Train from Alexandria to Cairo ??

We are wondering if anyone has traveled independantly from Alexandria to Cairo by train and organised a tour from there .

We are heading to Alexandria in Feb 08 with Costa cruises for 1 day and want to get as much time in Cairo as possible without being in slow moving tourist caravan .;)

Long trips on a cramped tour bus are not my idea of fun and would much prefer to do the trip by train if it is relyable and there is not much to see between Alexandria and Cairo.

Hi...the answer to this is yes..its great...do it. It has been discussed at great length...if you do a search youll get some of the threads about this subject. Any additional specific questions, i for one am more than happy to answer for you..... from memory...some of the previous threads got a bit heated at various stages!

Thanks , good to hear it is is safe and has been discussed before , I will look these up.

Is it easy to join organised tours once in Cairo . Do they leave from near the train station?

.

Easiest thing to do is to grab a taxi outside the station. Interview a group of the drivers...take the one who speaks the best english, tell him where you want to go. and negotiate a days rate.

For Example It would be easy to go to Giza for an hour, come back to the Egyptian museum 1 - 2 hours, then the Bazzar for an hour, and if you have time and the desire visit the Coptic church.

Youll see a great deal of the city which is fascinating and you may have time to go to either Mena House Oberoi at Giza for lunch or the Omar Kayham Hotel and Casino (A Palace built for Princess Eugene) right beside the nile.

It depeands on what your interests are but these are the basics.

Id offer him between $usd50 - $100 depeanding on how hard you bargain and how generous you want to be for really good service.

Get the right guy and and have the right attitude you'll have the time of your life!:D :D :D

While researching for an upcoming East. Med. cruise that includes an overnight at Alexandria, Egypt, I stumbled on a website that has a wealth of train info including going by train from Alexandria to Cairo. Take a look at seat61dotcom or do a search for Who is the Man in Seat Sixtyone? He has a great, informative website.

Sarge -

Did you end up taking the train? If so, I would love to hear how it went. Headed to Alexandria in April on Jade and would love to do the train but would like to hear some recent experience.

Thanks,

Clay

Are you on the April 11th Jade cruise stopping for 2 days in Cairo? So are we and we are also considering the bullet train as it is only 2 hours, 15 minutes compared to bus that is 3 hours. We have also located a private English speaking guide who would pick us up at the ship, so we're really torn. We don't want to be too sheltered from the reality of Cairo.
