High School Graduation present

Recommended Posts

Next year 6/09 our two oldest (both will be 18) granddaughters will graduate from high school. The first week after we would like to take them on a cruise with us. I was thinking a 7 day Eastern Caribbean cruise on Carnival Glory out of Orlando. Being only in the planning stage we have few questions in order to make it a memorable gift.

1. Do you think this would be a fun first cruise for two young ladies?

2. Should we consider a different cruise line?

3. Should we consider a different region?

4. How do we best accommodate them, in the same cabin as us or an adjoining cabin?

Thanks You

Your ship and itinerary choice will be fine for teens. Cruise lines do have a rule that if you're under age 21, you must be in a cabin with someone either age 21 or 25 depending on what cruise line. Some require the adult to be 21 and some have the age 25

Although Norwegians basic policy is one person over 21 in a cabin, there is the following exception which would apply to you:

Note: Two people under the age of 21 may travel together in the same stateroom without someone over the age of 21 in the same stateroom if they purchased the cruise under the family plan and have at least one person who is 21 years or older in the adjoining stateroom.

I think that the carnival ship would have a lot to offer your grandkids. We love the Eastern route. We have taken our two kids with us when we cruise for the past few years we just get a room across the hall (they are now 18 and 20 so no flames please) When we book we just book an adult into each cabin and go to the desk once we get on board and get an extra key. Has never been a problem. We also do want to be able to go in and check on them (or get them out of bed so they don't sleep all day and stay up all night!) Have a great time planning and I'm sure the girls will have a trip they will remember for the rest of their lives!

This will be an excellent present for your two granddaughters. Lucky that they have such generous grandparents. The Carnival is probably the best choice for them (not necessarily for you though). The Carnival markets to a younger crowd (20-40's) with children. You are more likely to have other teens on board to entertain your granddaughters and a better program. Because it is oriented to a younger crowd, you may not appreciate some of it but there will still be the dinners, shows, etc. for everyone.

I would never consider sharing a room with two 18 y/o girls (or boys!). Get two rooms adjacent so that you can keep on eye on them. Be sure to get a key to their state room so that you can "visit" them on a regular basis. Explain the rules carefully to them. There will be a lot of temptation on board such as boys, boys, boys and alcohol. Watch the crew also as there have been problems with crew members (who are fired immediately if they try to interact with any passenger!). This is just the normal cautions all parents use with their teens. One nice thing though is that they can't get far from your control on a ship and security is always watching.

You have to be 21 for alcohol but teenagers always seem to find a way. I have seen security on every cruise nab underage drinkers. They do watch and servers will be fired for serving minors.

Be cautious about the ports that you visit and don't let them go off by themselves. We Americans sometimes get too comfortable with how secure it may be at home. This is not always true in other regions of the world. In poorer countries they view us as very wealthy. That makes us a prime target in some areas. Be alert. Of all the ports in the Caribbean, I would particularly be wary of Jamaica. I would recommend staying away with young adults.

Go have a great time. It will be something they will remember for the rest of their lives.

Just a sideline, not sure where you are located, but here in MD (and I've heard other states), the week immediately following graduation is "Senior Week" - where all the graduating Seniors go on vacation - here they all go to Ocean City Maryland - been that way for decades upon decades and still going on. So you might want to double check the dates with them first :)

Two 18yo females? Get two cabins - for the second bathroom if for nothing else!

Honestly, I'm not pushing for NCL, but this post made me think of something else. This could be a good, or a bad thing! :-) NCL does allow 18 year olds to drink beer or wine while on board as long as a form is signed by their parent giving permission. You must also take a birth certificate with you. If they are mature young ladies and you would like them to be allowed to have a glass of wine with dinner, etc. then NCL is the only cruise line that allows that.

You are an AWESOME Grandma!!! The girls will definately have a trip of a lifetime and will have a blast! Great memories for all of you. We are hoping to take my niece for her high school graduation next year as well - I can't imagine a better gift! I also say get a second room next door or across the hall as long as money allows. If not, one room will do - if my grandparents had offered to take me on cruise, I'd sleep on the floor in a sleeping bag!

I would definitely get the girls their own cabin--what a MESS you will have in those small cabins with 2 older teen girls! All of you will be happier! And, you don't have to have an adult in each cabin--the cruiselines just want to make sure there are adults onboard and that kids haven't been booked onboard alone. They don't care who sleeps where!

Given these are your two oldest.... I assume you have others...... and thus are setting the precedence. Guess you also plan on the same for the others. ;)

My grandparents were just as generous in many other ways. :)

It will be a fond memory your grandchildren will always remember.

Our last cruise was sort of a graduation gift for one of my son's friends - also wanted someone with to occupy my 16 y/o. We always get a verandah, but can't afford 2 of them. We got the boys an inside just down the hall from us. Worked great for them since they were rarely there and if they wanted to sleep in the morning it was already dark.

Princess didn't have a problem with us doing this. They were even kind enough to get us an extra door card for their room so we could enter if needed.

I think your granddaughters would love a cruise!

This may be a problem. Age of pax for the duration of the cruise is determined by age on day of sailing. The teen club won't admit your 18 year old, and the casino is off-limits to your 17 year old. Your 17 year old must vacate the dance clubs by 10:45, and may not attend the midnight shows.

Is it too late to reschedule for after BOTH are 18?

Hi there,

This is what Carnival does: The booking will show one adult with one granddaughter and the other room will show the other adult with the other granddaughter. Just switch when you're on board - no problem - we do this all the time and there's never been a problem. Carnival has very good sized rooms and I think the ladies would really enjoy it! I've always had a great time on Carnival - in fact, I have 2 cruises booked with them this summer - the Paradise and the Freedom. Two rooms will be better - the ladies will appreciate their privacy for sure! As for the teen club, not to worry - they'll let the 18-year old in. My son is now 19 and liked hanging with the teens better than the 21 and over crowd. If the other one is only 17 but looks a bit older and mature, chances are, they won't bother her if she wants to walk through the casino or attend any of the adult shows at midnight. Some cruise lines might ask for ID - Carnival asks when they feel it's appropriate but I've seen them be a bit lax on some.
