What to do in Monte Carlo?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

We will be in Monte Carlo, Monaco in August fot 1 1/2 days. The first half day we thought we would just wander around, visit the casino etc. On the second full day we would like to do a private tour. Any suggestions or reputable companies we could use?

Thanks

In terms of Monte Carlo there is a lot to see there.

The Palace

The Cathredral

The Oceanaire Museum

The area located near the Casino and near the Palace.

The outdoor gardens

It is a nice place to walk around as well as the size of this area is relatively small.

Monte Carlo is not the most interesting of ports. A few obvious places to visit but then get off to Eze, St. Paul de Vence, Villefrance and other Cote D`Azur interests.

As mentioned above, 1/2 day is fine for Monaco, I'd spend the other day getting to other villages. A good tour guide will be able to cover Eze, St. Paul de Vence and Villefranche easily in a day. You could just search here for guides, there are some very good one's operating on the Cote d'Azur. I would also check on your roll call to see if someone is looking to share a private tour. There's so many beautiful places to visit in that area, don't limit yourself just to Monaco.

We used Michel with Revelation tours and he was excellent. He has a brand new Mercedes van that seats 8, and is very knowledgeable about the area. He took us to Nice, Eze, Monte Carlo, and Cannes. He dropped us off to roam and shop, and would be waiting when we returned. He spoke excellent english, and knew the area very well. We split the cost with 2 other couples from our CC roll call, and it came out to 61 euros p/p plus we each gave him a tip. Highly recommended!!icon7.gif

We just booked Reveltion tours for a private tour in July. They recommended Nice, Eze, Monte Carlo, and Saint-Paul de Vence. Based on your itinerary, you went to Cannes. Should we revise our itinerary? Do you recommend Cannes? If so, what should I eliminate? It's very hard to see everything in 8 hours. Did you have enough time to see the interior of the sights, or just the exterior? Any recommendations for lunch?

I wouldn't add Cannes for anything that's on your list, it's not that exciting. We had lunch in St. Paul de Vence on our tour and it was lovely.

We have been to Monte Carlo twice. This is a VERY easy port to do with pubblic transportation. For just a couple of euros you can take the bus from Monte Carlo to Eze - a charming French town up in the hills. Walk around there for awhile and then take the same bus on to Nice. In Nice you can go to Vieux Nice - the Old section - it is so charming.

Last year we took the bus from MC to Nice early - went to the flower market and had soca - a local yummy food made out of chick peas - it sounds better than how I just described it. We went back to the bus station and took the bus again to St. Paul de Vence. I have been to many places and I do not know why but I just loved St Paul. We walked around and went into the samll museum - they offer a walking tour for just a few euros - well worth the time. Took the bus back to Nice then on to Monte Carlo.

There is a tourist information booth as soon as you get off the tender - they can give you maps and bus schedules. We looked at hiring a guide for the day but it so over 500 euros - for less than 10 euros a person we went all over and had a great experience.

JMHO but this is one port that can easily be done on your own. BTW - I am not an adventurous traveler - If I can do it, anyone can....

As another independent traveler, I am grateful for your clear and encouraging information regarding getting around MC and neighboring towns. We'll be there for the first time in April and your post answered so many questions in a few paragraphs, saving so much research and time!

Thanks so much!

We will be in Villefrance in July on a 2 week med cruise with our 2 teenagers. Since we will be doing a lot of museums, etc in other ports, we thought it would be nice to take them to a beach while in Villefrance. Can anyone recomment a beach? We aren't "fussy" people and don't need a resort feel, just a nice beach where we can relax and sun ourselves. Although our kids have never been to a topless beach, we are not offended by them so that is not a problem.

Neither am I. I was in Monte Carlo many years ago, and can't remember anything but how beautiful the harbor was. Someone told me they had to pay close to about $20 to enter the casino! Outrageous! I like the public bus to the places you mentioned since my partner never was there. Ok, I will let you know how it works out. Going in June.

Thanks. bjrose;)
