RCI Potty Training Question

Hi, we're travelling with friends on our upcoming cruise and their daughter will just be 3. They picked this cruise date because they wanted both their daughters to be able to use AO but were not aware of the toilet training policy. I don't think she's fully potty trained yet. I know that RCI has a no diaper policy, but would they know if she was wearing a pull-up? Has anyone tired this? I think they are working hard on getting her potty trained and still have some time, but we're just trying to plan ahead.

Yes, they'll know---pull-ups are pretty obvious. And no--they won't let anyone (baby or adult) in the pool in any sort of diaper. Even tho a diaper can contain the "solids", water still flows through---and then you have the "teabag" effect. Yuck. Do you want to swim in that?

Some of the ships have a baby "splash" area....does yours?

She's asking about the kids program - it's not a diapers in the pool question. I've been avoiding RCCL until one of mine is completely out of diapers so I'll be interested to see an answer on this as well - but I'm assuming that no pull-ups are allowed either.

Best,

Mia

To join AO, children must be 100% potty trained - no accidents, no pullups. They must be able to complete all toileting skills independently. No reminders, no help with wiping, no help with underwear or pulling up or down pants.

I'd had a RCCL cruise booked last summer. It sailed the day after my ds turned 3. As the time got closer, it became apparent that he would not be fully potty trained by that point. For that and other reasons, I cancelled the cruise.

They are pretty clear on this:

To participate in Adventure Ocean, children must be three years of age and potty-trained (no pull-ups or diapers).

There is no way the staff wouldn't know the child was wearing pull-ups.

Royal is VERY strict with this.

The wording is that the child MUST BE 100% potty self sufficient. Which means - NO HELP in the potty. They can't go with the child into the bathroom. Can't unbutton pants. Can't wipe. etc.

If they see that she is wearing a pull up, they will remove her from the program. :(

they are very stict about the policy. but they do have a 3 strikes until your out program. they give you a pager, if the child has an accident they will page the parent to come and pick up the child. after the child is cleaned up, you can bring them back and then have two more accident chances.

Thanks for your help everyone. I'll pass on the info to our friends. I'm thinking that if she was consistant and really put her mind to it she can have her trained before we go. I'm not really going to worry about it....our girls are 8 and 11 and can't wait to head to AO.

It's not just potty trained on RC......the first night when you register for AO, they stress that they must be potty trained and be able to go INDEPENDANTLY! They will not help you out in the bathroom. They told us this over and over and even reinforced it once we handed in our registration form to them to ensure that we understood.

Since they won't help the little ones in the bathroom, are the toilets small enough for them to use easily? DS usually prefers to go on his own but he is only so tall. I'm thinking that the toilets in the cabins aren't that tall but I havne't taken the kids and really looked at it from that perspective. Thanks

From what I remember, the bathrooms are in the hallway right before the entrance to the Kid's Club (I was on AOS) and the counselors never ever let the young kids out on their own. From what I remember my daughter telling me (she was four at the time), the counselor's DID take the younger kids to the bathroom and also made sure that they washed their hands after going potty. I believe that the toilets were smaller but I could be wrong about that.

You are right - the bathrooms are just down that hall in AO and the big door was always shut once the program started so they couldn't leave but my daughter went to the bathroom alone - with a buddy but not with the staff. Maybe because she was 5 and very independent and the staff stayed at the door to AO down the hall standing by the cargo net gate - with full view of the bathroom doors. Must be different for each kid and who is working that day! Regardless on whether they are escorted or not, the point the AO staff made to us during orientation was that they must be toilet trained and be able to do it independently - they are not permitted to help (pants etc)
