big teenager issue

Honestly if your child went through a phase like one of mine did where he wanted to be on the computer 24/7 to chat and play games, I would say NO. Mine wanted to be in the internet cafe all day in Mexico. We put a stop to it and made him have fun. Theres alot to do on the ship and you would hate for him to sit in the cabin all day long on the computer.

I think it may depend on what he plans to use the laptop for.

Remember that internet charges on board are pretty expensive. And you may want to establish in advance who's going to pay for it, you or him.

Internet Café Price List :

To utilize the internet service, the below options are available. Please note that the internet pricing options are identical, whether an Internet Café terminal is utilized, or a laptop. All internet access charges will be billed directly to the guest's onboard “Sail & Sign” Account:

An initial one-time Activation Fee of $3.95 applies to each user.

A basic time charge of $0.75 per minute (“Pay-As-You-Go”) is available. Minutes are rounded to the next full minute.

Discounted “Time Plans” offer guests the opportunity to enjoy a lower per-minute rate. These Time Plans do not have to be used in a single session and can be used anytime throughout the cruise until debarkation; No refund for unused minutes; Upgrading selected pricing option is not available. Plans are subject to change.

Cruises 6 days in length and longer:

100 minutes for $55.00 ($0.55 per minute)

250 minutes for $100.00 ($0.40 per minute)

Cruises less than 6 days in length:

30 minutes for $16.50 ($0.55 per minute)

60 minutes for $24.00 ($0.40 per minute)

Pricing is way too expensive for him to be online all day. But, if he uses it to take notes, or jot down observations, like I did... or write notes to his friends and then quickly log on, send/receive them, and then log off, he'll be within a reasonable amount of expense.

I left my laptop unlocked, sitting out in my cabin in full view, the whole two weeks (did a B2B :D ) with no problems.

But I agree -- decide in advance how much time he will get for the week, and who will pay for it.

My opinion only.

Who's the adult? and who's paying for the cruise?

My teen didn't like my cruise plans either. I gave him a choice and it was completely up to him.

Choice 1) Go on the cruise and play by my rules.

Choice 2) Stay home with grandparents.

He chose choice 1 and had a wonderful time. Had he chosen choice 2, I'm stubborn enough to have said OK and eaten the lost monies.

Boy do I like the way you play the parent game. (my style too, although I never had a teen problem as they had me figured out long before they got to that age.)

On the question of is it safe. I always take mine and leave it sitting on the desk and never had a problem.

I would say it was as safe as at my house.

My dd (16) is literally glued to her laptop - this includes school work and social life. I think she really enjoys NOT having it with her on vacations - she then doesn't know who is going where without her, what parties she is missing etc. I also found out she can string together more than 3 words at a time!! - LOL. (I don't care, leave me alone , actually disappear on the cruise) Between the computer and cell phone being "gone", we actually enjoy her company. But then, back to NY and reality...

My sentiments exactly. I leave my laptop at home when we vacation (with the exception of my last vacation where I had to have it to finish a project for a customer $$$$$). Heck, when I'm vacationing I don't even want mine around.

how long is your trip to the boat and back? A laptop could be a trip saver to watch movies in the airport, on the plane, or in the car if you're driving. I would set the expectation that you won't be paying for a lot of online access, but there are uses for a machine. If you take a lot of picutres, sometimes its fun to work on them onboard. I cruised as a teen long before the days of everyone carrying around a laptop and probably wouldn't have used it for 2 minutes once I met other kids. Although I was 16 and was more worried about sneaking into the casino to play slot machines...

I wouldn't worry about the saftey of the device, if you are, you can purchase a laptop lock (it comes with a long steel cable and locks to the frame of the machine and you wrap the cable around anything fixed to the ground) for probably under $30. I don't think anyone will bother a laptop anyway, and it would be easy to hide in a drawer or closet.

OK we leave for our cruise in 3 days and the big argument is- Can he take his laptop!!

Is it safe to leave in our room?

Whether you (as the parent) decide to allow him to bring it or not is up to you.

The facts are that the cost of usage onboard the ship is high, but unless he leaves it out on the nightstand with a sign that says "steal me"...it will probably be safe in the cabin.

If he does bring it, simply let him know that he has to pay the cost of usage (UP FRONT) and that it is his responsibility to make sure it is placed in the closet when not in use to prevent it from being picked up by a passing cruiser while the cabin door is open for cleaning.

If your question is about the safety of the laptop (theft) and not about whether or not the kid should have it on the trip, I'll second what jiggs said. You can buy a cable lock for $20 and you won't have to worry about it. Every laptop has a lock slot and you just lock it to something either permanent or too big to move.

If you're asking about whether you should let the kid take it, well, there's plenty of advice above on that.

Have a great trip!

Same here...along with my Blackberrry! I take a vacation to get away from that stuff!

To some, it is not always about the money. You shouldn't speak for others as to what they should spend on their children. College, car, more support, vacation with family, and a few extra bucks to spend on the trip...priceless

I always take my laptop with me. And I have never used the internet on the ship.

Mine has a beautiful screen saver I enjoy seeing. It provides light if I am in an inside room. I play my music on it. And I use it to put my pictures on and in any down time (waiting for others to get ready) I use it to organize the pictures so I can upload them to my picture web space when I get home and/or send them to be printed.

We will be bringing our laptops with us in January to dump the contents of our video cards into daily. I am no worried about theft, we intend to store ours under the bed in our luggage. Out of sight, out of mind!

And I am out of my mind, too. Getting 17 people organized for this cruise is taking it's toll...

Your possesions are very safe in your stateroom. My wife has left out very large valuable gems and never had an issue. However, as a family we opt not to take computers onboard as they detract from the overall experience. Sometimes making the hard decision is the most imortant part of being a parent. Good Luck!

Well my mum has agreed to let me take mine, so I can play the SIMS :D and study Law (and my other subs), as my exams will be really soon after the cruise. :(

We have talked about the 'no internet as we can't possibly afford it' thing though... can't imagine seven days without the net... I shudder

Question:

Do the Verizon wireless internet cards work on ships or do they block them? If so can you rent a wireless card and how much is a ships wireless card? Do they charge for time on top of the rental? I doubt I will even bring my laptop but just wondering.

We don't usually take our laptop. At each port, we find an internet cafe as the teens like to catch up with their friends. For $2.00 each, they get 20 minutes of computer time and that seems to satisfy them. It works out well, as I usually like to take 20 minutes myself to email family at home to let them know that all is well and read the emails that they send me to keep up to date.

Hope this is helpful.
