Edinburgh/South Queensferry

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My husband and I are going on a Princess British Isles cruise this summer (July 19th). We are thinking of buying an Edinburgh Pass to the attractions.

  • Is this practical? Are the attractions of Edinburgh fairly close together?
  • What is the best way to get from the ship in South Queensferry to Edinburgh?

Thank you for any help you can give us.

We were at S. Queensferry last year on an NCL cruise. We were ferried across immediately under the famous bridge. Taxis were waiting there, because the whole little town knew there was a cruise liner in. Most people walked up the cliff to the station to take a train into Edinburgh, but it is a stiff walk up the steps.-jocap.

Edinburgh is a very pedestrian friendly ciy and the attractions are all within walkable distance or using the HOHO bus. Suggest starting at Ednburgh Castle (Easily walkable from Edinburgh Waverly if you arrive by train from Queensferry), leave and head off down the Royal Mile and see any of the following.

http://www.the-royal-mile.co.uk/

An easy downhill 15 minute walk with so much to see. Make sure you stop at St Giles. When you get to the bottom of the Royal mile go to holyrood palace. Then head up to Carlton Hill

After that walk down to Princess Street and walk up the Scott Monument

Enjoy a lunch or a walk in princess street garden. If you have time use HOHO bus to go visit the Royal Yacht Brittana,

You could easily do this in a day. Other than the yacht everying else is within a few(hilly) miles.

Edinburgh is a very lovely city and hope you have a nice time.

There are 3 main options Taxi, train, bus

The train is a hike up the hill once up the hill this is probably the easiest,

The Bus a flat walk along the front, but not so easy to find the stops.

here is a google maps link with the tender station(Hawes Pier) and the rail station(dalmeny)

If you zoom in on the left had side the bus stops are marked for the buses that go to Edinburgh.

The centre of Edinburgh is a bit of a construction site at the moment (they're building a tram route). Princes Street is the main route. I'd definitely recommend the suggestion of starting at the castle and working your way down the Royal mile and generally exploring all the wee side alleys (Closes0 off it. the old Town is not affected by the construction but unfortunately i cant say the same for the new Town. They are suppossed to be suspending some of the worst of it during the festival (August) but that isn't going to help you since your cruise is in july. There is loads to do and see , so you wont be stuck.

Hope you have a great trip to "Auld Reekie" and that the weather is kind to you.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much for all of the suggestions. I wish we had more than 1 day to spend in Edinburgh.

The Edinburgh Pass ( http://194.106.151.179/citytour.aspx ) is a ticket to 30 attractions and we want to see all of them. Unfortunately, we will have to choose only some since time is limited.

Your other suggestions sound good also. If only we could stay longer......

Again, thank you for all the links and help you have offered.
