Cherbourg to Paris - doable?

We're looking at a short jaunt (4 days on HAL) in July and are wondering if there is a way to see Paris? Ship docks in Cherbourg ...

 

If not - what is there to see/do in Cherbourg?

I think Paris is a bit far for a day stop. We rented a car near the pier and went to the Normandy beaches, Bayeux Tapestry and Caen Memorial. Great day.

Which car rental company did you choose? So far Hertz is the only one that shows any availability for our date with an automatic.

We used Europcar which is affiliated with National. http://www.europcar.com Their office was about a 10 minute walk from the pier. Also try www.arguscarhire.com that is an Irish company that rents throughout Europe. I have good luck with them elsewhere in Europe. N.b. Cherbourg is a major Ferry Terminal and there is a fair demand for rental cars.

It's too bad the car rental companies seem to be closed on Sundays in Le Havre - because we have the most port time there.

 

*Europcar had no automatics at the Railway Station location, and I'd rather not go out to the airport.
