You are correct, but even the prices that they charge seem reasonable to most of us who cruise on RCI regularly and who don't care to spend vacation time doing laundry or having to hear angry fellow passengers complaining when someone doesn't return to the laundry time as soon as their wash is complete. One of our tablemates on Dawn Princess suffered a less than pleasant encounter with another passenger when his laundry wasn't immediately removed from the machine when it was done.

This is because there are copious amounts of people in this world that are arrogant. Here's the deal: if you aren't back when your clothes are done, you should be willing to let people remove your clothes from the washer (ick, I have to touch someone's underwear???) and place them to the side. I'm perfectly fine to come in five minutes late and see someone has either done so or is in the process of doing so with my clothing. If you don't want it happening, then make sure you get your rump back to the laundry room before the machine is done. Period. I don't act holier than thou, so I'd appreciate it if people returned the favor.

If you include the cost of sending laundry out in your overall budget you will see that it is a minor item and you may conclude, as we have, that the convenience is well worth the cost.:)

When cruising Royal, I do budget that in. I also budget how much clothes I'm going to bring and how I will mix and match because of it. But again, I'd MUCH rather spend that money on something else than laundry. Just a personal preference.

You and I agree and I too would be perfectly fine if I came back five minutes late and found someone had removed my clothes or was in the process of doing so. What my tablemate found objectionable was being subjected to an angry rant from the person who removed the clothes and threw them on the floor. I guess arrogance comes in all forms, and encountering rude and boorish behavior is something I prefer to avoid when on vacation.

Now someone dumping my clothes on the floor is a different story...

I also re-read my post to you, and I wanted you to know that I wasn't referring to you (or your friend) specifically when I made the arrogant comment (or being willing to have your clothes removed). That comment was referring to a subset of the general public. I hope you didn't read into that the wrong way, but if you did, I apologize.

No apology necessary. I fully understood your meaning and only wanted to indicate that arrogant behavior can be found on either side of that situation. It really depends on the individuals involved, but is one reason that I prefer to avoid the potential hassle of doing my own laundry while onboard. I try to pack smart (becoming more difficult as airline luggage limits get tougher) and make use of the convenience of the excellent laundry service the ship provides.:)

So... how do we wash our clothes if we don't want to pay for on-board laundry services? Bathroom sink and towel rail?

That's one option. Find a laundry in port is another, if you feel like carrying a sack of dirty laundry off the ship with you. :)

How odd for such a large ship. I'm pretty sure they could have found some space to add a laundromat. There will be 5 of us and everyone knows how quick dirty clothese accumulate.

Just for your future cruise planning, Celebrity does not have self-serve laundry facilities either. Both RC and X offer some "stuff a bag" laundry deals, at some point in the cruise. It's good for things that can just be folded (no pressing), like t-shirts, underwear, and socks. We also bring a small bottle of Woolite, to rinse out bathing suits and unmentionables in the sink. But, be aware, there is only a small clothesline in the shower, so anything larger than a bathing suit is not easy to dry. Have a great cruise, and don't fret about the clothes -- whatever you're wearing will be fine. ;):D

I'm another one who is not happy that Royal Caribbean ships don't have laundry facilities. I don't want my jeans pressed, I don't want my T shirts pressed, and some of my things don't go in the dryer. On my first (and so far only, but that will change this weekend) cruise on Royal, I washed my things in the sink and hung them in the bathroom. We were on a three week trip and couldn't possibly pack enough things for that amount of time. I will continue to do that, even though it takes away from valuable vacation time. I don't want my nice, lace trimmed things destroyed by the laundry service.

Since you quoted the OP, I guess s/he has found out sometime in the past 5.5 years since the question was posted;):D

:DLIKE!!

I learned along time ago that taking half the clothes I think I'll need works just fine. When we did our last transatlantic we spent well over a week traveling Europe... and then on the ship over a week... then a couple of days in Boston... and I did that trip on less luggage than most would have for a week! My first transatlantic was different... way too much luggage... and way to much stuff!! There are so many web sites and YouTube videos showing how you can easily cut your clothing use down substantially. Or... go to the library and find a book... there are such good ideas. We have used the ships laundry without incident many times. The "bag" special works great and well worth the cost (which is about the cost of 2 drinks! or 10 minutes in the casino!)

I for one do not miss having a self-use laundry on the ship.... Been on ships that have had them... never used them...

You don't, or look for a different cruise line that offers self serve facilities.

But - at least to me - more interestingly, why did you dig up a 5+ year old thread to comment on?

On longer cruises RCCL usually offers a laundry bag special (wash and fold) for about $25. However, on our 14-night TA last November, it was offered on day 11...to be returned on day 13. Really...how stupid is that. Just in time to pack the clean clothes.

Princess is great for their self-serve laundry. On our 14-night, B2B on Princess, turnaround day was great to wash everything and start off the second week with a closet full of clean clothes. Love Princess!

FWIW, I'd venture a guess that he/she did what people are often advised to do - use the SEARCH to see if your question has already been answered, before starting a new thread! ;)

LOL, you have sharp eyes! Hope the OP took my advice anyhow -- even if it is a little "late". :p

I sure wish they had washers available...

We're divers, and our bathing suits and skins (full-body lycra suits) can get a bit sniffy after a couple days of diving. I can't send them to the laundry because they can't be machine dried. Trying to hand-wash and rinse in the shower with shampoo just doesn't do the same job.

When we're traveling on a ship that has laundry, I run them through a quick wash cycle, and our bathroom smells like fabric softener while they dry... not like neoprene and salt skank.

I do use bag day if we're running short of real clothes.

Way back when we used to do formal night, I would send our formal stuff to be cleaned & pressed just as soon as I hit the ship. The ship prices was only about a buck higher than our local dry cleaner, and I didn't have to worry about how things got packed... particularly DH's linen jacket. :)

Exactly, flamed because he, /she did or flamed if he/she didn't.

From memory (forgive me if I am wrong) the question of self serve laundry on RCI has been answered in the Ask Adam Blog where he said something like "you are on vacation you shouldn't need to worry about doing your own washing".

To look at it another way, most ships in the fleet, certainly all lead ships, start out with a 7 (or less) night itinerary where DIY laundry is less of an issue.

That was going to be my point exactly! 90% of Rccl's cruises are 7 days or less so for the most part no need to do laundry. The few longer cruises are usually repositioning or specialty cruises. No need to redesign ships for a few longer cruises.

Intriguing concept. Not having to worry about facts of being a human in civilization because you're on vacation.

I'd like to not use the bathroom while on vacation (after all, that's icky), but I'm human and it all continues.

We do not wash our clothes in hot and I put NOTHING of mine in the dryer. I simply cannot use a laundry service. I would adore a laundry room onboard. It's actually the EXACT reason we didn't cruise while DS was a baby. The absolute, simple reason. No laundry room? Not using your services. (we couldn't imagine cruising another line and I didn't even KNOW of the Disney line at that time)

I like doing laundry. It's calming. I sit with it (once had half of my clothes stolen from an apartment laundry room...I am still traumatized and I don't leave my stuff), read a book, relax, get away.... I can't sunbathe for more than an hour or two anyway, so it seems like a lovely way to cool down after lounging outdoors!

The Independence "special bag" is now $30 for as much as you can stuff into it. With two adults and three children, ours was bursting at the seams, and was pretty good value IMHO :-)

Unfortunately, then, you may have to eliminate RCI and its sister line, Celebrity from your list of possible cruise experiences. What is essential and "soothing" to you apparently isn't the same to enough others that RCI is about to change its policies regarding self-serve laundries. While you may enjoy standing guard over your laundry on a cruise vacation, others don't feel the same way and find that there are many other ways to spend their vacation time. Overall we find that the laundry service on RCI ships meets our needs and produces more than satisfactory results. Only you can decide whether this deficiency on their part is sufficient to remove them from your consideration.
