RuthC Posted January 11, 2008 #2 Share Posted January 11, 2008 If you want complementary room service, you've come to the right place. :D There's a 24-hour room service menu, an additional menu during more limited hours, a full hot breakfast. Besides that you can order from the dining room menu if you want dinner in your cabin. A tip to the steward is always appreciated.
vtjaime Posted January 11, 2008 Author #3 Share Posted January 11, 2008 Oh that is just fantastic! OK, one more rookie question... should I tip the steward cash, or at the end along with everyone else?
sail7seas Posted January 11, 2008 #4 Share Posted January 11, 2008 I read something here this week and was the first time I've heard of this but (apparently) we can order from the Dining Room Menu for Room Service at Lunch as well as dinner. Haven't tried it but I can imagine there could be a time when that might be nice! We always have some singles and some fives in an envelope ready to tip when the steward brings our Room Service. How much we tip depends upon how much we have ordered but we tip each time he brings us an order. We usually have the same Room Service Steward for the whole cruise. Hope you have a great criuse.......and enjoy your Room Service. :)
RuthC Posted January 11, 2008 #5 Share Posted January 11, 2008 ...should I tip the steward cash, or at the end along with everyone else? If you decide to tip the room service steward it should be done in cash at the time of service. You might get a different steward each time. sail7seas Posted January 11, 2008 #7 Share Posted January 11, 2008 I'm not good at finding things when I do a search but if you want to try your luck doing a search on this forum, I know that the full room service menu has been posted here. If I had better luck when I did searches, I'd do it for you but I hardly ever find what I'm looking for. :(

O2B@C Posted January 11, 2008 #9 Share Posted January 11, 2008 Another fine point - you can get breakfast items that are not listed on the preprinted door hanger order card, but only after a certain time (apparently the time the dining room opens for breakfast). Enjoy! The free room service is definitely one of HAL's great benefits!
Sprocket Posted January 11, 2008 #10 Share Posted January 11, 2008 Have yet to try it myself but one of the hands down favorite items mentioned by others is the Club Sandwich..... I intend to try it in April. You can also order Eggs Benedict for breakfast if you wish, just write it down on the room service order form. And if you want salt, pepper, butter etc I think you have to include those as well. I usually order coffee and OJ to be delivered on port days, its nice to have it while we get ready to leave the ship.
Harry1954 Posted January 12, 2008 #11 Share Posted January 12, 2008 We always have breakfast on the verandah each morning .. usually same room steward delivers and sets up outside for us ... we tip each time. Have not tried lunch or dinner yet because we have always enjoyed the variety available elsewhere .. harry
O2B@C Posted January 12, 2008 #12 Share Posted January 12, 2008 Oh - and one other thing since no one has mentioned it yet - if you want room service dinner from the evening's dining room menu (as opposed to the room service menu), you can have it delivered anytime during dining room dinner hours, but you have to place the order within the first half hour after the dining room opens. The menu is posted outside the dining room and available at the bars - not sure at what time - and if you are in a suite, your cabin steward will deliver it in the morning. Dinner on your veranda in a warm climate is delightful! (Ditto breakfast, lunch, or anything in between!)
mamaofami Posted January 12, 2008 #13 Share Posted January 12, 2008 You can also write in chocolate croissants for breakfast. Can't wait. We always have room service for breakfast. I've never tried room service for lunch, but it sounds nice.
Northshorecruisers Posted January 12, 2008 #14 Share Posted January 12, 2008 We love ordering coffee from room service in the morning and enjoying it on our verandah. Our first cruise, the verandah wasn't set up the best to enjoy a full meal, but this time we're in a superior suite. I'm hoping to not only do breakfast out there but some lunches as well. HAL's room service menu is very good, with lots of options. And, as mentioned earlier you can even write in any choices you would like. Enjoy the Oosterdam, she is a beautiful ship. twinkletoes4445 Posted January 12, 2008 #18 Share Posted January 12, 2008 Does anyone know if they still provide the menus in advance for the suites? We received them on our cruise in 2007, but I thought possibly I'd read HAL is no longer doing this.
twinkletoes4445 Posted January 12, 2008 #19 Share Posted January 12, 2008 You can also write in chocolate croissants for breakfast. Can't wait. We always have room service for breakfast. I've never tried room service for lunch, but it sounds nice. Thanks for the info on the chocolate croissants! I'll have to try that next time. And we may even try having lunch delivered to our cabin. Micmac Posted January 12, 2008 #20 Share Posted January 12, 2008 Does anyone know if they still provide the menus in advance for the suites? We received them on our cruise in 2007, but I thought possibly I'd read HAL is no longer doing this. On the Volendam last month, no menus were delivered to the suite. However, they were available for perusal in the Neptune Lounge.
Liv4cruzin Posted January 12, 2008 #21 Share Posted January 12, 2008 When I was first researching cruise lines, I read somewhere that one of them will do room service at no additional charge, and I *think* it was HAL. Now that I'm booked on the Oosterdam, I'm curious! I feel a little strange pointing this out, especially since no one else picked up on this. The OP's question was asked as if HAL was the only one (or one of the few cruise lines) that offered room service at no charge. I can't recall cruising on a ship that didn't offer complimentary room service. Granted some have a very limited menu; & some don't let you order from the D.R. menu. I don't want the OP to think that HAL is the exception, rather than the rule.

sail7seas Posted January 12, 2008 #23 Share Posted January 12, 2008 I remember reading that and still can't figure it out. I can't imagine why just that ship at that time no menus were delivered??? We have always had them delivered on every HAL ship we have ever sailed. twinkletoes4445 Posted January 12, 2008 #24 Share Posted January 12, 2008 Hmmm...well, if we don't get them delivered to our cabin, we'll ask if they will do this for us. :)

I don't want the OP to think that HAL is the exception, rather than the rule. I've sailed Carnival (it was cheap and we were paying for 6) Celebrity and Hal. I've ordered room service on all of them. Carnival's was terrible. Limited menu very long wait (one to two hours) Celebrity was okay although their portion size was very skimpy so you had to double it and very limited menu HAL was the best and although sometimes it has not been great (poor quality of food) generally we were pretty satisfied--usually ordered breakfast and snacks before a late dinner :D
