Jeans Are Allowed...

Surf Girl I am with you on this debate. The ships are so big the dinning choices are many so why not keep everyone happy just allow jeans in every room on certain nights and on other nights require no jeans allowed. Someone in marketing should realize that they can give evryone an option each night of the week and post the daily rules well in advance so when people make reservation they know the dress code at that room for that night. It really should not be that hard. Why force those of us that prefer to dress up a little for dinner to put up with the belly buttons and low boy pants etc. NCL marketing should not allow the "jeans" every where people to force their rules on us. Lets just be sensible , make use of the huge ships and give everyone options "freestyle" should have options!

So' date=' with the announcement that jeans are now allowed in the diningroom, you would think this argument would go away.

[b']Not!![/b]

PE...

See, I knew your prediction would come true!

;)

Ok, now my personal feelings---I've said b4 that so long as you dress according to the cruiseline policy, I have no problems with what anyone wears. I'm not sure if I'll do jeans in dining rooms or not, but I have to agree with others that there should be some way those who want to dress formally should have that option in a dining room with others who are dressed the same. I sailed previously on a ship that did set aside one of the main rooms for those dressed formally (SUN) on one night, and actually thought it was a good idea. We didn't experience any problems getting into the other dining room that night.

I haven't seen any word on if the "alternative" dining rooms are relaxing their dress code, and I actually hope they stay with resort casual being a minimum. I love the ambiance that Le Bistro has (as an example) and although I'm a relaxed person, to me-jeans just don't fit in there. But it won't change my cruising pleasure one way or the other.

Well, that's fine. Different strokes for different folks. Some people like the big ships... I don't. You do.. and I'm sure you'll have a lovely time!
I actually like big and small ships. I just like to say that I'm going to Las Vegas in 6 days. :p

Monte...we've had snow 3 weekends in a row and are expecting snow again on Friday. I hope you don't get stuck. But if you do, I'm sure between PE and I, we could put you up. ;)

They predicted a bad night here last night but missed it. We ended up with rain last night on top of the snow we already had. Sheet of ice outside this AM. It's warmed up above freezing this afternoon but not enough to melt through it all. It's so slick out today I'm not moving. Not even to check on my kids car which he says slid off the road and into a ditch last night.

I want spring! Never had to shovel rain!

Crossing my fingers that you make it to Vegas! I left some money there on my last trip, feel free to pick it up for yourself!

Question: Does this mean I can wear my bibed overalls? They look like Jeans with a vest.

Wow I thought people were dressed a little "down" on our last NCL sun cruise. Now I don't think there will be even an air of class. I think the next thing will be "clean and neat" shorts and tank tops in the dining room.

This subject got me thinking. People on all the boards have been complaining about the food on many of the cruise lines. Well maybe "we" are getting what we asked for. If we dress like we are going to Denny's instead of a formal resturaunt then why should the cruise serve us as if we are in a formal rest and not Denny's? I think standards in dressing and food are being lowered across the boards. If standard go much lower the Dining room will again change to more buffet. Why should the cruise line have waiter and asst. waiters in a venue which more resembles cafeteria attire than formal dining room attire?

I will have to tell you that for the first two nights on our sun cruise we enjoyed the "freestyle" dining. But for some reason after that the wait times seemed to get longer and we missed seeing the same wait staff each night.

PS Just so you all know the Bibed overalls is a joke. I don't pack jeans much less overalls!

No matter where you stand "jeans/no jeans" I hope each of you have a wonderful next cruise

I have my first NCL cruise booked for this coming Nov. Are you saying that there are no formal nights?? Or are you saying that there are formal nights, but one does not have to comply and they can wear jeans if they wish??

All this has me SO confused. I just want to know what to pack...should my DH bother with even a suit jacket?? I'm certainly not going to have him pack the tux, which I'm sure will be over-kill.

I'm not complaining. It may actually be nice to pack a little lighter, I jsut want to be sure I know WHAT I'm bringing.

I know he won't be packing jeans...probably Dockers or something, but should he even bother with a suit?

What about the specialty restaurants??? We plan on eating there a lot during our cruise.

Don't be confused. Ever since Freestyle was instituted, NCL's formal nights have always been optional. So, regardless of whether they have officially done away with formal nights or not, it will be your choice to dress up or to dress casually - same as always.

Your DH should bring a jacket only if he feels like wearing it. He'll be perfectly fine with just the Dockers if he so pleases.

The dress code in the specialty restaurants is the same as the main dining rooms. Resort casual is fine every night.

Oh, that's just the start.... how about the teenage girls with the "how low can you go" jeans that show their thong underwear?

Ohhhhh a boy can hope! As long as NCL only allows girls no heavier than the one in the picture you linked to wear it...I just don't see a problem.

Having seen pics of Ms Spears out on the town, I have to ask if girls are still wearing underwear? ;)

Never mind, I see she dropped a few grand on those a day or two later.

Me, too! I'll be staying at the Mandalay Bay. Can't wait. Football playoffs and gambling - how can you beat that?
Really? We'll be at the Golden Nugget watching the Saints stomp whoever they're playing. You'll know us because my mom will be in her gold shoes, fleur d'lei earrings, gold and black cowboy hat, and she'll have a smoke in one hand and a drink in the other. I mean it. That's her get up. She still lives just outside New Orleans and has been a fan since the first season when they had season tickets to Tulane's stadium, where the Saints used to play.

Maybe we'll run into you while we're out and about.

OK...cruising...sorry...I got off topic. Jeans in the dining room...I don't care if someone wears jeans. But if the dress code says no jeans, then dont wear jeans. If it's now OK to wear jeans...more power to all the jeans wearers. :)

Good luck to you, your mom and the Saints. I'll be holed up in the Coral Reef Lounge at the Mandalay Bay where they have a huge-screen tv and lots of rabid fans. Mucho fun. I'm hoping that both the Jets and Giants will still be playing next weekend.

Back to the topic - I agree with you. Everyone should respect whatever the ship's dress code happens to be.

I would agree that it is a sign of the times that the cruise lines - not just NCL, are finally accepting that folks will no longer adhere to a strict dress code of any sort. What next, one wonders!

:) :D

I would have to agree with you......it is the sign of the times..things change, including dress style. I don't think the cruise lines are finally accepting that folks will no longer adhere to the strict dress code. I think the cruise lines are finally coming to realize this in simply 2007. Home styles change, car designs change, hairstyles change.....well you get where I'm going......

Not saying old fashion is bad.......just not for everyone

Yes Overalls are allowed provided they were made by the Red Kap, Carhartt or Pointers brands. No Dickies, Lees or Wal-Mart overalls allowed at dinner times but okay for breakfast and lunch. And no overalls allowed in the bowling area(Pearl only). Expect an extra charge for the dry cleaning of overalls over 2XX by the ship's laundry service. Tonight's movie will be

HeeHaw, The first season. Overalls suggested but not required and optional for ladies. Hey Grandpa, what's for dinner? I'm a pickin' and I'm a grinnin' and NCL is laughing all the way to the bank over their change of dress code.

What kisn of "Roll Call" did I start here? I'm just for dinner, it was nasty with all my friends who are going to go with me on March 2nd on the Pearl, come back and 4 sides of pure screaming about the Jeans policy!

Everybody should be happy! Jeans are now allowed for dinner! All of you have been complaining about it, that you could not wear them and now it is wrong again!

I agree...NCL...listen...there should be at least one out of the 11 Restaurants "FORMAL" for the more traditional cruisers, who love to dress up and want to feel special for one night...when does the need occur those days to dress up...for some it is importand!

To some of the questions...the Jeans I wore that night are Prada (skinny, low raise) Jeans and to be honest, that night after over 15 years of being formal for formal night...I felt like a rebell jumping around in Jeans on the ship! It was great! VACATION!!!

Next cruise I may would like to wear my Tux at formal night...so NCL give me a venue, so I could do that!

For me Freestyle means not just to dress down, it could mean as well to dress up for some people!

Optional Formal night was not posted on the "Fresstyle Daily" as far as I have seen, but most of people have been dressed up that night anyhow.

Ok...I wish you all a great night...

From what was explained on these boards about a year ago, NCL did away with one dining room being designated as "formal only" because they could not fill it and the other dining venues had long waits as a result.

That doesn't jive with the post about how most people want to dress up! The elimination of one dining room as formal only appears to have been done to accomodate more of the majority -- those who choose not to dress up.

I don't get the arguement about how those who wish to dress up rights have been taken away because of the option that people have not to dress up. YOU can still dress up, YOU can still go to any restaurant on the ship, YOU can do what you like.

Now look at what you are proposing: Make one dining room formal only: Now, YOU do not have the choice of any restaurant, YOU cannot do what you want, etc. By designating one dining room as formal only, you are stepping on others choices and that goes against the Freestyle concept.

and most importantly: WHY do people care about what other people are wearing????? You don't know these people and you most likely will never see them again. They don't care that you are wearing a suit or formal clothes, so why do you care that they are in resort casual????

The only answer I can think of is selfishness.

NCL has taken the magic and ambiance away from cruising with it's new "you're free to be a slob at dinner" policy and it's trend away from real cruise ships and towards tacky giant floating neon boxes where they can herd the masses in.

First of all, I don't agree that any magic or ambiance has been taken away from cruising with resort casual dining. Again, you want you own snobish view of what the dress code should be to infringe on what others feel makes the best cruise experience for them.

As for your comment about the large ships....there is a simple answer for it: Money! It saves them money to operate a larger ship. Why are all the Wal-Marts changing to Super Wal-Marts, why are companies merging with other companies that do the same thing??? It is cheaper to operate one larger store (or business) than it is to operate two smaller ones.

Take one of the new mega ships of over 3000 passengers. If that was two ships of 1500 passengers each, the cruise line would have additional overhead....two Captains, two Cruise Directors, two hotel managers, two production companies and probably the need for more waiters, casino staff, cruise directors staff and Security than one ship does. (I'm sure one large ship would need more staff than a small ship, but not double like with two ships.)

Money is also why NCL will never make one of the pay restaurants formal only, (even on one night). These restaurants generally sell out every night and I doubt they would fill it on a formal only night. Every open table costs them profit.

This bit about "comfort" and "not having enough money to dress for dinner" is just an excuse to look sloppy. Next, we'll see backwards baseball caps, t-shirts that say, "I'm with Stupid" and rubber shower flip flops at dinner. NCL has begun its descent down a slippery slope.

For those who can't "afford" to dress up.. you can buy a nice pair of Khakis for the same price (or less) as Jeans. They are also just as comfortable.

Nobody says you have to buy a Prada gown or a tuxedo.

To Sneakerstud... I'm still waiting to hear from last month about these $500 dollar jeans you claim to have bought. Who is the designer and what is the style?

Maybe the solution would be to designate one dining room each night as "no jeans." That way everyone would be happy.

I'll be sailing the Crown this June, as it's my favorite ship and want to make one last voyage on her before she's sold.. and that will probably be my last with NCL.

I haven't seen "you're free to be a slob at dinner" on any NCL policy:confused:

Where did that quote come from?

In the past, NCL, at least on the Dawn, designated the Venetian as the "formal" restaurant on optional formal night.

I assume that the restaurant was not filling up on that evening and, hence, they did away with that idea.

We always eat at a speciality restaurant on optional formal nights to avoid the crowds. Perhaps there were no crowds.

You way think your bib overalls was a joke but I have alrady seen them on the "new and refined" NCL line. This past May I was on the Crown out of Philadelphia and I never saw a worsedressed group of folks out side of a construction gang.

One couple wore dark green work uniforms all week. I originally thought it was a couple of workers from the engine room on deck for some air but when they showed uop in the dining room that evening in the same garb I knew it was some of NCL's great new passenger mix. Saw several bib overalls and several gungarees with the hammer loops, ever charming in any social setting.

As to the dining room being converted to buffet and the lowering of the staff standards, I have predictedthis for over a year and I understand that the new "uniform" consitst of white shirts and black slacks instead of a nice formal type uniform.

Hey no problem, keep the fares just a tad above a cruise around Manhattan Island and eventually you will get ecatly that but for six days a quality cruise around Manhattan Island but stretched to include a bunch a dirt poor islands.

Happy New Year to everyone and Happy Casual no ambaince crusing
