DarthGrady Posted December 8, 2007 #1 Share Posted December 8, 2007 We are going to book an Alaska Cruise on the Spirit, and we have been told that the balcony rooms at the very back of the ship are the best. Any thoughts?
Wennfred Posted December 8, 2007 #2 Share Posted December 8, 2007 We are going to book an Alaska Cruise on the Spirit, and we have been told that the balcony rooms at the very back of the ship are the best. Any thoughts? Yes, those Wrap Around cabins located in the back corners are awesome, those are Cat.11a, but if those are gone, Cabin 7301 would be my next pick which is a Cat.9a cabin. DarthGrady Posted December 8, 2007 Author #3 Share Posted December 8, 2007 yeah, the suite probably won't be within our budget....unfortunately:(
vacruizer Posted December 8, 2007 #4 Share Posted December 8, 2007 If you want to go with a side balcony, we liked all they way forward on deck 8 by the bridge. Very quiet there, but a long walk if you are bothered by that. We were glad to get the exercise and would book that location again next time. DarthGrady Posted December 8, 2007 Author #5 Share Posted December 8, 2007 would there be a lot of noise from the elevators in 7301?
Wennfred Posted December 8, 2007 #6 Share Posted December 8, 2007 would there be a lot of noise from the elevators in 7301? Nope, the elevators are located in their own room and the cabin doors shut tight, you even have open that cabin door to hear the annoucements. firefly333 Posted December 8, 2007 #7 Share Posted December 8, 2007 Id be happy with one of those 5A obstructed french windows that open, but you cant walk out, just get fresh air on the spirit...some day, if it ever goes out of a nearby port. Ltvscout Posted December 8, 2007 #8 Share Posted December 8, 2007 We are going to book an Alaska Cruise on the Spirit, and we have been told that the balcony rooms at the very back of the ship are the best. Any thoughts? We're partial to Cat 11 suites, but if I was to get a regular balcony I'd go with a Category 8G. That's an extended balcony cabin on deck 7, the Verandah deck. That deck has cabins above it and below it so you're better proctected from noise. I'd personally never take a deck 8 (Panorama deck) cabin which is right below the Lido deck or a deck 4 (Main deck) cabin which is right above the dining rooms, bars, casinos, nightclubs, etc. I'm a stickler for noise, as in I don't want any! ;) I also hate vibration. A number of people like those aft balconies. I don't care for them due to the engine vibration you get back there. Plus, you'll get soot on the balcony from the stacks. Everyone is different though in what they'll put up with.
Sandi149 Posted December 8, 2007 #9 Share Posted December 8, 2007 If you go with a regular balcony room, near the elevators are great. We had a cabin on Deck 6 Legend foreward right by the elevators and on the Miracle Deck 5 midship by the Atrium elevators. Heard no noise at all from either cabin and being by the elevators is so convenient.
dk1 Posted December 8, 2007 #10 Share Posted December 8, 2007 5131 and forward on both sides of the Legend (Spirit class) are truly extended balconies. As you look at her, it is on the "upper" deck where the forward angle of the ship starts. The balconies are deeper, side by side cabins can have ther balcony dividers opened. 5131 has no neighbors to the aft. It is near Camp Carnival, but I did not hear a sound from the kidlets on my November cruise. DK
Rare silentbob007 Posted December 8, 2007 #11 Share Posted December 8, 2007 I think that obstructed 7A balconies can be a good deal if you don't mind some lifeboats in front of your balcony. I booked a 7A GTY and was upgraded to an obstructed 9A that they obviously couldn't sell for the full 9A price.
Glama Posted December 8, 2007 #12 Share Posted December 8, 2007 I absolutely agree, aft balconies are the best. We had the aft wraparound, and while we loved the balcony, we didn't love the suite. Too "cut up". Next time, I'd choose a regular balcony aft cabin. :)
MrPete Posted December 8, 2007 #13 Share Posted December 8, 2007 Aft is nice, but too damn loud! The wraps are nice for the balcony, but too chopped up for cabin spaciousness. But I'm fine with anything balcony or better.
Loon-A-Sea Posted December 8, 2007 #14 Share Posted December 8, 2007 we were on the Legend main deck aft balcony stateroom (not a suite) for 8 days and really liked it. one day, we did have the black soot from the smokestackes (depends on the wind) on the balcony, but they came and cleaned it up right away. i am a light sleeper and the noise did not bother me. i would stay there again. just my 2 cents:)

Any thoughts? This is just my opinion...Cabins that face aft are the best for Alaska because they shelter you from the winds..If its in your budget try for a corner wrap..ALSO try for one on the main deck..The overhang is extended and will help protect you from the rain and drizzle..Our first cruise to Alaska we had cabin 6260 on the empress deck..It was an awesome cabin but it could get very wet out on the balcony..SOO this year we have cabin 4237 choosing it because of the overhang.. Another thing when cruiseing Alaska...Sailing south and Glacier Bay Port side cabins are better for scenic viewing and visa versa if you sail north.. Which brings me back to Aft Facing Cabins..You get a very nice panoramic view of the scenery without having to wait for the ship to TURN around.. Frequent Floater Posted December 8, 2007 #16 Share Posted December 8, 2007 Aft is a must in Alaska. Like Kelly said it blocks the wind and the views are fantastic. We had several together on deck 4 for our Alaska sailing in Aug. We were only bothered by vibration when porting so not a big deal for us.. big_duck Posted December 8, 2007 #17 Share Posted December 8, 2007 would there be a lot of noise from the elevators in 7301? If you don't want to spring for a Cat 9, 7258 has a huge balcony and is the same price as the other Cat 8's.

DarthGrady Posted December 8, 2007 Author #20 Share Posted December 8, 2007 Well, this has all been very good information. Our TA has reserved one of the aft balcony cabins on the Upper deck for us, so we will probably go with that one. Its not too close to the lido, not too close to the dining room. I like having a deck between us and any noisy areas.

We found the very little vibration we felt soothing..Only once did it vibrate enough to rattle the glasses on the bar and that was when we were comming into port..:)..For Alaska I think the protection from the wind aft cabins offer is well worth a little damp and vibration.. For an Alaska cruise if I was to book an aft balcony, I'd probably look to get one on at least the Empress deck if not higher to minimize the vibration. You're not laying out sunbathing on an Alaska cruise so there's no need to worry about the privacy you'd get with the overhang on the aft balcony on deck 4.
