Thanks for that FoundLove@Sea.

Carlz believe me from what I saw in the Police force convinced me that when your time is up, your time is up. I saw car accidents where the car was nothing but scrap metal and the driver walks away with a scratch and other accidents where the car had a scratch and the driver was dead.

Grab life at every opportunity as you never know when that time will come.

It is never nice when a family member is taken suddenly, I feel for the family at such a sad time.

This report says that the ship is returning to Sydney, but hey who believes what they read in the papers.

Anyone have a friend on the cruise to find out exactly what is happening. I am just wondering because I am due to sail out on Saturday on the Sun?

The ship was always returning to Sydney from Noumea, it was only a 3 port cruise; Isle of Pines Monday, Ouvea Tuesday (didn't end up calling there) and Noumea Wednesday. So there's no change there, other than not going to Ouvea and having 2 days in Noumea instead.

It's very sad isn't it :( His poor family. I do feel sorry for P&O too as it's just another excuse for the media to drag P&O through the mud. Last news update I heard that speculations that the man had been involved in a fight were untrue and that his death is not being considered "suspicious". All the same though it's a terrible shame for someone so young to die suddenly.

It doesn't matter which article you read, they ALL mention the Brimble case. Understandable if the case was suspicious but when there is no evidence of it being supicious, the Brimble case shouldn't come into it.

I don't know what the Brimble case has to do with this poor man's death but just about every article mentions it in the last line of their story. Boy, they've got some mileage out of that haven't they! If it had been an older man then he wouldn't have even got a mention. It's because he is so young that they are suddenly trying to beef it up into a 'headline'. I hope his wife and child are getting all the support they can at such a time.

Well its Motoman here on board Sun docked in Noumea. Due to the fact net access is expensive I will be brief. I witnessed CPR being performed on this person on the floor in the doorway of the toilet outside Legends bar around 1:30am Tuesday morning. I was in the casino at the time and heard a 'Code Alpha' coded announcement over the ships PA (broadcast in cabins as well). The crew responded quickly. The toilet was sealed and guarded as a crime scene. The captain announced the next morning that due to a death the ship would sail to Noumea and miss Ouvea. The ship reached Noumea and docked around 2:30pm Tuesday and was met with local police. The police were seen in the toilet taking photos and other crime scene duties.

Lots of rumour and speculation currently going throughout the ship but after speaking to 2GB's Pete Graham I have reason to believe that it was most likely an Asthma attack as it has been said he was found with a puffer in his hand.

P&O have flown his family out to Noumea.

God bless the family of the deceased and don't always trust what you hear let the police decide what happened. Being a cruise ship there is lots of wispers and talk but only time will tell what really happened.

Thanks for sharing your info Motoman.

I've been home all day with the TV on and i've noticed that the news headlines have not mentioned the story once since about 10am.

Will be interested to see if it makes the 6pm news (in the headlines anyway).

I'm sure that shows like TT & ACA will no doubt try to link the asthma attack to an earlier scuffle though - you know what they're like!

It is quite amazing how anything that happens on a P&O Ship at the moment makes the front page or the first headline. I'm quite sure tragic things happen in many resorts and hotels around Australia ever day and we never hear a thing about them (unless they involve a football team of course!).

Thanks motoman for your post. Some people do not realise how dangerous an Asthma attack can be. I lost a very close friend in his late 20's to an asthma attack when he was on a skiing holiday at Kosciusko about 30 years ago. Many think it only affects the young but it can also get you when you are older.

My prayers go out to the family.

 You know what really frustrates the hell out of me..... The fact that the media were so quick to jump on the bandwagon in regards to this incident and yes, yet again bring up the Brimble case and bag P&O and now that (oh my gosh- shock horror) it doesn't look suspicious and they have dropped it like a hot potato! In my opinion, the fact that they are not reporting anything is almost as bad as reporting lies. We are very lucky that we are on these boards and have been able to find out what has been going on but to the general public, all they heard was another death on P&O and then........... nothing.

Couldn't agree with you more Liz! Most people already have a low opinion of cruising & P&O due to the media's handling of the Brimble case. It's a shame they never report all the GOOD stories that happen on board P&O ships! How many times have Today Tonight been waiting at the wharf to report a story of another successful cruise with 100% happy passengers??? But as soon as there's a minor (or major) upset, they're out there in droves fighting each other for the story! It's disgusting!! I reckon they should do a report on the news that the death was not suspicious and put everyone's minds at ease. But they won't :(

I agree, Mum was saying to me I can't believe you go on THOSE ships. Bunch of drunken people yada yada. For one thing is that what she thinks of me. (don't tell her) and it is all because of the media.

The poor family of the gentleman, if he did die from natural causes and not involved in the brawl etc, imagine how they must be feeling when they hear the media.

IMHO, the media has not let up after the Brimble thing, because P&O made some gross errors of judgement. Unfortunately, what happened to Ms Brimble happens in the backstreets of our cities every week. However, P&O's rush to protect their image allowed the "men of interest" to tamper with the evidence. I agree this is old news, but P&O needs to rebuild their credibility before the media will give up. When the word of a crime scene being established was released, the media would have been buzzing.

I am deeply saddened by the recent death. I can imagine how excited the family would have been when they set off.

I applaud P&Os handling of this event. They stated from the beginning that there was no apparent suspicion, but they alerted security & set up a crime scene anyway. They have also taken steps to support the family. This proves that a major lesson has been learnt, and has done a lot towards restoring their lost trust & reputation.

Just my thoughts,

Geoff

The Media will probably keep quiet now until the coroner's report, they stick their feet in their mouths too many times, plus non-suspicious circumstances doesn't sell as many ads.:(

But I was always told to look for the silver lining.

Bad publicity - Cheaper Cabins:rolleyes:

It would appear P&O have learned a lot of lessons since September 2002, in handling tragic occurences like this on board, and also in their dealings with the family's and in some ways more importantly, the media.

Congratulations to P&O for this.

Unfortunately in these days of easy communication things like this are always going to hit the media. We all know how rumours spread on ships, and these days with internet and satelite phone coverage it's easy for these ship board rumours to be beamed back to Australia and blown out of all proportion (as we saw in this instance).

Thank you Motoman for your on the spot reporting.

Kym

  • Cruise passenger found dead in ship's toilet
  • Passengers claim man hit in fight over $20
  • "Tension in bar" over "10 guys doing shots"

PASSENGERS leaving a P&O ship yesterday insist a drunken fight took place before a man was found dead in a toilet.

The body of a 31-year-man from Dulwich Hill, in Sydney's inner west, was removed from the Pacific Sun after the ship docked in Sydney about 5am yesterday.

The man, who had won the cruise holiday as part of a radio competition, was discovered dead in a toilet early last Tuesday morning.

Passenger, lawyer Stephen Letheby from Forbes, told The Sunday Telegraph two women ran into the ship's Legends Bar about 1.30am screaming for help.

He said a woman screamed: "He's been king hit, he's on the floor and he can't get up", minutes before the man was found in a toilet cubicle.

"I was in Legends when a girl came running into the bar absolutely hysterical," he said.

"Then another girl came running in looking for help and she was equally distraught."

Mr Letheby said he thought there had been a dispute between a group of men earlier, possibly over a woman or a $20 bet.

Dozens of passengers yesterday told of rumours of a brawl between a group of men and at least two women and that drugs may have been involved.

Lisa and Kingsley Driver said they had to leave the bar shortly after 1am because there was a dangerous "tension" in the air.

"We left five minutes before it all happened because it was so tense and we had a feeling a fight was going to break out," Mrs Driver said.

"There were about 30 people in the bar and the tension was between a group of about 10 guys.

"They were doing shots."

"If I'd been working behind the bar, I would have stopped serving them alcohol or at least warned security something might happen."

Mr Letheby said he was annoyed that he hadn't been interviewed by police.

Detective Senior Constable Tony Harris confirmed homicide squad detectives were assisting with inquiries and that foul play had not been ruled out.

P&O spokeswoman Libby Moffet denied reports of a fight in the ship's bar.

I'll leave it at just that........
