I have rebooked two of my three cruises on Cunard. If the rest of the lines follow suit, I will stop cruising. I may have to put up with it where I live and work, but I don't where I will be spending thousands of dollars on a vacation by choice. There are lots of other options out there..

I am happy for the non smokers who will now be able to cruise smoke free. I don't have to.

Thank you for that.

After suffering and choking on our balcony due to our neighbor's smoke on Constellation and Century this is very welcome news!

Steph? are you maybe exaggerating just a little bit? Choking?? If the ship's moving you might smell the smoke, but it's doubtful that even someone specifically allergic to cigarette smoke would have anything more than a psychosomatic reaction from the small percentage of secondhand smoke they would inhale as it floats past at 15-18 knots.

I don't smoke, don't like to smell it, but I think some non-smokers go totally overboard with their complaints.

Come on. Unbelievable premise and insulting. You can do better.

I agree... I ONLY sail balconies... and I do not smoke... and I have NEVER been inundated with "desperate smokers" around me. Give me a break.

And I love the one that keeps saying "thank you for that".

Having just booked a Celebrity cruise for next year, I am very disappointed and upset. I wouldn't have booked it if I had known. I guess my cruising days are over.

Patti, if it's a deal-breaker for you, you can cancel without penalty. Also, at least for now, most lines still have far fewer smoking restrictions than the ones that Celebrity will enact. Check out Princess. Check out Carnival. Check out HAL. You don't have to give up cruising. At least not yet.

Good luck!

We didn't like the lady on the next door balcony that fed the sea gulls and constantly shouted out JONATHON!jonathon Livingston Seagull Come eat!!Could we please get her banned. We would love not to have the balcony next to her again. When the life boat drill was called she again LOUDLY told her husband to hide the booze this is when they confiscate it.She was unbelievably lousy to be next to us.She said everything LOUDLY!I'm sorry for the people that booked balconies next to smokers .I personally think Celebrity is making a bad decision to ban smoking on all the balconies. We have had babies next door that cried loudly all the time. They were obviously colicky and could have ruined our trip.we didn't let them.Smokers have never ruined our trip but rude people have been on all of our trips.I just wish we had gotten one of the smokers surveys.Just my opinion.I wish we had been asked. We won't cancel our cruises. But again just wish we had been asked.Just scheduled our 8th Celebrity cruiser yesterday.Puts us into the elite class but they don't seem to care.I'd rather have smokers next door than some of the people we've had.We are disappointed with this decision and we try to love everybody!

... but rude people have been on all of our trips..

OK, you asked for it.

Celebrity Rudeness Policy

"Effectively immediately, rudeness will only be permitted on the starboard side of each lounge on the ship. At no time will be rudeness be tolerated in cabins, balconies, dining areas, theatres and other public areas. Anyone caught violating these rules will be subject to having his/her mouth washed out with soap. Note that rudeness specifically includes cutting into line at the buffet area. Rudeness guidelines apply to all age groups. Seniors are not exempt."

My pollen allergies have been Horrible today! My eyes are weepy and my head is full.I hope the state of California will recognize this and cut down all the trees and flowers that are responsible for my feeling terrible today.I have a headache that just won't quit!I know smokers are terrible but I happen to be married to someone who is a wonderful person who happens to smoke cigarettes. He is not addicted to Crystal Meth or any other illegal drugs. His only legal addiction is to cruising and we feel Celebrity is going overboard today.I can't even keep up with this thread.I am tired from working 11 hours today and I don't approve of the decision Celebrity came out with today! Shirley and Less- hello again. I love that response of yours. One certainly could ad a complain about everything policy.

Kathy- I agree, I feel the same, my pollen allergies are horrible, starting from the end of may until September. Ths state of Bavarian hast until today refused to cut all the trees and burn the grass! Shame on them.

I really have planed to keep myself out of this new smoking discusion but could not resist. LOL

Greetings

Michael

I have 6 cruises book with RCCL now in suites and I will cancel them and head right to Cunard myself. I will not pay for owners suites if I'm not permitted to at least smoke on my balcony. As a shareholder I am very unhappy with this policy on Celebrity ships in this economy.

Sorry, your argument that this will "narrow its market" doesn't fly. Here in the state of Washington smoking was banned in almost every public indoor area two years ago. Thousands of bar and restaurant owners said they would be out of business in no time. In reality, two years later--bars and restaurants who said they would be out of business are thriving. I think that this move will make X grow. I am betting that there are plenty of cruisers on Princess, Costa and HAL alone who may switch because like the majority of non-smokers who have posted on this thread, they are sick of smoke.

We had a horrible time in the tiny Martini Bar on Century last November and all I can say today is HALLELUJAH!!!

I think you're right about the people switching to Celebrity. Unfortunately my favorite cruise line- Princess will probably get more of the smokers since they have yet to do anything about the problem except install a sprinkler system on the balconies.

Perhaps you've never had the pleasure of having a couple of heavy smokers (especially cigar) upwind of you balcony smoking day & night.

I wonder if Celebrity ever asked the question if areas of smoking vs non-smoking affected the decision to purchase a Celebrity cruise?

It hasn't been an issue.. until now.

Kerchink, kerchink.... that's the sound of money going back into the pockets of FORMER Celebrity passengers... and it hasn't even been 24 hours since the notice came out.

Yes, the cancellations are coming in.

And I predict the first modifications to the policy will be in the casino....

Maybe not. The three casinos in our area have made changes in regard to smoking. They are giving up less and less space to smoking areas..and they don't seem to be suffering from it.

When NY went smoke free indoors, all sorts of predictions were made of how the restaurants would suffer. It didn't come to fruitation.

Even Ireland, where smoking abounds, and pubs were a haze of smoke, got through it 4 years ago, and the pubs are still packed.

As a shareholder and paying customer I know I will. All I wanted was a smoke free balcony and I guess since the industry said they couldn't meet halfway(smoking side balcony,non-smoking side balconies) this was the only feasible solution. We love smoking/non-smoking slots. The excessive smoking keep our casino time to a minimum.
