Tipping for room service?

I am taking the Coral Princess Alaska cruise in August. We will want to have room service for breakfast on our balcony (assuming the weather is ok). I know Princess adds the $10/per day for tips. Does this include room service?

Thanks

No it does not include room service. Most people tip 1 or 2 dollars. More if you are getting a whole meal.

Breakfast from room service consist of only continental breakfast unless you are in a suite.

You can also do the Ultimate balcony breakfast for $25.00 per couple.

While I do give extra tips for room service it is actually included in the daily rate(you know those "service" people are listed but not specifically named). An officer also said they are included in the per diem....

While I understand that room service is included in our daily tips, we have always given the person delivering the room service a $1 or $2 tip depending on what is ordered. We have never ordered the ultimate breakfast but I would probably tip more for that. My family goes by the expression that "it's only a couple of dollars to us but much more for them." They always seem so surprised to get a tip, so tipping must not be that usual. I have noted that once we give the first tip, we never have any problems getting speedy room service after.

Thanks for the clarification.:) I also like to tip the person delivering the food. They do seem surprised sometimes to get a tip and 1 time I had to chase the guy down the hall.

Actually, I was a bit surprised on our last cruise... on the back of the room service - breakfast door hanger, it has a place to add a tip... that is the first time I've ever seen that. I really think it's something they just added this past year.

It has been there for sometime that we have seen. Maybe two years or more on all the ships we have sailed on, at least 5 or 6 in the past two years.

I was always told that room service DID NOT share in the tip pool, that is why they added that gratuity line on the back of the room service menu that you sign. Now I am really confused about room service tipping.

Although, we will continue to tip room service personal just as we always have.

I had read that the drink servers are also in the pool and even if you add a tip to your drink bill that it goes to the tip pool, not the server.

I read on a crewmember's site that if you drop the automatic tip and give the tip directly to a crewmember that they have to turn this money into the tip pool. However if you leave the auto tip in place, anything you give them additionally they can keep.

Hi DRPack..

How would they know that someone dropped the auto tip, and....

How would someone know that I put money in an envelope for my steward??

Good question.

When you have anytime dining and have lunch in the dining room everyday, how would anyone know if you do automatic tips, self tipping at the end or give no tips?

I bet no one knows. On the last cruise we had a different waiter at every lunch and dinner and no one on anytime dining knew who we were. I call that anonymous dining cause no one gets to know you.

I will do auto tipping but it spreads so thin. So, If I dont auto tip and parse my money out to those that waited on me, ie, $10 per day in cash divided up, the money goes into a pool? Doesnt make sense to me.

Direct from Princess: http://www.princess.com/faq/onboard_experience.html

Question: What are the tipping guidelines for my cruise?

Answer: During your cruise, you will meet many members of our staff in a variety of locations as they provide you with excellent service. Additionally, many more crew behind the scenes support those who serve you directly. For your convenience a Hotel and Dining charge of $10 per passenger per day (including children) will be automatically added to your shipboard account on a daily basis. The Hotel and Dining charge will be shared amongst those staff who help provide and support your cruise experience, including the wait staff, stateroom stewards and accommodations staff, buffet stewards, galley staff, laundry staff and others.

Casino dealers and Lotus Spa personnel do not share in the Hotel and Dining charge as not all passengers utilize these services.

A 15% charge is automatically added to your bar charges and dining room wine account. This is shared amongst the beverage staff and their support staff, including cleaners and utility staff.

They have access to the list of passengers and know who has removed the auto tip. One of our stewards said that she never looked at the list; another said that he knew who had kept the auto tip on.

Technically, they wouldn't know if you put money in an envelope for your Room Steward, but all the crew are required to report cash tips or risk being fired and put off the ship at the next port  . I don't think many would take that chance.

I agree with drpack. This is the way things work :) .

And to answer the OP's question, we do tip Room Service at least $2.00.

In anytime dining no one ever asked our names. we just followed the maitre d to a table and we ate in both dining rooms without reservations.

i dont think the wait stafff has a clue who does the auto tipping and who doesnt. On the CB there are 3000 cruisers and it would be impossible to tell.

I am happy to tell you why I intend to have the auto tip removed.

1. I don't believe in being told how much and whom I shall tip. I do follow the American dream while in the US, however in international waters ?? Who is kidding who? Helping cruise lines to pay wages

2. If we book through Carnival Australia we do not get any onboard

credits whatsolever! They tell me you guys can do quite well out of this, enuf to pay your A/tips on a 10 day cruise, Lucky ewes.

3. To make it worse, we do not/cannot join Captains Circle, therefore we do not get any of the platinum/elite beneifts.

We are about to make our 4th Princess cruise, 3 out of Sydney the one coming up out of NY. I got a sheet of paper in my tickets received last week, stating this. blah blah blah, but it is totally a discretionary charge and may be removed.

Full marks for guess what we intend to do :D

I should have been clearer. I was talking about the room steward when I said if you drop the auto tip and pay them direct they have to turn it in. It's pretty obvious what passengers they are servicing and they know who drops or changes the auto tip. Especially now that you have to explain why you are dropping the tip. I read this in another CC post.

We know how you feel on tipping from your other posts, but the OP was asking about tipping room service not removing tips.

Maybe you do not recieve any onboard credits because this is used to make up the tipping deficit? I don't honestly know why you do not recieve OBC's.

I would be upset not to be able to advance up the tiers to platinum and elite too. When we visited NZ many years ago tipping was not expected, people were expected to do their job. Different cultures and there's no right or wrong, it's different. I would prefer there be no individual tips and the cruise line built it into the fare but until that happens my culture dictates I tip and i do.

When my children were in college and were working in restaurants or as caterers, here in the jolly old USA and although they were earning a salary they depended greatly on the tips they would receive.

It made me so aware of how much these tips meant to these hard working young people....nothing has changed....serving the public, in any capacity, is very, very hard work and when a job is done very well it deserves to be recognized by us! Tipping is the way to do it!!!!!!!!! I don't care what "land" you hail from.....
