murphysmum Posted October 18, 2007 #1 Share Posted October 18, 2007 Hello.... I just returned from a cruise out of Venice on Splendor of the Seas. I've cruised before on both large and small ships and never noticed the following problem. Our family had two mini-suites 8048,50 (close to mid-ship) and we experienced noticeable vibration during most of the trip. We were also seated toward the back of the upper level of the dining room and could see the water in our glasses vibrating. The seas were very calm. We did get used to it and had a lovely time, but I did feel a bit queasy at times from the unpleasant sensation. However, my question is "What causes this and is there any way to know when/if a particular ship will have this problem?" We have two cruises planned fairly soon...The Quest in February through Panama Canal and the Paul Gauguin in May in Tahiti. I know that both are older ships and I'm curious if the age of the ship has anything to do with it. Previous cruises have been on newer Princess, Regent, RCCL and a Nile cruise and we never felt vibration. Other than the vibration, which we all adjusted to, I have nothing but good things to say about the Splendor. The staff was wonderful in every way and the food was excellent. I'm a reader so I don't have much to comment on about shows, casino, etc, but my niece said all were quite nice. Thank for any feedback anyone can give me and I'm sorry this seems to be so "wordy". murphysmum;)
aimmike&meg Posted October 18, 2007 #2 Share Posted October 18, 2007 We noticed that too no the Splendour in March and we just chalked it up to being a smaller ship becuase we have never felt that much vibration either on any of our other past cruises. It wasn't terrible just a bit strange at times.
zantedeschia Posted October 18, 2007 #3 Share Posted October 18, 2007 I have to confess I've sailed Splendour 3 times and never noticed a vibration. Not to say there wasn't one, I probably tuned it out like I did other background ship noises, like the engines, etc.

cb at sea Posted October 18, 2007 #5 Share Posted October 18, 2007 This happened to us on Brilliance--we didn't feel it everywhere--just as you got toward the aft section of the ship. Hasn't happened on any other ship, soooo.....I'm thinking it's just a random occurance. (Do ships get out of alignment????)
mitchrock Posted October 18, 2007 #6 Share Posted October 18, 2007 I find the more quarters I put in the slot, the more the Splendour and the vibration. :D
Lady Chew Posted October 18, 2007 #7 Share Posted October 18, 2007 We experienced the same thing at our table in the dining room (upper level). Our table was shaking so hard that you could actually hear the silverware & china clinking, see the wine vibrating ... no tables around us or below us had any vibrations. Every night ... a 12-night cruise. The ship was not even moving during two meals. Mr. Chew is an engineer ... said we must have been right on top of a "resonance point" on our deck ... vibrations were basically climbing up the walls from the engines and coming out from the floor. One couple came for dinner the first night and the wife seemed very unnerved by the shaking ... they never came back! The rest of us had a lot of fun with it.
