinner 2 nights in sabatinis

both times, the stern of the ship seemed to be moving in a lateral

motion. it didnt really bother us, however there was one couple who had to leave their meal as they felt some seasickness.

it should be noted that the during the entire cruise , we had moderate to calm seas.

did you really like the food?

aside from sabatinis and crown grill

we thought the food was pretty awful.

crew was good though all in all.

probably wouldnt cruise a 'grand class' ship again

toooo big and tooo many people for my liking.

I was on the ship during all this. And I definitely agree, the crew was AMAZING. Many were just as scared as the passengers. I spoke to several with stories much worse than mine. And they had no time to "recover" at all. Even some that were injured were still helping immediately. It seemed that every single crew member was called to help in some way. Most of them already work so many hours every day. And many were taking that time to sleep. But they went to work right away to take care of us and to clean. I am so amazed how quickly they cleaned things up. And to have dinner ready to start serving at 6:30? Amazing. Fortunately most passengers recognized this. But, as always, some people are just out to get what they can. Saw some yelling at crew for not getting everything they wanted, when they wanted, even though they didn't deserve it. Personally, I don't think the crew could have been much better!

At last, someone has asked about the crew. No one seems to have given them a thought until now.

Carol and Nancy have mentioned the crew several times in a lot of their posts.

It is true tho that they must continue on, no matter how scared or over worked they are. They are the ones we really have to thank for making our cruises a pleasant experience.

Nope, that's not accurate. I saw MANY CCer's hugging the crew and Carol asked our server, Simon, how he would fare if he was without pay (as Carol reported he said Princess would take care of him. My steward said the same thing). Many people were helping the crew and supporting them. I overheard several people thank them profusely and tell them they were wonderful. I saw several people hand some tips over and in general the crew and passengers worked well together.

I am not saying it was a love in, but it was a supportive environment.

I've noticed on several Princess ships that the casino staff is downright rude. I suspect it's because the casino is staffed by Carnival and not Princess.

Incidents like this always bring out the best in people and the worst in people.

We were in Aloha 753, the owners suite on the aft of the boat, and I thought the 7/2-7/11 curise was one of the smoothest, most enjoyable and excellent curises I've ever experienced, NO rocking in my room from the boat!

I worked onboard for Princess for many years, 80's - naughties.

In that time I worked through hurricanes, Med emergencies & abnormal sea conditions etc.

The Princess crew are highly trained for emergency situations, but they are also human.

To this day I still react in an emergency situation or even if I hear someone close by say "excuse me".

Princess training in cruising standards is in my opinion one of the best.

I wish I could switch it off now I live on land... but Im very glad I had it while at sea.

Sunshine,

You are my kind of person! I'd like to think that for most people, all they'd ask of the crew is how they were doing, and if they needed any help with contacting their families. :) Unfortunately, it isn't "most people" who stand out, for whatever reason or another.

Most crew on these ships are the salt of the earth. I give big kudos to Princess for taking care of them as Nancy and Carol have reported.

Everyone heading out on the next Crown cruise...please go gently on these people. They've had a really tough week!

As I said on another thread, I feel for Captain Andy Proctor who is the nicest man. I met him on the inaugural and was very impressed. He came ot the meet and greet to and has a wonderful sense of humor and personality. Reading the newspaper today it makes him sound suspect. He was not on the bridge at the time it says and makes it sound as if he did not call the Coast Guard personally though they don't know that. It disturbs me that they cast doubt on him when they don't know all the facts. He is above reproach I am certain.
