Odd annoying behavior

I'm not sure if this one has been posted yet because I think I may have skipped a page, but here's mine:

I hate it when people start of their conversations with "we've been on 125 cruises"....before anything else....and that's all they talk about. My feeling is, okay well now we're on THIS cruise so lets enjoy it! :D

Ladt Cruise We Had The Worst Table Compagnions. The Gentleman Next To Me Ate With His Baseball Cap On And The One Across From Me Pusched His Food On The Fork With His Fingers And Licked Off His Knife. Awful.

MMM nice! LOL This is one thing that sort of bugs me. I'm the more social one in our family. My hubby would rather be at a table for 2 for these reasons. It's just the whole, not knowing what your gonna get thing. It sounds snobby and it really isn't, he enjoys people he enjoys, but would rather not have to deal with anything uncomfortable on vacation. I feel like he might miss out on some of the great times you folks have mentioned, but I guess he'd wanna be more safe than sorry.

One cruise we were on we made freinds with our neighbors as we would talk on the balcony. We decided to have dinner together at the specialty restaurant, and it was all going great until the woman decided to get into a fight about when they should get married? We felt really out of place after that.

I guess you just take what you get and enjoy the whole experience. :D

This one really annoys me too. To some, it may not be a big deal because they probably don't know where the tradition of respect came from. From my days in the military and at sea, I learned never to wear a hat into a ship's mess-hall. During wartime, the mess-hall tables were used as first-aid stations and surgery tables to accomodate the multitute of injured sailors. According to tradition, you remove your hat in a ship's dining facility out of respect for the dead.

To read some of the posts around here about the decline in the dining room food maybe the same tradition will soon take hold on cruise ships, too!! :D

It's always interesting to read what annoys other people - I certainly have seen myself in at least one of the 'annoyances' and I guess it just goes to show "dif'rent strokes" for different folks. I don't set out to annoy, but I'm sure just as some people get on my nerves, I am guilty of the same in reverse.

I suppose the key, and I suspect most people get this, is to have a good chuckle about it and move on. My friends and I complain no end about things we've encountered on past trips, but it's really more of a good natured "omg, can you believe..." thing. We're always saying it with a smile.

For my part, I am most annoyed by constant/loud complainers who just can't seem to get through anything without complaining about it or blaming it on someone else. I saw a woman on my last cruise struggle with a door that was being blown shut by a gust of wind (I was too far away to help in time) and then mutter "unbelievable" and begin to complain (to nobody in particular) about how this was just one more way the cruise line was ruining her trip, as if somebody had deliberately turned up the wind just for her. For the whole cruise, I repeatedly ran into the woman, and she was almost always complaining to someone about something. After a while, it became fairly entertaining to hear what she was sniping about this time. :)

I agree:)

At just about any Navy club/bar, CPO club or Officers club you will find the following sign.

"He who wears his hat in here buys the bar a round of cheer"

And they did enforce it:)

Yes they did!!! The USCG NCO, CPO, and Officers clubs were the same way. It really sucked when you walked in when it was packed, heard that bell ring, and realized you didn't get your cover off in time.

On the other hand, it was great when it happened to others.:D

ROFLMAO, Ocean Boy! And thanks to all for the many chuckles on this thread. Now -- Ronney, honey, I'm with you: you just go on and wear that two piece, or bikini, or thong, or whatever it is and have fun! This really does seem to be a cultural thing; us poor ol' uptight Americans do get our panties in a wad about how much skin is parading around. No biggie -- just consider it as part of the floor show. After all, isn't people watching one of the funnest things to do on a cruise?? :D

The wife and I did a seven day on the Navigator from Miami at the end of October to the western Caribbean. It was my first and her second. We had a blast.

We had way too much fun to worry about most things. I did notice the elevator invaders because it happened almost every time and I wondered if they were even realized they were doing it. I didn't even notice the one floor users, I was probably looking out the glass. The style of dress was fun to observe, some made me shake my head and grin ;)and some just made me grin real big.:D Sometimes it was obvious they were from another culture and just didn't things the way I do. From the 9 or 10 year old little girl with no top to the 300+ pounder in a two piece.

With the behavior we put up with at work the odd behavior on the ship just wasn't important until it was rude and there was a little of that too. But reading this thread makes me realize that I can be an unconscious with my behavior and I am likely guilty of some what has been mentioned here.

We are on the Jewel this week and will try to pay more attention to my transgressions. I will likely have more to grin about. Maybe I'll keep a tally of those I notice.

Now of topic. Darwin (waiter) and Jenifer (assist waiter) were with out equal, we were blown away by their service. I wish I could say it better because it was far better than I have ever experienced.

Happy sailing everyone and thanks for all the help you didn't know you have provided to a newbie.

I can't believe I saw myself in this thread! Normally, I do have good manners---have to say that because of what I did. One day at the lunch buffet, I was really hungry, had no breakfast and up late the night before, so I picked up something from on my plate and ate in while in line, and then went on down the line getting the rest of my food. I didn't even think about it at the time. But now------after reading this thread-----

Tonight we went to a Chinese Buffet dinner. I saw someone put some salad dressing on her plate, dip her finger in to taste it, and I said to my family, how gross, now she is going to touch the utensils and sure enough she did. I do think there are many people who do that, but of course that doesn't make it right. I WILL NEVER DO THAT AGAIN.

I promise!!!!!

This has been a great thread. As I've read this I've remembered seeing or experiencing almost all the behaviors. It's all part of life, all part of cruising. You guys are wonderful for putting the humor, the reality back in these annoying behaviors. Thanks, Robin:cool:

First of all...I have been guilty of nibbling from my plate on return to the table..oops...I'll work on that one:) We sailed Explorer last week, so the little things are still fresh in my mind. WHY are there children even allowed into the "adult" activities...I can even look the other way that there were small children in the bars with their parents...but in QUEST??? I'm far from being a prude, but I don't think that is necessarily the place for kids to be hanging out!

And, I MUST share this little "experience" with you. On one afternoon at the pool deck, DH & I are lying comfortably in our chairs taking in some sun and I wouldn't have believed it had I not seen it for myself...but this family of 3 was walking by and decided to fill the empty chairs beside us. There was a husband, wife, and daughter in her late teens. They were not dressed in their swimsuits, but apparently planned to put them on at the pool deck. I turned around and the mother had taken off her top to reveal her black bra--meanwhile I'm trying to wake my husband up for validation purposes. When I turned around again, she had her white and black bikini top on. I can only assume that her bra turned into this when sunlight hit it:) Anyhow, this was not the case when it came to her bottoms. She pulled her pants off to reveal granny panties (yes, they were white). It wasn't pretty...she then tried to wrap the beach towel around her while she removed them to put her bikini bottom on. Believe me when I tell you that the towel did not provide enough coverage for her lower half as she had no secrets left when she was done with her transformation. What I don't understand is, What makes ANYONE think that this is okay behavior. The bathroom that was readily available for changing purposes was within sight of the area she actually changed in! I feel sorry for that young daughter, I would have died if my mother had ever done something like that...Seriously!?!

We were waiting in a very long line in the very hot sun for a taxi to take us from Port Everglades Pier to the airport. As we had a family of 5, 2 adults and 3 children, we were waiting for a van, not wanting to be split up. As each taxi pulled in, an employee was loaded each group at the front of the line into a waiting taxi as one arrived. The system was obvious, first come, first served. Yet some people tried hailing taxis on there own, as we all waited. One woman even jumped into a taxi as a couple was being escorted in a door on the other side. She yelled her head off when she was pulled from the taxi. Even my young teenagers expressed embarrassment at the behavior they saw.

when you wait at the bar for 10 minutes because the bartender is serving everyone around you.

Or when you wait 10 minutes because the bartenders are taking drink orders (over your head) from the tall guys behind you. One time there were about four of us "shorter" chicks at the bar and next in line, but noooo the bartenders kept talking right over us. I finally spoke up in my nicest "my grandma was a strong Southern woman who taught me a thing or two" voice ;) and insisted that we all were "next in line." We got our drinks, but those bartenders did not get any extra tip from us. What really bugged me was that not one of the "gentlemen" behind us spoke up and pointed out that we were next, and it was practically impossible to get the bartenders' attention. I didn't "need" that drink, but I did want it for sailaway.:D

Still, in the grand scheme of things, it pales in comparison to some of the downright dangerous behavior we've seen. This just bugs me, but it's not like it harms me.

first my pet peeve then a little story....

the peeve is a whole group of people or a family that has just wrapped up an evening of drunken merriment and then must rehash it in the hallway outside my door at 3 am laughing uproariously at every idiotic thing they did!

now the story, once while leaving N.O. sitting in the SMOKING section of the forward lounge i looked over my shoulder to see an old woman that resembled a prune staring at me intensely and frowning. To lighten the mood i said to her, "oh c'mon, the cruise just started. You should be smiling!:)

She replied, "i'm not smiling because of what YOU are doing!"

I promptly gave her directions to the NO smoking side of the lounge!:D

I have a two major issues when it comes to cruising. First, I agree with everyone who commented on kids running wild. Regardless of where it is, the pool, the solarium (which is supposed to be for adults only) and through the Buffet line. Parents need to be responsible for their kids. It really irks me when people just let their kids run loose because they don't want to look after them. They have total disregard for people who are actually trying to enjoy their vacation. There are signs posted that kids are not supposed to be in the hot tubs either. It's pretty simple, follow the rules. Also, I can't stand parents who try to tell other passengers how to act because their kids are right there. Take your kids to another part of the ship. I am not saying that kids don't belong on a cruise, but parents just need to be responsible and curtious to other passengers.

2) Pool Deck Chair Hogs. This is so rude. If you are not going to sit there right at that time, don't leave your towel there. Last year, I got up at 7 am the one morning because I wanted to enjoy the pool and I literally sat in my chair or around the pool area the entire day and this rude family took up about 10 chairs and did'n't come back till around 2:00 for the horse races. Totally rude. We had a group of 6 and could not sit together because they were rude and took the chairs. The second day at sea, I moved someones stuff because they had not come back for 3 hours. And I didn't feel bad about it.

I think I hit the trifecta during the last cruise vacation my then seventy-something grandparents took with my mother and me. Unsupervised children from a culture where standing in line is not stressed pushed my grandmother (who was luckily holding on to me for support) out of the way in order to rush onto the elevator...where they proceeded to push all of the buttons.
