Flying through JFK - do I have time to leave?

Arriving at JFK at 10:40am, then departing to Barcelona at 7:00pm.

Do we have time to leave the airport? Can we make it into Manhattan?

I don't want to miss our flight, but REALLY don't want to sit in the airport either. :) We were hoping to have lunch in NYC, maybe stroll Central Park or Times Square.

Thanks for the advice. :)

yes but it won't be much time a cab to manhattan is $45. plus toll and tip. assuming everything is fine you should be in Manhattan by 12 or 12:30. You need to leave no later than 3:30(same $45.00 plus toll and tip. later than 3:30 begins to get into rush hour(assuming during the week) about an hour to get back and check in should just about do it.

You can also take the airtrain, to the Jamaica LIRR station, and then the LIRR into Manhattan. You can walk from Penn to Times Square or Bryant Park. That should take about 30 minutes.

Just leave plenty plenty of time to go through security at JFK. I would plan on getting back three hours early.

Agree with this time frame. Either cab, car service, or Air Train.

Thank you very much!

Couple of follow up questions:

1) It appears we have to buy a MetroCard. How much should we put on it for JFK-Jamaica/LIRR-Penn and back again.

2) Can use use the MetroCard for the Subway in Manhattan?

Thanks again!

It takes more than 30 minutes from JFK to Manhattan on the airtrain/subway combo. It was be at least an hour or more with waits. Each subway ride is $2.00(except non stop interboro buses are $5.00) free transfers to bus . an unlimited card(bus and subway) is 7.50 good until 3 am the following day.

If there are two of you you can for $14.00 get 8 rides to be shared between you.

and yes the Metrocard is good on both subways and buses in all of NY City.

and all that is assuming your 1st flight shows up on time!

(you're right...JFK isn't exactly the greatest airport in which to kill a day!)

Not sure how this works, but some of the airline clubs let you buy a day pass....you could pop over to the cruise air board-lots of people over there who would know this info!
