galelynn Posted November 18, 2006 #1 Share Posted November 18, 2006 We will be staying 2 nights pre=cruise at the La quinta on 26th ave. in May (arriving at 11:45 pm first night). We are wondering if we will need a rental car for 1st night and day time to get some goody (soda, beer, etc) for our 17 day Transatlantic cruise? Also the cost of a taxi from FLL to La Quinta, as it is after hrs. for the shuttle? Thanks:)

Bequia Posted November 20, 2006 #3 Share Posted November 20, 2006 The option to rent a car or not really depends on what you want to do. There are shops and restaurants within walking distance of the LaQuinta. With a car rental you'll have alot more options. You can spend a day shopping at Sawgrass Mills the largest outlet shopping mall in SoFla, or head to the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino or Gulfstream Park for some gambling. You may want to walk the broadwalk at Hollywood Beach and take a dip in the ocean. In Ft Lauderdale theres the water taxi and Las Olas. You could always head to South Beach, a 30 minute drive away, or the Miami Zoo, Biscayne Bay or Bayfront Park. Now to do any of the things mentioned it would be more economical if you rented a car versus taking a taxi everywhere. Taxi from FLL to your hotel should be less then $15. ;)
Rare geoherb Posted November 20, 2006 #4 Share Posted November 20, 2006 We've never rented a car in Fort Lauderdale, but also have never stayed more than just the night before our cruises. I was really surprised by the video that one cruise critic posted a few weeks ago that showed him and his DH driving down to Miami the morning of their cruise. We always enjoy a leisurely breakfast and a dip in the pool before checking out of our hotel and heading over to the port around 11 a.m. I'd never risk driving away from Fort Lauderdale that morning. I checked out the website for this LaQuinta hotel where it lists nearby attractions. There seems to be a strip center a block away with Barnes & Noble, Marshalls, Kmart, Just for Feet, Regal Cinemas, Dave & Buster's, Old Navy, and Ross. I'm sure there must be other stores nearby where you can buy sodas and other beverages.
