andy03 Posted March 31, 2009 #1 Share Posted March 31, 2009 Is it possible to take steam iron on board to iron clothes ?
BaumD Posted March 31, 2009 #2 Share Posted March 31, 2009 If you are on the Independance, RCCL prohibits passengers from bringing irons. They are a serious fire hazard.
cb at sea Posted March 31, 2009 #3 Share Posted March 31, 2009 If you mean a steamer, then yes, lots of folks bring them.

Yes, these are, but why aren't cigarettes considered a fire hazard?
Betsy's Mom Posted March 31, 2009 #6 Share Posted March 31, 2009 No cruise line allows irons to be brought on board. All the Carnival lines (Carnival, Cunard, Princess, Holland America etc) supply irons in their laundry rooms. Irons are a big fire hazard and pull a great deal of current and can blow your cabin electricity. B.
Guest TropicOne Posted March 31, 2009 #7 Share Posted March 31, 2009 But steamers are also on the prohibited items list. Carnival does not prohibit hand held clothes steamers. Not sure about the other lines.
Shorex Posted March 31, 2009 #8 Share Posted March 31, 2009 Yes, these are, but why aren't cigarettes considered a fire hazard? Of course, cigarettes pose a fire hazard; as do irons, candles, and heating elements. Cruise lines cannot eliminate all guest-created fire hazards, they can only minimize them. The fact that cigarettes are dangerous is not an argument for opening the floodgates to all fire hazards. When you hear the crew going through a fire drill, they are not just going through the motions. Fire is one of, if not THE, most serious danger at sea. wrp96 Posted April 1, 2009 #9 Share Posted April 1, 2009 Carnival does not prohibit hand held clothes steamers. Not sure about the other lines. The OP is sailing Royal Caribbean which specifically prohibits steamers.
paul929207 Posted April 1, 2009 #10 Share Posted April 1, 2009 Leave your iron at home. You will find one in the self service laundry.
pms4104 Posted April 1, 2009 #11 Share Posted April 1, 2009 The OP is sailing Royal Caribbean which specifically prohibits steamers. Further, the OP did not ask about steamers ... rather, about steam irons, not unlike the iron I have here at home that accepts water for ironing with steam. wrp96 Posted April 1, 2009 #12 Share Posted April 1, 2009 Leave your iron at home. You will find one in the self service laundry. Which doesn't help the OP as RCCL doesn't have self-serve laundries.
wraithe Posted April 1, 2009 #13 Share Posted April 1, 2009 Yes, these are, but why aren't cigarettes considered a fire hazard? They aren't worried about you setting fire to your clothing while you're standing there looking at it, they are worried about overloading the electrical system and causing fires inside the bulkheads. Much harder to find, and drastically harder to put out. I've been onboard a ship during a fire, and been onboard ships for many fire drills. They're never fun.
G'ma Posted April 1, 2009 #14 Share Posted April 1, 2009 No irons. They are fire hazards. Invest in a small hand-held steamer or use the facilities onboard.
Putterdude Posted April 1, 2009 #15 Share Posted April 1, 2009 Irons are prohibited on all lines that I know of...even the travel ones. Irons have a history of turning themselves back on if left plugged in and causing fires; I have personal knowledge of this but ask any fire inspector. Rare NorbertsNiece Posted April 1, 2009 #16 Share Posted April 1, 2009 I asked the specific question at a Q&A on board the RCI Jewel of Seas, why aren't irons allowed on board? The Captain's specific response : safety. That'll do for me.
