Are there adults only pools and hot tubs

Are there adult only pools and hot tubs on HAL? Do they enforce the no saving chairs by the pool rule? I don't like kids aned find chair hogs to be the rudest of all cruiser, but I really want to cruise HAL. Thank-you for your replies.
Some ships (Veendam is one) request that the aft (outdoor) pool be kept adults-only, but it is not enforced. Chair hogging rules are not enforced either.

What is chair-hogging? Do people put their stuff on more than one chair while they're swimming? Or is it a matter of putting your stuff out at 5:00 AM to make sure you have a chair and then coming back in the evening when you're ready to use it?
The latter. "Reserving" a lounger all day when they're often not there.

some folks (i.e. referred to as jerks down South) will put their book, etc on chair and leave it for hours ... rather than when they are going to lunch or done for the morning, pick up their dirty towel(s) and deposit in bin and leave chair for others ...

They are on every ship, every cruise line we have been on, and they are the same folks who leave their beach towels at Half Moon, expecting someone else to pick it up and return it to the ship for them.

As previously mentioned, the aft pool is the Adults Only pool on the ships. I did not see this being enforced on Westerdam in December...and in fact there was one couple with a baby that continually came to the aft pool and brought their baby into the pool, even though it is clearly marked for Adults Only and the signs clearly state "No Diapered Children."

As I know, there are those that always feel that the rules do not apply to them...but hopefully the nasty looks will eventually get through to them.

  • 2 months later...

So, the aft pool on the Westerdam is adults only? Can I assume that will be the case for the Eurodam as well? How many pools are on the Westerdam along with the new Eurodam? I could only see two, the Lido and the Seaview. Maybe this is why the "adults only" is not enforced.

As for chair hogs, they are everywhere! You could be at sea or staying at a five star hotel. Some hotels will keep an eye on the stuff deposited on chairs. They will remove the stuff also. I saw that happen at the Grand Wailea in March. Maybe cruise ships should do that also.

It's unlikely that any cruise line employee is going to touch passengers' stuff, left on a chair, for too long.

What's more likely, is that passengers will once again have the opportunity to rent a lounge chair, as used to be the norm on cruise lines. There is nothing new about the concept of paying for what you use, aka "nickle and diming". :)

More effective than the nasty looks ... requesting a staff member to speak with the parents of the diapered baby might have solved that problem and protected other passengers from health issues or pool closings due to poop leakage.

Speaking to a staff person about keeping a diapered baby out of an adult pool may work, but it did not work with respect to kids using the adult only pool on Oosterdam. They were about 6 kids jumping in and screaming. Effectively kept all the adults out of the pool. Parents were right at poolside - did nothing. Spoke to staff. Did nothing.

You're absolutely right. The scenarios mentioned above are part of the reason we prefer the R and S class ships, in December, for 10- or 14-day trips. Not as many family groups with young children onboard as on the Vistas, or so it seems to me.

Was on the Zuiderdam in December. No adults only pools or hot tubs and plenty of chair hogs. We had no problem getting chairs, but I personally don't mind removing someone's things from a seat, and turning them in as lost, if the owners have not shown up for hours. It's ridiculous!

:D I have never had any problem with "chair Hogs" on HAL. There have always been plenty of chairs for everyone. The Seaview Pool has always been for adults and it has been good. This could be that we never cruise in school holiday time!!!!! On RCCL chair saving was a nightmare and the only place we found for adults only in pols was the "solarium" which was enforced. My beef is with people who save whole rows of seats in the theatre!!!!! I need to be close as I am severely vision impaired and often I do not go to the shows as nobody will give me a seat near enough to the stage. I have, on occasion, gone to the event before the show - games or such - and stayed there until it was over and then moved to a front seat before the show but that is an awful waste of time. Hopefully on our next cruise - 20 day Caribbean in February the childen population will be almost nil as we are sailing after the American President's Day week.;) Don't get me wrong, I love children but not having to deal with kids who are not looked after properly by their parents and wh are out of control.

I don't understand how ANYONE takes children (at least, children over 5) on a 20-day cruise during the school year. Are these all homeschooled children? Or are there parts of the world where February is not a school month? I mean, I've heard of taking kids out of school for vacation, but for 20 days?

Some kid may be in year round schedule. 3 Months school and 1 month off. When my DS was Elementary school, his off day was March, July and November. I love that kind of schedule.:)

I'm a parent so I'm not "kid bashing". Cruise ships have plenty of family and even kids-only areas. It's not unreasonable to ask parents to respect adult only areas.

I think I would politely bring the adults only issue to the parent's attention. If that didn't work, I'd ask a few cooperating adults to help make the pool truly adults-only.....some overt PDA's, telling off color jokes, removing a bikini top underwater, etc.

:) That is precicely why we cruise during the time school is in. There are sometimes very small ones but they are always with their parents and no problem. The only time I saw school aged kids on a long school time cruise was a family from Ontario who had three boys who were home schooled. This was FLL to Vancouver 23 days. The boys were great and spent part of every day in the library doing school work and also doing projects on each port we visited. It was wonderful to see this family and how they combined vacation with education. ;)

I took my son out of Intermediate School for 4 days when we went to Japan. When I contacted his teachers way in advance, the range of responses and attitudes was interesting. Everything from implying I was negligent to even consider taking him out of school, to "have a fun time", to "How awesome, he will learn way more on the trip than he ever will sitting in my classroom". One teacher had him journal for extra credit and he was able to read Grapes of Wrath on the plane and get a jump on the next reading project. IMO travel can be one of the best educations to give a kid (but I'm preaching to the choir). :)

We were on the Ryndam last month and the Navigation pool was supposed to be adult only but it sure wasn't enforced. In fact they even made an announcement in the daily log and still it had no effect. There were always kids in the pool everyday and these kids were old enough to read the sign at the pool edge that said "adults only".........Some parents and their kids seem to think that rules do not apply to them apparently.

Another hot topic! Cool beans!;)

We were on Maasdam last week. The aft/seaview pool was declared "Adults Only" and this was mentioned one day in the Daily Program (as was the request to please not reserve chairs on deck and in the show lounge "out of respect for your fellow guests".) Believe me, there were plenty of chairs with books, hats, robes:eek: and other assorted items on them indicating that the specific chair was "reserved". The time they were "reserved" varried. There were no signs in place at the seaview pool stating that it was requested to be "Adults only". There were plenty of kids in the hot tubs with or without mum and dad. None of these "requests" were enforced but then again, who would you like to do the enforcing? Bar staff? The sound and lighting guys or the stage manager in the show lounge? Those are the only staff "permanenty assigned" to those specific locations.

HAL does not have lifeguards (pool managers or the deck chair police) assigned to the two pools or the decks surrounding them and the signs around those pools state so. Plus they are not going to assign one or more security guards to aft pool, area's where they have deck chairs and/or show lounge. Those guys have much better things to do. So it comes down to the adult pax (can't blame the kids) adhering to the request not to do it. As with anything else, some will comply and some will not!

We just came back from a Westerdam cruise and I had specifically asked if there were areas on the ship where children could not go. My travel agent checked with her HAL rep and was told only the casino. When we were on the ship there was a sign by the Aft pool stating "adults only". I asked my TA when we got back, she double checked with the HAL rep and apparently the sign can be put out at the discretion of the captain/staff. We had over 300 kids on board, which I'm sure is what inspired the sign being put out on this trip!
