JustAnOrdinaryGirl Posted September 20, 2008 #1 Share Posted September 20, 2008 Hi I am looking for a cruise far north to the Northern Lights. Who would be best... I need a fairly large ship as I am not a good traveller...but hey thats what travel pills are made for. I've seen Norweigan Cruise Line and Hurtigruten... does anyone know if they are any good? Or can you suggest someone? I've also seen some offers for New Year cruises.. now that I would like to do as I hate NY in UK. Recommendations and comments appreciated! JAOG I have not researched this, but remember that in order to see the Northern Lights, it will have to be dark. That means you will have to go in winter. Most trips go in summer. You will see the Midnight Sun. You cannot see both at the same time. Hurtigruten is a ferry system that runs all year so unless you find a specialised cruise, it will probably be your best bet. Best of luck with finding one and let us know if you are successful. There are flights from UK to see the Northern Lights. Have seen them advertised in the Daily Mail

They alerted us in our cabin if the Northern Lights appeared so we didn't have to sit up all night... and they leave every day so you can select the size of ship/date of voyage to suit yourself. I'd choose one of the larger ships. If you're booking from the UK make sure you get the best offer... check the .us and .com websites before you commit. (If you're own your own make sure you're not charged single supplement during periods when it isn't being charged). I booked direct through Norway but of course this was only the voyage and didn't have the security of using a travel agent.

It's now essentially just another North American-market oriented cruise line. So it doesn't operate in Northern Europe during the winter. Is there any particular reason why you want to do a cruise in the very far north at this time of the year? There's going to be relatively little to see and do by way of shore excursions during the limited port time. The Hurtigruten itineraries generally offer even less port time than a conventional cruise becuase it is a working ferry system that happens to carry some passengers on cruise-type itineraries. If you want to see the Northern Lights, I think you're likely to be better off with a land trip. You'll get much more choice of things to see and do. And it will avoid your motion sickness problems. sailingkiwi Posted September 21, 2008 #5 Share Posted September 21, 2008 In February this year, I went up to Tromso in Norway to see the Northern Lights. They are simply amazing and I would say do it! The best views we had were when we did a night time huskey sled trip. The Tromso tourist information centre has all the information you need - http://www.destinasjontromso.no/english/index.html
Danish viking Posted September 25, 2008 #6 Share Posted September 25, 2008 Globaliser is wrong, Hurtigruten sails year round between Bergen in the south and Kirkenes in the north. And it is in fact a ferry service, but 2 ships or so sails to the south pole in the winther.

JustAnOrdinaryGirl Posted August 17, 2009 Author #10 Share Posted August 17, 2009 I have a friend who has just come back from a Hurtigruten trip to the Northern Lights - last month. Said they were excellent. Saw the most fantastic lights EVERY night ! Do you know how the ship was? Dont mean to sound snobby (as I am so not) but some ships seem a bit small. I know with Alaska I was on deck all the time for the wildlife but would need a few fun things to do too. :)
sidari Posted August 17, 2009 #11 Share Posted August 17, 2009 Can i suggest you go to the Hurtigruten website and request a brochure that comes with a DVD ... as we did ? .... lots of info in it and prices .... because they recomend going around March and April for the best chance of seeing the N.L. you are not likely to find any of the Big cruise lines going up there until at least May ..... i know the Crown Princess July 5th 2010, Ocean Princess 7th June 2010.... and Queen Mary 2 ...14th June 2010 and 5th July.
