Requesting an upgrade ?

I am a first time cruiser and would appreciate your input on this question.

A friend who has cruised numerous times told us that, she never unpacks right away, because she always stops in at the front office to see if there are any possible free upgrades.

Is this at all likely ? I know that if we stay at a hotel, we often ask if there is any chance of an upgrade to a better room - can we do this on this ship?

BTW - we are sailing on May 30th, on the Zuiderdam, 7 day inside passage to Alaska.

Upgrades are pretty rare nowadays. You can check for an upsell, where you pay the difference between the price of your cabin and the new one, and sometimes they can reduce the upsell price a little bit.

You can ask, but as they say... if wishes were horses beggars would ride.

It doesn't hurt to ask. Never seen or heard of anyone actually getting an upgrade this way.

You have a better chance of asking if they are selling any upgrades when you check in. If they do have them, they are more likely to sell them at a discount at that time.

EVery cruise I have been on have had signs at the pier saying no upgrades are available, however as soon as I have been on the ship and pass through the lobby I see a LONG line of people most of which seem to be trying to do just that, and being told nothing available.

if you want an upgrade or upsell the time to try for it is the week before sailing.
