Roboat Posted August 30, 2004 #1 Share Posted August 30, 2004 I'm GUESSING that, with all the forecasting models, and close operating margins, Caribbean cruises are rarely cancelled anymore. Is this true? I would guess they re-route several times a year, which can be a pain for the Pax, but the ship still gets the revenue. Has anyone had a Caribbean cruise actually cancelled due to weather in the past 5 years? How about delayed departure or return?
Randyk47 Posted August 30, 2004 #2 Share Posted August 30, 2004 Rerouted once but never cancelled.
jhannah Posted August 30, 2004 #3 Share Posted August 30, 2004 I haven't ... but then I don't sail there during hurricane season.
spcl4cs_gal Posted August 30, 2004 #4 Share Posted August 30, 2004 My guess is that they are re-routing this week so they don't land in St Thomas on the same day that Frances is scheduled to be there. Looks like another western swing for the crew. :)
sail7seas Posted August 30, 2004 #5 Share Posted August 30, 2004 I have never heard of an HAL cruise being cancelled due to weather. There have been missed ports, altered/changed itineraries but I am not aware of a totally cancelled cruise.
Krazy Kruizers Posted August 30, 2004 #6 Share Posted August 30, 2004 All we have had happened was to change a couple of ports. No big deal - we still enjoyed the cruise - listened to others complain because they paid for certain ports, blah, blah....
elmorejj Posted August 30, 2004 #7 Share Posted August 30, 2004 I`m with you KK, these type of pax should read the small print before they start to complain. The Capt. has the right to not visit any ports on a cruise if there is inclement weather....jean
trubey Posted August 30, 2004 #8 Share Posted August 30, 2004 I'm curious. What happens when the ship can't get into port to start or finish a cruise? Do the returning passengers get extra days at sea? Do those who couldn't board get any reimbursement?
sail7seas Posted August 30, 2004 #9 Share Posted August 30, 2004 Only one time have we had a port cancelled due to weather......and that was last Thanksgiving on "MY" Maasdam . That is remarkably good luck for us seeing how much and how long we have cruised. We have had ports cancelled for a number of other reasons (dock workers strike, pilot strike, a buoy out of place in a harbor, mechanical problems slowing down the ship etc etc). Whaddyagonna do? Moan and groan and carry on......or go on about enjoying yourself? Whether you bellyache or not, the port is still going to be bypassed. If there were a chance a change in decision would result there might be some rationale to the complaining.....but no change is going to be made. Then they start in with one of my Least favorite words: Compensation. I reallly, really dislike when passengers whip that one out. Go get a frozen umbrella drink and chill out!! Sorry...JMHO
DFD1 Posted August 30, 2004 #10 Share Posted August 30, 2004 We were forced to bypass GC last january on the Oosterdam and I never heard a word about anyone expecting to be compensated...thank goodness. I never cease to be amazed at the things some people expect others to do for them. You're dead on about this one S7S.
Roboat Posted August 30, 2004 Author #11 Share Posted August 30, 2004 Thanks for your information. We wouldn't care that much about being re-routed. You seen one beautiful paradise, you seen 'em all. ;)
lipoppop Posted August 31, 2004 #12 Share Posted August 31, 2004 We have some friends who were sailing out of New York to Bermuda and got rerouted to Canada because of the damage due to a hurricane. They are Canadians and weren't very happy but there was no other choice.
