Bfson Posted October 24, 2008 #1 Share Posted October 24, 2008 Having just come off of a wine themed cruise on Celebrity during which we encountered horrible wine glasses (straight sided, no narrowing at the top) I was wondering if any wine buffs can give me some detailed comments on what we will find on Regent Voyager. bev'sid Posted October 24, 2008 #3 Share Posted October 24, 2008 Yes, and actually they are Riedel crystal wine glasses - very nice. :) :) :) I don't drink wine anymore, but if you are a wine "enthusiast" they also serve Michelin 1 star wines. bev

newlondon Posted October 24, 2008 #6 Share Posted October 24, 2008 Sorry byrds eye unless you pay extra a Michelin inspector would give you a minus 1 star for the wines.
dougburns Posted October 24, 2008 #7 Share Posted October 24, 2008 Not so! The wines served on all of the Regent ships are excellent. Not only that, but you don't have to just be satisfied with the wines that are being served on a particular night. If there was, or is, a wine that has been, or will be, served during your cruise, you can ask for it. I only drink pinot grigio at dinner and I have always been served Santa Margerita, which is a very good pinot grigio.
bev'sid Posted October 25, 2008 #8 Share Posted October 25, 2008 I've got to ask. What are "Michelin 1 star wines"?? FYI Here is a link to a description of Michelin: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelin_Guide Guess there are a few other opinions, but I am quoting the data I received from the chef. :) bev
Rare WesW Posted October 25, 2008 #9 Share Posted October 25, 2008 Doug, for a different Italian white..IMO as delightful as SM PG, try Gavi de Gavi: Gavi comes from the Piedmont area of Italy, and is made primarily with the Cortese grape. The two wines coming out of this region are Gavi and Cortese di Gavi. This is Italy's most expensive white wine shipped to the US. Gavi, for Italians, is the standard "Bianco" (white). Gavi tends to have a straw color and a neutral, mild aroma. It is very acidic. Its unassuming flavor is usually fruity, persistent, dry and balanced. Gavi goes very well with fish. We had it on the Navigator last December..and I get it weekly at our local package store ($15/bottle) here in metro atlanta. cheers, Wes

Rare WesW Posted October 25, 2008 #12 Share Posted October 25, 2008 Debbie, super list thanks for posting...unfortunately one cruiser (JimB) now aboard the Navigator Discovery cruise posted this today: "The complimentary wine selection is following the stock market. No more Copolla Claret. Instead there is Yellowtail shiraz, Caliterra merlot and several other wines that sell for $6.00 to $8.00 at the local grocery store. The wines are good, but not the standard they were just a few months ago. You'll find that many of your favorite selections from the past are no longer offered. Hard loquor selection at the bar hasn't changed (yet.) Maybe comment cards will help." Debbie, your list is chock full of premium wines (like Regent advertises), Yellowtail and Caliterra are not premium wines.
newlondon Posted October 25, 2008 #13 Share Posted October 25, 2008 Debbie's list of wines proves my point perfectly. The 2006 lists are far more sophisticated and obviously more expensive. I would definitely give them a 1*. On our latest from Venice to Istanbul we didn't have any thing close to even the 2008 choices.
Travelcat2 Posted October 25, 2008 #14 Share Posted October 25, 2008 According to a source recently on the Navigator, wines that were previously complimentary have disappeared and lesser quality wines have been added. I would prefer not to drink Yellowtail -- that's just me:confused:
Bfson Posted October 26, 2008 Author #15 Share Posted October 26, 2008 I'm just going to pull a few bottles from my cellar and bring them along. Life is too short to drink mediocre wine on a vacation.

Travelcat2 Posted October 26, 2008 #17 Share Posted October 26, 2008 Yes -- the wine was just fine (there was even a nice Washington wine that was very good). I also drink martini's -- no problem getting Grey Goose and Chopin.
postnobills Posted October 26, 2008 #18 Share Posted October 26, 2008 Yellowtail??!! We're paying $1000/day to be served Yellowtail? At this pace, it will be down to Two Buck Chuck by the time we depart next year.
Wendy The Wanderer Posted October 26, 2008 #19 Share Posted October 26, 2008 I do expect better than Yellowtail, I admit. Although I drink it all the time. And here in Canada, it costs over $10. I don't mind it, but I don't consider it special, for sure.

I would prefer not to drink Yellowtail -- that's just me:confused: how long ago? i just got off the ship a few weeks ago and there was no yellowtail to be found. or are you just throwing that out there for the heck of it. Regarding bringing bottles from ones cellar, they also have wine you can purchase if you're not pleased with the bottles they are serving. I was quite pleased with the wine selection, both the complimentary and the bottles for purchase.

The poster who reported that Yellowtail shiraz was being served on the Navigator in lieu of some wines from the former "complimentary" list, is on the Navigator now doing a multi-segment cruise. Hopefully, this was just a temporary supply problem. I'll be on the Mariner in three weeks and will post my experience with the "complimentary" wines being poured. I'll drink most quaffers without a problem, but the 6-8 dollar bottle is not what i'd expect from Regent, especially given the 12-20 dollar bottles we enjoyed last month.
