AnneBonney Posted September 14, 2007 #1 Share Posted September 14, 2007 It looks as if we will be sailing on the Westerdam in March (woohoo!) and I was just wondering if someone could tell me what areas of the ship are off limits to kids -- ours will be 5 & 10 at sailing. Thanks,
GmaPajama Posted September 14, 2007 #2 Share Posted September 14, 2007 As best I can remember, the Aft Pool is adults only. Kids are not welcome on bar stools at the bars, nor in the casino. Other than that, I've seen them everywhere - and those who sail with HAL have impressed me as being very well mannered. There was a delightful 7 year old in our CruiseCritic group recently, and we loved running into him. You should have SEEN him in his little suit and tie. What a sweetheart! I think the trick to seeing children welcomed is to have a parent welcomed at the same time. :)
eh2zed Posted September 14, 2007 #3 Share Posted September 14, 2007 I can't think of anywhere else either.
sail7seas Posted September 14, 2007 #4 Share Posted September 14, 2007 Sometimes I have seen parents requested to remove children from CrowsNest after a certain time in the evening. Most of them would usually be in bed by that time anyway.

Children under 14 (or something like that) had to be supervised by their parents.

Homosassa Posted September 14, 2007 #12 Share Posted September 14, 2007 AnneBonney, If you are on the March 16 sailing, join the roll call thread. So far three people are on the thread. Two of the posters are traveling with young children.

tomc Posted September 14, 2007 #15 Share Posted September 14, 2007 Ah, but is there a surcharge for the boogie boards? Boards are free, but you must use HAL's rope; rental is $10/foot/minute.

Two if by Sea Posted September 14, 2007 #17 Share Posted September 14, 2007 I wish I could find out for certain the status of the Aft pool for our sailing. I can live with it either way but it would be very helpful to be able to tell her the rules in advance, and I don't want to make it off limits to her unless it really is -- especially if we're living on that deck. Surely "children under 14 must be supervised" applies to ANY pool at any time! So that isn't exactly a restriction. When I was 6 and on a ship, my status as a child got me into ANY area of the ship, even those off-limits to adults. I'm pretty sure I was welcomed on the bridge -- and in the cockpits of airplanes, for that matter. Those days are long gone....
COLandlocked Posted September 14, 2007 #18 Share Posted September 14, 2007 Actually, on our last cruise, May 2007, our 8 yo son sat in the cockpit of the airplane and the captiain evan showed him which buttons to press, let him move the throttle, and let me take pictures. Then on the cruise, we did a bridge tour and he sat in the Captian's chair while the Captian explained things to him. He has traveled a lot and is very well mannered (I know, he is mine, but he really is). he wears a suit and tie, with little to no complaint, on formal night and is respectfull of others. On our RCCL cruise he was not allowed in the suite lounge after 5:00pm and we were very respectful of that. Even when we stopped by to confirm a reservation, he would stay outside the door. But we did keep him away from the adult poor and we stayed away from the kid zone. Worked for everyone involved.

He wears his pilot hat and glasses, and gets invited up to all the cockpits before the flights take off. He chats with the pilots about the 787 he saw in Everett before it rolled out. He's been lucky enough to see the cockpits of the 717, 737, 757, 767 and Airbus 320. We have a ball on cruises as well.

I had a few drinks there. Sure loved the Rocky Mountains. Stayed in Estes Park. Robb
