purplenorway Posted December 28, 2007 #1 Share Posted December 28, 2007 We just got the mariner tile with the Dutch mother and daughter and I am curious as to what it says. Can anyone translate?
kakalina Posted December 28, 2007 #2 Share Posted December 28, 2007 The bottom line is "Where is that ship going to? North America my child." the top is " Holland America Steamship Company". I don't know the bit on the left. I know Copper can do a much better job.
Rare LAFFNVEGAS Posted December 28, 2007 #3 Share Posted December 28, 2007 Copper, will most likely not be on line till tomorrow he has gone to San Diego and has plans for this evening but I have bets he brought his lap top with him and will be checking in tomorrow.;) Becky we also got the same tile on the Oosterdam last week. So that makes 3 of the 4 tiles for this year that we were able to obtain.:)

Krazy Kruizers Posted December 28, 2007 #11 Share Posted December 28, 2007 We got that tile on our recent Ryndam cruise - really like that one. It looks more like a HAL tile.
jhannah Posted December 28, 2007 #12 Share Posted December 28, 2007 I agree, KK. The other new ones they introduced look too contemporary. They don't fit in with the other ones we've gotten for years, IMO. (The HAL ship is okay, though.)
Jade13 Posted December 28, 2007 #13 Share Posted December 28, 2007 Great job!:) Top: Netherlands-American Steamship Company - Rotterdam Left: Tickets (billetes has a French origin) are handed out to all places/cities/destinations of the United States Bottom/Little girl: Where is that ship going to? Mother: To America, my child ("naar" is "to" - "noord" is "north") It's a nice tegel/tile, isn't it?:) Thanks. We received two of these on the Westerdam this year. I love the design so could not understand why folks were saying they were not that nice. I hope we get a different one on the Noordam. I am also hoping that the Eurodam three day out of NY has the one with the Statute of Liberty. They are calling the 3 day an inaugual sailing. (I guess North American Inaugual). Krazy Kruizers Posted December 28, 2007 #14 Share Posted December 28, 2007 Jim - I agree about the Statendam tile - hope to get a couple of them some day. We have 8 of the Statue of Liberty - they just don't fit in with all the older tiles.
mrscopper Posted December 30, 2007 #15 Share Posted December 30, 2007 We just returned from our 7th HAL cruise on the Maasdam. We did not get any tiles this time. They use to leave them in our suite. What happenedl. Any ideas re getting ours?
kakalina Posted December 30, 2007 #16 Share Posted December 30, 2007 Rumor has it that now one must attend the "mariners brunch" to receive your tiles. I don't know if this is true. In Oct. we got them in our cabin. I leave next week and will find out for myself.
sandyblue029 Posted December 30, 2007 #17 Share Posted December 30, 2007 Ours was left in our cabin on our cruise the 8th of December on the Oosterdam. It says Holland America Line across the bottom and a picture (drawing) of the Statendam.

In Oct. we got them in our cabin. I leave next week and will find out for myself. On the Zuiderdam Dec 15-22 we got them at the Mariner's Brunch. Once again it appears that HAL is inconsistent from ship to ship! I am also hoping that the Eurodam three day out of NY has the one with the Statute of Liberty. Do you know (or does anyone know) if they will using the same set of four for 2008?
Rare boards Posted December 30, 2007 #19 Share Posted December 30, 2007 On our cruise on the Amsterdam in May we did not get our delivered, nor did we get our 50th day pins. We had to go ask for them. It took the excitement or thrill of receiving them away. We did receive them and they were finally delivered before the mariners get together. There were alot of medallions given out on the cruise. That was really nice to see. Only 48 days more before we get one.
HokiePoq Posted December 30, 2007 #20 Share Posted December 30, 2007 Please excuse a silly new Mariner question... What do you do with the tiles? Coasters? Frame them? Ours were delivered to the room although we did attend the event. Only the medallions were presented there. (Veendam in December)
purplenorway Posted December 30, 2007 Author #21 Share Posted December 30, 2007 Our tiles were delivered to our cabin. Hope they have a new set for 2008. I like variety. I stick the tiles to my wall with sticky squares. Four squares of the kind used for posters work well.
jhannah Posted December 30, 2007 #22 Share Posted December 30, 2007 Some use them as coasters, display pieces, or a backsplash behind their sink.

Rare Copper10-8 Posted January 6, 2008 #24 Share Posted January 6, 2008 Nice translation Copper !Het is inderdaad een mooi tegeltje :) Hi there Mr. de Hollander, hoe gaat het er mee?/How are you doing? I was kinda struggling with the word "billetten". I took that as "old Dutch" for (fare) tickets, don't think it's used anymore nowadays "kaartjes" having taken its place
bepsf Posted January 6, 2008 #25 Share Posted January 6, 2008 I agree, KK. The other new ones they introduced look too contemporary. You do realize that the new tiles are all based on historical HAL advertising images, don't you?
