superfind Posted October 23, 2008 #1 Share Posted October 23, 2008 Does anyone know what sort of things are sold in the shops on Independence? Specifically toys, as we're not planning on taking much in the way of toys for our 2 and 3 year olds, and were hoping to buy a few things for them on the ship. Sue L Posted October 23, 2008 #2 Share Posted October 23, 2008 Not too much in the way of toys, mostly souvenir type stuff you may want to visit a store before embarkation if you are counting on things to keep your little ones occupied.
cb at sea Posted October 23, 2008 #3 Share Posted October 23, 2008 Lots of "logo" stuff. I wouldn't waste my money in the ship's shops!
ckrobyn Posted October 24, 2008 #4 Share Posted October 24, 2008 Lots of "logo" stuff. I wouldn't waste my money in the ship's shops! Speak for yourself  I love browsing through the neat RCI logo items and have been known to purchase a thing or two. It's not a waste of money if you want to take a keepsake home to remember your cruise......sheeeesh.
Merion_Mom Posted October 24, 2008 #5 Share Posted October 24, 2008 No toys there, but what's the best shop on the ship?? The famous "$10 Crap Store"!!!!!
njdevil08 Posted October 24, 2008 #6 Share Posted October 24, 2008 We happened to enjoy the shops, but it's pretty much all logo apperal. But, it's different strokes for different strokes, as we heard many complaining b/c they thought the promenade would have the same types of stores as a mall. Though I must say not much in the way of toys for little ones unless you count stuffed animals. Besides, shop once you get in port unless you want RCI logo clothing as it is much cheaper and bigger selections.

Happy ks Posted October 24, 2008 #8 Share Posted October 24, 2008 There are always a few toys, but not much. Our extent of logo purchases stopped at beach towels and a Christmas ornament (a ship). I've never quite understood why people would want logo T shirts or other logo stuff, but to each his own. My souvenir purchases are usually art from the place we have visited, not commercial stuff that has short shelf life. I almost purchased a Murano glass necklace onboard a ship last week. The next port stop I noticed a shop with the same exact necklace and priced it....it was $60 cheaper than what the onboard price was, so I'm glad I resisted. Other than a bottle or two of Baileys when we drive to port, I personally haven't found any bargains onboard cruise ships. Be careful when shopping onboard! wannalottadough Posted October 24, 2008 #9 Share Posted October 24, 2008 As a preschool teacher, i need to tell you that you should purchase something from the local Walgreens instead of the overpriced junk you will find in the the ship's shops. Children that age don't care if they have something with a ship's logo on it and most of it is crap. enjoy your cruise and don't over spend when not necessary
iheartbda Posted October 24, 2008 #10 Share Posted October 24, 2008 Buy the drink of the day and let them play with the plastic souvenir glasses.:D
ILoveScotland Posted October 24, 2008 #11 Share Posted October 24, 2008 You got it :) AKA - Bijoux Turner???? I have a Bijoux Turner watch I bought at Harrah's Casino in Cherokee, NC for the standard $10, and it's my favorite watch. And I get lots of compliments. That said, I agree with all the comments about shops on board. Too expensive including the logo stuff.
crusinmama06 Posted October 24, 2008 #12 Share Posted October 24, 2008 Speak for yourself  I love browsing through the neat RCI logo items and have been known to purchase a thing or two. It's not a waste of money if you want to take a keepsake home to remember your cruise......sheeeesh. Agreed! I love taking home something with a logo on it. I try to get a logo towel on every cruise (no matter the cruise line). And I also love taking home ship Christmas ornaments. I have a little ship for each cruise (yes even Freedom...lol). So every year when we get the decorations back out, the kids get to look back and remember where we have been over the years. :D I have cruise jackets, sweatshirts, t-shirts, PJ's. I love my PJ's....I get to go to sleep wearing cruise wear and dream about cruises. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA And my car keys have a little floating Freedom key chain. :D Yeah I am a little obsessed. :p
Diamond Girl Posted October 24, 2008 #13 Share Posted October 24, 2008 No toys there, but what's the best shop on the ship?? The famous "$10 Crap Store"!!!!! Is everything still priced at $10? I recently went into the Bijoux Turner store in Atlantic City and everything is now $15. Last year, it was $10.
alwayshappytocruise Posted October 24, 2008 #14 Share Posted October 24, 2008 Yep, it's $15 but on our Mariner cruise in July they had a buy two get one free which I figured made it a $10 store for the night!! Love the shawls and the ties, they also have some pretty cool evening bags. Wonder if the Sov. will have one this weekend? Heard they're pretty much sold out of everything since this is the next to the last RCCL cruise on her.......

Linda/Ohio Posted October 24, 2008 #19 Share Posted October 24, 2008 They have costume jewelry, fine jewelry, postcards, rumcakes, t-shirts, $10 watches, expensive watches, evening bags..... I've not seen much aimed towards children---as passenger list is more adults. Perhaps they up the ante during certain weeks when school is out. You can find kids stuff--just not an entire childrens store or a toy store--more like a section that you would find in a Rite-Aid--but less shelf space.
