paul929207 Posted December 6, 2007 #2 Share Posted December 6, 2007 On our last crusie we had met a number of fellow cruisers before we even left home, thanks to Cruise Critic. It turned out we were on the same flight to Venice as another couple, so we shared a water taxi to the hotel. We wound up with 16 going to dinner the night before the crusie. Rare Essiesmom Posted December 6, 2007 #4 Share Posted December 6, 2007 I am rather distinctive when I travel, because I have a small doll (Essie) who travels openly with me. (When my sister travels with me, Essie's cousin Lizzie comes along). So the wait staff get to know me, my table mates, other passengers who stop and want to know the story about the doll. (You would be amazed how many people travel with a teddy bear that never leaves their cabin...). But the people who really get to know me are the ship's photographers, who get us every time we leave the ship, when we board, in the dining room...And the people clocking us in and out in the ports...They want to know where her Sign and Sail card is...She wants to know, too...but I haven't been able to persuade anyone to give her one yet...EM

chasetf Posted December 6, 2007 #6 Share Posted December 6, 2007 Who do you get to know on the ship? Other cruisers, bartender, etc...:) I would have thought the waiter / asst waiter..... given I would think you spend more time with them. So it surprised me to see the bartender ahead of the waiters.

cruise_lover Posted December 6, 2007 #9 Share Posted December 6, 2007 I get to know our cabin stewards more than anyone else. I like talking to them in the morning, finding out how their evening before went, asking them if they will be able to leave the ship when we are in port. Talking about where we (all of us) are from and our family members. By the time we leave the ship we both are seeking each other out and promising each other that if we sail on the same ship again we'll look each other up. f7prez Posted December 6, 2007 #10 Share Posted December 6, 2007 I learned quickly that the cabin steward can make your stay more comfortable. Whether you need extra towels, blankets, pillows or even an extra chair for the balcony, the stewards are always helpful.
Spikesgirl Posted December 6, 2007 #11 Share Posted December 6, 2007 We are friendly with all the folks you mentioned, but since we do assigned seating, I had to go with other cruises. The reality is that I still write you a fellow cruiser that we met four years ago and exchange cards with many others. Can't say that about crew. As a matter of fact, I have an ACD calling me on Saturday, when he gets into port, about our cruise in January!! :)

momofmeg Posted December 6, 2007 #16 Share Posted December 6, 2007 I guess tablemates but you know, usually acrusie is either alone time for hubby and I, or family time with our daughter, or vacation times with our friends; so we do not really want to get to know anyone no more then to be pleasant/polite to them. Super Sassy is my office mascot (I shaded his face because it's a photo of a real person, a coworker, who is just thrilled that Super Sassy gets to see the world :D ). He particularly enjoyed the rock climbing wall on AOS As to why a flat rubber doll travels with us... well, why not? :D He's well behaved, very quiet, doesn't spend money, takes up almost no room (though he has quite a wardrobe), even wears a tux on formal evenings. Perfect travel companion! LOL

Rare Essiesmom Posted December 8, 2007 #23 Share Posted December 8, 2007 Don't say you didn't ask...First of all, I sort of stumbled into doll collecting in 2001, with Lee Middleton vinyl dolls. these are life size baby dolls and toddlers, not the frou-frou porcelain people think of when you say you collect dolls. I became a member of their collectors club, and on the member forum, every time you said you were going on a trip, someone would ask if you were going to take a baby along. Well, a life size newborn would take up too much space in luggage...but they also made play dolls, and the smallest was 12", called a Newborn Wonder. It cost about $25. But in 2003, they put out a cheaper version for TJMaxx that was bald. it cost $8. I thought, when I was packing for a group tour to Iceland in October...I can take one of those along. So I packed one, and a couple changes of clothes for her. When we got to the hotel in Reykjavik, I took her out of the bag, and decided to do a little picture story of her trip, so she had to get a name. Something very simple and down to earth, so she became Essie. She stayed hidden in my room for a couple of days, until the morning I went to breakfast wnd a woman older than me (retired) had a jar of extra chunky peanut butter on the table...never traveled without one. I thought, 'If this lady can do this, Essie can come out of the room'. Out she came, made friends, had her own seat on the bus, etc. She had no personality at all, but it developed as we went along. Here she is sitting on a small iceberg, complaining of cold feet: The last night of the trip, we had our farewell dinner at a place that staged Viking Feasts. the only beverages served were mugs of beer, and a small shot of some sort of clear firewater. When I caught Essie slumped over an empty mug of beer, her fate was sealed. Ever since, she has explored every bar we pass. She prefers beer, imported over domestic, but will try anything that is free. She thought Margaritaville on Grand Turk was wonderful: Attending the past guest party on Elation: On Zenith, she found the very best place to cool off: She visited to cruise planner to discuss anothercruise: She has been on five cruises plus Iceland, and has two cruises booked in 2008. LambKnuckles Posted December 8, 2007 #24 Share Posted December 8, 2007 Essiesmom I LOVE IT and you're a wonderful "mom" for including her in all your tours and travels. I always take Critter with me, but like you did before, I left him in the cabin. He has many photos along side the fun towel animals that the steward gives him to play with -- but I've never taken him to port or around the ship. The cabin steward has fun incorporating him into a "scene" each night. I WILL NOW!! Thanks for the courage, and thank the peanut butter lady, too! Rare Essiesmom Posted December 8, 2007 #25 Share Posted December 8, 2007 LK, essie has become sort of a cult figure among my collector friends, and she has cousins all over the country. One whose mom lives in WI went on a cruise last Jan on the Oosterdam, and sent her ankle bracelets from the inch of gold sales ( two inches each...). That little friend has a cruise coming up this Jan. on Zuiderdam. Essie goes to the dining room every night, to all the parties, she has been swimming in the pool and hot tub, and tried her hand at a sand sculpture on the beach at Half Moon Cay. she also sat in a seat at Epidaurus, waiting for a show to start, and on top of the wall at Santorini, admiring the view. She likes the casino, too. She has her own life jacket to wear to the lifeboat drill. EM
