we had lovely lunch at the Sailing club you can see in the background, other than that.......there is not much else if you dont plan on doing a tour. Chez

The club does a roaring business when a ship tenders ashore there.

Its a nice spot,as long as the ship provides an efficient shuttle service into Cairns.

would that affect immigration if they left aussie waters? not sure about that.

it does seem silly for a cruise that long and probably with lots of americans on board who were told not to take alcohol with them like they do back home. Then be told sorry you cant even buy it. It all seems very odd especially when it could be easily fixed with a quick detour

It doesn't on the Qld Coastal cruises - passports aren't required.

No, it's easy. Particularly if you're doing a Qld Coastal cruise which stays in Cairns until 2am.

Thanks Kym, sorry didnt see that one;)

We havent cruised the Queensland coast, so not too sure of the times they dock, but as Kym said, plenty of time to see lots, Kuranda, drive to Port Douglas etc if there is a couple of you or more, much cheaper than tours, do some research before you go, contact the Tourist info centre and get some brochures and maps and plan a great day out!!

Im pretty sure taht the ship is supposed to get in at like 10am or something. I remember my mum saying when i phoned them that morning in cairns that we were there early. I think we docked at 7 in the morning or around then. But then again, we also stayed in cairns the next day until 6:30pm because the weather at port douglas was no good for tendering.

My 2c I'm not sure what the answer really is but on our Sun cruise, dh walked onboard without a problem in NZ with several bottles of wine - a person in front of him and someone a couple behind both had bottles of spirits "taken" and told they would be returned on the last sea day..... we were also out at Portside to see "our" ship (big sighhhhh) and also chuckled at the super business the liquor store was doing!

Have a wonderful time Gooch - will be with you in spirit:D

Jane

We did the Sapphire this year from Sydney to LA and had no problems bringing on bottles of spirits in NZ or at any of the ports for that matter. Even found a place that sold us spirits on a Sunday in Pago Pago when we were told they are not supposed to. They just asked if we were off the ship and if so to be discrete, i.e. dont tell anyone where we got it :D

Nothing like enjoying a quiet drink on the balcony under the stars :)

Two nights ago we were supposed to leave Whitsunday at 5:30

p.m. At 8:30 the captain came on and told us the anchor was stuck! The winch wasn't working. We finally got out of there at 10:30 p.m. which meant we were late to our next port. Our tour was cancelled. So we just stayed on the ship. DH says this ship is being run by clowns.

We did bring on wine at Brisbane.

A few questions you asked:

Soda card is $4.95 per day.

Buffet is open most of the time, even late into the night.

Anytime Dining is definitely missing.

Australian power is available in cabins as is 110V US, too.

Casino is very small and 1/4 of the machines aren't working. There are only 1 cent and $1 machines, all of the video type. Only a few tables, too.

They have tried to fix the blower on our AC twice now and it still is roaring.

This morning about 4:45 a.m. they sent a team to C401 for something. I'm paranoid so I looked over the rail. I thought I could see smoke, but it was probably just the lights from a cabin shining on the mist from the waves.

Sorry, I'm not finding time to read all your replies. Costs too much!

Linda,

I hope things improve for you. I get the impression from your posts that you are not having the best time! It seems to be one thing going wrong after another. I imagine that you are at the stage where you constantly expect something else to go wrong!

I really hope things settle down, and you are able to relax and enjoy the rest of your cruise.

Jo

It isn't a terrible cruise, it is just that once things start going wrong you notice everything!

Last night aroun 1:10 a.m. I noticed the ship was stopped. I looked over the rail and there was a small boat coming alongside. I figured they were transferring the reef pilot, but the ship remained stop for at least 45 minutes. I wonder if it were a medical evacuation?

The Aussie power is by the TV. So if you plan to bring a hairdryer or such, you'll need a power extension. It is only one outlet, too, just like the US power.

Hi Gooch(LINDA). Thanks for posting while on your cruise. You have had a few problems from what I have read but you seem to be GOING WITH THE FLOW. Good on you. Is the SUN PRINCESS as nice as the photos I have seen? Enjoy the rest of your time on board and looking forward to a big review when you settle back into your routine. Suexxx
