Smoking Policy on Golden Princess?

Can anyone tell me what the smoking policy is on the Pricess ships? I am a non-smoker. My husband and I were on a Carnival cruise in March and we were surprised by the amount of smoke around the ship. It was so bad that you could even smell it in our dining room. When I talked to the customer service people they agreed, and promply moved us to the other dining room. We will be on the Golden in August and I was hoping for a better experience.

Smoking is allowed only on one side of the open decks..starboard i think :o. There is also a cigar bar in which people can smoke. If you have a balcony, you may smell smoke from people on their balcony. However I have never smelled smoke in a dining room.

I don't know about the Golden but on their other ships I have smelled it in the dining room & I won't accept a seat anywhere near the entry way for that reason. There are many smokers who can't make it through the whole meal without a cigarette & step out side for a quick puff & on some ships it gets sucked into the DR. I've only noticed it if you're sitting right near the door and normally it's not a problem.

Some of the lounges (not the main show room) also have a smoking section to one side & you can smell smoke if seated to close. It pays to get their early to get a seat opposite the smoking section.

I think you will find that you may get an occasional whiff of smoke, while walking down a corridor on the passenger cabin decks, as some people do smoke in their cabins, but will not find the smell of smoke "everywhere". The air handling equipment seems to do quite a good job of removing smoking odors. And the stewards do an exceptional job of deodorizing cabins that previous passengers have smoked in. I've been told they use "Oust", which is a great deodorizer. Others have said that if you notice that your cabin has a lingering odor, all that is required is to tell your steward, and they re-clean, replace drapes, etc.

We've never walked into a cabin on boarding day and smelled residual smoking smells. Nor have I ever noticed any smokey smell in any dining room.

Very hot topic, (no pun intended).

You can be exposed on any Princess ship. It all depends on how many smokers are onboard, whether you are on a balcony or not, etc etc.

There is absolutley no way to tell ahead of time.

You see the comments about smoking because it comes from non smokers who are very sensitive to the smoke and the issue at hand.

I don't smoke save a cigar now and then but when we sailed the Ruby or any other Princess ship for that matter each one was so different. :)

A few people who were on the Golden's first cruise since its drydock commented about how smoky the Piazza was (from the casino), and that the smell of smoke was also evident in the theater. I'll be on the Golden in 12 days, and I hope it's not like that on my cruise.

This comment about the smoke in the Piazza is what prompted my post in the first place. I read this earlier in someones review of the Golden's first voyage after drydock. It reminded me of how much smoke there was on my last cruise. I am surprised that they still allow smoking inside the ship at all.

I have never experiencd smoke in the dining rooms on any Princess ship.
I have NEVER smelled smoke anywhere near the dining room. I'm trying to think of a ship that has a lounge permitting smoking near any dining room but I'm drawing a blank. Most of the Princess dining rooms are on decks 5 or 6, and there's absolutely no smoking allowed on these decks.

My guess is that was residual smoke from workers. As I mention above, there's no lounge near the Piazza where smoking is allowed.

There is a very small area in the Vista Lounge and the Wheelhouse Bar... well there was a year ago... may not be the same since the refit?
There are smoking sections in the Wheelhouse bar and, I believe, the Explorer's Lounge. There is also smoking in the casino.

I was that person, and smoke was awful. I hope it is better for your cruise as well. But the fact that the casino is 10 steps from the main theatre doors does not help.

Don't flame me, I'm just passing on the information.

Everything you wanted to know about each cruise line and their smoking policy.

The following was taken from the last paragraph of the article.

"Where there’s smoke, there’s revenue — specifically, gambling revenue. Turns out nonsmokers don’t drink or gamble as much as their nicotine-addicted shipmates."

kathiatkins, Thanks for your post about the Golden. I enjoyed reading about the "new" Golden, but was disapointed about your comments about the smoke.:( Hope our trip will be less smokey than you described!

Maybe from the days of smoking near the elevators outside the dining room?

The casino was absolutely packed on the non-smoking night vs the other nights, so I am not sure I agree with that..just my observation.

There is smoking the casino which is attached to the Piazza. The doors are wide open and the smoke comes out. Sorry, but the Piazza smelled of smoke. The casino is on deck 6, so yes, there is smoking allowed on deck 6. I would agree though, i didn't smell smoke in the dining rooms. Just the piazza and the theatre.
