We will be arriving in Florence Pisa on a sunday, are most things still open or will we be restricted. If we do it on our own is transport likely to be bad.

All replies appreciated

Most tourist oriented places will be open (restaurants and the like.) Museums will probably be closed. Historic sites will be open. Transportation will be pretty much like it is everyday. All in all, plenty for you to do and see. Relax and enjoy.

Most of the tourist shops will be opened (leather, souvenirs, gold), some clothing and designers shops are closed, but museums, restaurants and bars will be opened. As far as we know Monday is a bad day in Florence.

Enjoy your trip!

In Florence, Monday is the day for museum closures. There are a few that close on Sunday

On Sunday, all tourist places will be open. Shops that cater to locals will be closed.

http://www.mega.it/eng/enot/musfi.htm gives a good listing of museum opening days and times.

In Pisa, the only museum that many foreigners visit, Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, is open 7 days a week.

I am presuming that you are arriving by cruise ship and you have part of the day to take an excursion to Florence and Pisa?

They are two seperate places and about 100 kilometers (60 miles) apart. Takes about an hour and a half to get from one to the other.

As much as I think you should visit the Uffuzi or the Accedemia, I am certain you will not have time. They both require several hours and then your time in Florence is gone. If it is a tour you are on, I would choose ot just do a walkbout.

In Florence, make it to Ponte Vecchio. Don't buy any jelwery elswhere until you have seen the offerings on this maginfcent Bridge, everything is at least 18 carat gold. Then, the San Lorenzo Market for leather goods. Finally, the Santa Maria perfumery in Stanta Maria Novella district. It is a perfumery that has been in the same family for 5 or 600 years and they make fragrences just for you. There, your day is done ha ha.

We did Florence and Pisa by train in 1 day and had no problem. We took the train to Florence first. We saw The David and walked around Florence, shopped, ate lunch, and took the train back. We got off at Pisa, hiked up the tower, took the bus back to the train, and were back in Livorno by 5:30.

How close to Livorno port is the train station? Where in Pisa is the station to get back to the port? Any complications? Thanks for any info!!

We took a taxi to the train station in Livorno, about a 15 min drive. The taxi drivers try and talk you out of the train and want to drive you to Pisa. Don't do it. They rip you off. They charged us 25 euros for the taxi to the train. We found another couple that wanted to take the train and split it with them. The train ride to Pisa is about 20 minutes. It is the same train that goes to Florence. We went to Florence first and got off in Pisa on the way back.

When you get off the train in Pisa, take the bus to the leaning tower for 2 euros. It drops you off right in front. It is a 30 min walk from the train station to the leaning tower if you don't want to take the bus. It was very easy and we had no problems. If you want to go inside the tower you need reservations, as they only let 20 in at a time. here's the website:

There wer taxis waiting at the Livorno station when we got back. You can also take the bus to the town square of Livorno and take the shuttle bus back to the port.
