marving9999 Posted April 6, 2009 #1 Share Posted April 6, 2009 This is our 14th cruise however our first to the Mediterranean. For the most part, in the atlantic and caribbean, the waters are fairly smooth. There will be an occasional rough day or night. Can anyone tell me how they would compare the waters of the caribbean and atlantic, to the waters of the Mediterranean. Are they smoother or rougher. We are going to be traveling from Venice to Athens to Instanbul and then to Naples Rome Florence Monaco and finally to Barcelona All responses are appreciated. GSPLover Posted April 6, 2009 #2 Share Posted April 6, 2009 For both of our Med cruises (Italy, Croatia, Greece, Turkey and Egypt) the waters were pretty much smooth as glass. These were June and October. The only place we encountered any kind of a 'sea condition' was coming into and departing Alexandria. Still very moderate. ab0si Posted April 6, 2009 #3 Share Posted April 6, 2009 In the summer it tends to be quite smooth sailing. BTW, the western Med is considerably "bumpier" than the eastern part. The Barbarossas (corsair brothers from Tunis) used this as part of the rationale to convince the Sultan to put them in charge of things out that way. Rare Keith1010 Posted April 6, 2009 #5 Share Posted April 6, 2009 I have been there numerous times and no voyage is precisely the same here as it is anywhere in the world. With that said, in general, we have found the seas to be fairly calm in the Med but you could encounter some roughness for say a few hours or part of a day on your trip. The latter is not so likely but can happen. We try to book a cabin that is as mid ship as possible which we find is helpful. Keith
lisiamc Posted April 6, 2009 #6 Share Posted April 6, 2009 The Mediterranean can be really rough in a storm. Last November, our ship was late docking in Athens because of high winds, but it wasn't really rough. But just off Civitavecchia, the Grand Princess had a really hard time. They got hit by a large wave that briefly knoocked out the engines and the electrical power. So the Med is like any large body of water - sometimes gentle, sometimes fierce! mauimary Posted April 6, 2009 #7 Share Posted April 6, 2009 We were in the med last Oct. It was pretty smooth sailing until the crossing back from Malta to Barcelona which was quite a rough day. It was also our last day. Our stateroom was aft on deck 9 so we really felt the motion. It was much better once we went down to the center of the ship on deck 4 & 5.
