For Rome, how much more do you see using ril than walking in your own considering everything is close and you have a mapped out walking route?

Do you get history from the driver? Do they actually go with you except for places you need to pay like the coliseum?

You do get history from the driver, they are very informed. They do NOT go into places with you.

You could always just book one of their walking tours, which we have done 3 different times and been very happy. The guides are VERY knowledgeable, know how to avoid lines, take you to spots you may never have thought of or heard of.....the walking tours are usually 3 to 4 hours in length. They met us right at our hotel and we began from there.... :)

Gracie, the walking tour sounds good too... Someone to take us around. What of you wanted a combo of stuff from there walking tours? Are try willing to adjust? Can you do more than 4 hrs?

So walking is more educational and driving is more for farther distances?

They will definitely adjust the tours, and we extended one of our tours by an hour for a bit more money. Just email Jany, from their website at rome in limo dot com and she will fill you in all the details.

We did both walking and driving tours the first time we went. We found both to be well worth the expense, the driving of course was able to cover more areas, and our driver Nikola was wonderful and very knowledgeable. Serena was our walking tour guide for Ancient Rome and for the Vatican and she just made our initial visit to Rome so much better! You will be fine no matter what you choose! Enjoy:)

We did about the same, plus we offered to buy/pay for lunch for our guides where we could (since they stay with the van in some locations, not always an option).

I've found that in areas where tipping is less common, picking up a meal is a very good option from a cultural standpoint (of course, there may be places where I have not been where this is not so - so I always ask the guide and watch their reaction)

As always, its a personal decision. For the trip from the airport I think we tipped around 15%. So the cost was 60 EU and we gave 70 EU. For the day tours we tipped between 10% to 15% and felt that the tip was well deserved for the experience we had.

We had a great experience with Rome In Limo last month. We had a driver (Mike) who picked us up at the port of Civitavecchia. We had a short list of places we wanted to visit and we also wanted to be back at the ship by 4:30 PM which we knew meant we'd have less time in Roma than most people take. We did not hire a guide.

We were greeted as we got off the ship and whisked to our van - it was the four of us and the driver. We had a quick chat about where we wanted to go and what we wanted to see to confirm the information he had been provided from Jany, and we were off and on the road ahead of most of the tour buses. And for those that were ahead of us, we passed them along the highway :)

Our first stop was the Basilica San Clemente, and our driver took us in to show us where to get the tickets, and then waited for us outside - he found a nice shady place so it wasn't hot when we got back. Next stop was the Forum where he took us to the side entrance opposite of where we wanted to end up, but on the way he made sure we saw where to go for the Mamertine prison and where to meet him. He gave us a phone so we could call him and he insisted we take his guide book that showed us what we would see as well as two umbrellas. We didn't want to take the umbrellas as it was one more thing to carry but decided it was in our best interest to not upset our ride. While we didn't use them, there were many people who were shading themselves with umbrellas inside. He also provided us with water (turned out it was the fizzy kind but we refilled the bottles with water from the fountains).

After the Forum, he took us to see a few other places including the keyhole on Aventine Hill and then he had arranged a place for us to have lunch. We had thought we would just get a snack somewhere, but he made a reservation for us at a local place near the UN building - it was perfect - not another tourist in the place. We asked him to join us but he said he won't eat if he can't have the vino (LOL) so he waited for us. Then our agenda was done except for Circus Maximus, so he took us there and then several other places including the hill where you can see the vista of Rome and also the Vatican - it was beautiful and we never would have considered going. He gave us a lot of historical information, kept our teenagers engaged, too.

When we got back to Civitavecchia, he took us to a local gelateria so we could have gelato, and we were still back to the ship in plenty of time. It was one of our favorite days, mostly because we were able to spend as much or little time at the places we visited and didn't have to worry about other families or the bus leaving!

Anyway, we would definitely book with RIL again for a tour or transportation. As for tipping, we added about 15% onto our negotiated fee because not only did he take us where we wanted to go, he enriched the day and provided services like making our lunch arrangements, etc., that we had not expected.

We've done Rome a couple times using RIL and also other areas of Italy. Best tour company we have ever used. Their drivers are very informed, courteous and very good drivers. You get to see so much more with a tour than a walking tour since some of the sites are a distance from eachother. And if you have any questions for RIL Jany will answer them very promptly using their e-mail. I can't wait to head over there again for more tours.

Rome In Limos walking tour are quite excellent too.....they are NOT just a limo company.... we probably enjoyed the walking tours more, the info is far more detailed ... but ALL their services are appreciated.

How much more detailed are their walking tours vs using an app or guide book for Rome?

Have no idea, probably more detailed on some things, less on others. We enjoyed having the guide because we had never been there before, had limited time and they knew where everything was so we didn't have to spend time trying to figure out the best route.... if we went back for a 3rd time we would certainly do far more on our own but for an initial visit I consider the decision to have the walking tours one of the best we've made.

I've taken walking tours in Rome (not through RIL, but my understanding is they contract this to a guide anyway).

It's not so much a difference in detail. Most guides give you the same info that you'd get in a good guidebook or app. But guides also tend to give you "stories" -- some like this, I do not. Many of them are highly embroidered or completely untrue.

Also, with a guide, you don't have to worry about finding your way around. Of course, the guidebooks give you directions but they can occasionally be a little difficult to follow, especially in the evening. (Remember this if nothing else: Rome street names are usually found only high up (like 2nd storey) and tacked onto buildings.)

All in all, I prefer to do it on my own -- I can stop and linger where I like, for example if I see a place where I want to sit and have a glass of wine -- and I'm usually pretty good with directions. But there are pluses or minuses each way, I guess.

We sailed the Serenade of the Seas in June. I booked three tours with RIL because it was our first experience as a family in Rome, Florence, and the Amalfi Coast. I can say that this was money extremely well spent! Not only did we see everything we wanted, but we never waited in a line. The temperature outside was hovering in the high 90s so it felt so nice to get into an airconditioned vehicle after each stop. I know we would have not seen as much as we did if we had done this ourselves. In Rome and Florence, we had vans even though there are only four of us but on the Amalfi coast we had a sedan as there were only two of us that day. This may be a little long, but I needed to express how much we enjoyed each of our drivers.

First in Florence, we were picked up at the ship by Clara ! We are in love with her! She made us feel like family making sure to call us all by our names! Our joke is now how many friends she has as we never had to wait in line anywhere. Whenever we mentioned something we might want to see, Clara arranged it! She took us to places where we made memories. Our son has a favorite sandwich place he had visited in Florence and Clara was able to find it so we could enjoy it, too. One of the highlights of our trip was our excursion to the olive oil/wine tasting where the wine was pumped into containers like gas is here. She included our kids, though they are 21 and 23. I cannot rave enough about her! If we ever come to Italy again, we will ask for Clara! Only bad thing is she set the standard so high, it was hard for any other driver/guide to measure up!!!

Rome was Allessio. We enjoyed him as well. He was not quite as talkative as Clara, but as I said, she sets a high standard. He got us everywhere we needed to be. Our wish to have native Italian food for lunch was his command. He took us to a wonderful restaurant and at our invitation, joined us for lunch.

Now, Raffaelle, and the Amalfi Coast. I do not do well with heights and was very apprehensive about this tour to the point that I even emailed Jany, RIL, from the ship. She calmed me and told me just to sit on the side of the car away from the sea. I am so glad I went! It was another memorable day!! Raffaelle drove those twisty roads with such ease that I was not afraid. He gave much history and stopped at interesting places. Lunch was so wonderful that we asked for more time at the restaurant and he was very agreeable. I think the ultimate was when he put Italian music on his radio and sang. He had us singing as well. After a limoncello, I might add. Raffaelle was very personable and a wonderful driver. He should not be missed! Our children chose to climb Mt Vesuvius that day so they did not experience Raffaelle and are very tired of hearing about our wonderful day with him! I think I may want to live in Sorrento for a while!!!!! and just learn to cook!

The transportation time of 1 1/2 to close to 2 hours flew by because of the mini stops we made and the information provided by the drivers. Each driver lived in the particular area so when each spoke, we could feel a love of the area. Because of the time constraints at each port and the transporatation to and from the cities, we felt that RIL did everything in their power to make our trips fabulous! and it was indeed.

Thanks everyone for the great responses and the early wedding wishes! I have been in contact with Jany and she's provided some decent information. I have one main question, that I would love some advice on:

I am planning on seeing Rome Highlights, basic Coliseum tour, private Vatican tour... are we better off with a driving tour or a walking tour with RIL?

We need others to join our group and have found one couple that wants to save money and take a walking tour with RIL, and take the train from the port. I am not overly concerned with the money (although its 10 Euro tour vs 94 Euro), but rather with getting into Rome quickly and easily and seeing as much as we can within reason of course.

Choices:

Rome Highlights (driving, round trip transit)

Secret Rome (walking, round trip transit)

Essential Rome and Vatican (just walking tour, need train)

Is it better to have a walking guide with us full time, or better to have driver in Rome?

I'm not crazy about the notion of dealing with the Trains, and worrying about train back to port... is a driver from port worth the 80 EUR/person to avoid trains?

Ok, so this was an overly-complicated "one question", lol... but I'd love some help! :D

The Rome Highlights is definitely the way to go. They met us at the ship at 8Am and we were touring the city by 9:15AM. All along the way we were given wonderful information about what we we seeing. We were able to see twice what most of our fellow passengers managed to see in a day, even those with other tours. The drivers with RomeInLimo are experts in packing everything in you want to see. It was worth every cent.

We booked two tours with RomeInLimo. What can I say Salvatore made our day in Florence spectacular! Enrique made our day in Rome simply amazing! We cruised on The Serenade of The Sea on June 23, 2013 out of Barcelona, Spain. I am a cancer patient and my mobility is impaired. I was concerned that I would not be able to keep up and see everything or hold others behind. My husband wanted me to have this amazing trip. He began researching on cruisecritic.com and found that several people were posting tours with RomeInLimo. Some people were looking for other individuals sailing on the Serenade to join them and share the cost of the limo for the day.

I was a little nervous about the expense when we booked the tours, after doing a lot of research and calling the company I became convinced that this was the best opportunity for me to see these two amazing cities. Salvatore met us at the dock in Florence with a very clearly marked sign at 8:00 AM. There were eight adults in our group with our first stop in Pisa. Salvatore gave us wonderful information; what we were seeing and information about Pisa throughout our drive to Pisa. We had plenty of time in Pisa to take our photographs, tour the city center and pick up a few post cards.

Then we were on to Florence. We went to Piazza del Duomo, and had time to walk around and explore. Salvatore chose a perfect outdoor restaurant for us right in the square. He got us in with NO waiting so that we could enjoy our meal. We had tickets for 1:00 PM to see Michelangelo's David in The Galleria dell' Accademia. When we arrived there was quite a line and the gentleman at the door would not let us go in he instructed us to go and wait in the line. Salvatore escorted us to the spot at the end of the line and asked us to wait patiently. He returned a few minutes later and ushered us to the front of the line and into the Accademia. It was an amazing experience. We chose a meeting time and place and he was right there with a big smile, waiting for us in the shade! Then we were off again to Palazzo Vecchio. We had some time to wander and take photos, and then we went to a magnificent high point above the city where we could look down on the city of Florence. It was breath taking. Before beginning our trip back to the ship we stopped at the copy of Michelangelo’s David, standing in Palazzo Della Signoria, and Salvatore took us for Gelato! Our day was nothing short of amazing it was worth every cent we paid.

Our next day was spent in Rome with Enrique. Again there were eight of us. Enrique met us promptly at 8 AM and we began the 75 minute drive into Rome. Enrique was light hearted, funny and very knowledgeable. We were able to see so much of Rome thanks to Enrique's clever scheduling, We were able to see Italyx, the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, the Pantheon, the (Basilica Santa Martyres) obalysc, Basilisa di San Pietiro, Basilisa di San Pietiro, we toured the Colisseum (we only did the first level because of my health), and of course we did a tour of the Vatican. Enrique asked us early in the day if we would like for him to set up lunch for us. We all agreed we would go with his suggestion. But WOW we had no idea. We went to an amazing family owned restaurant. The courses just kept pouring out of the kitchen, each one accompanied by wine and water. Every time we thought our meal was over another course came out. I believe we ate five courses of food and then dessert was served with Limoncello and a VERY strong aperitif. Our tour group conversed in advance and decided that we wanted to pay for a private guide for the Vatican, our guide was Chiara. Chiara was arranged for us by RomeInLimo. She was fantastic! We were able to see so much and Chiara knew exactly what to call our attention to. It was amazing. There were thousands of people in there. Our tour guide held up a recognizable blue and yellow flower above her head throughout the tour so that we could all stay together. She even used her little body to block others from getting in our way.

I would highly recommend RomeInLimo Tours they were kind, professional, and knowledgeable, light hearted and made our days exceptional. We were more than thrilled with our decision.

We (three couples) on a Mediterranean cruise used RomeinLimo for private tours in Rome and Florence. If our drivers are any indication of the overall company, I HIGHLY recommend them - and if you ask for Nicola in Rome and Sabrina in Florence, you can be sure that you will have an outstanding visit. They did a fantastic job of getting us to all of the highlights, and we never lost time finding them where we were done walking around at specific locations - the car was always right there. They were right on target with how long we should spend at each site to see all the attractions we wanted to see, and their recommendations were perfect.

After getting a personal recommendation and them looking up the references on Cruise Critic and Trip Advisor we quickly booked a three city package for Rome, Florence and Naples. We Cruised with Holland America, which we enjoy very much, but their excursions are over priced. The transfer fee from the port to Rome was over a $100/person. We are a family of four and were traveling with our elderly parents, the Rome excursion practically paid for it self, plus getting around the city quickly and easily was a priority. The RomeInLimo Company and our drivers: Giovanni, Maurizio and Angelo were exceptional.

I each port we were met at the Port, right outside the ship. They had our planed trip, but were flexible... We changed one destination along the way and they were happy to accommodate. The drivers were friendly, helpful and informative. Apparently, Italy has laws about tour guides, so they could not enter venues and also act as tour guides, but anywhere they could pull over, we would get out, take pictures and get a history lesson. What we did not expect was VIP treatment. In Italy, they can drive down roads, and sidewalks closed off to NORMAL traffic. They would pull right up to the venue, let us out and we had to only walk a few feet in many cases. Remember our elderly parents... it was perfect! This was their third trip to these destinations and the drivers took them to more places than they had ever been on previous tours with various cruise lines. I have no doubt that I will personally recommend RomeInLimo to everyone I meet going to Italy. When we return, it will be the tour company we choose to use again.

Well hello again. Hope everyone is well.

We were on the same tour with you and the Nap's with Salvatore. We agree that it was money well spent. Do you realize that it was 38 days ago. We were in other vans on the Rome day and Salernodays. Every tour was wonderful. Our driver for Rome was Mauricio and our guide was Katerine for the Vatican, Collisseum and Forum. That day was wonderful as well. From Salerno, our driver was Fernando who was a great drivedr on Amalfi and quite a character, very funny. I do not remember our Pompeii guides name, but he was very good and kept us moving. I have many fond memories of our day together.

We used RIL in Rome and they were great! Franco was our driver in Rome and he was a very good driver, gave us good information on the sights we were seeing and was very courteous and a good sense of humor. He picked us up in a minivan right at the port from our Norwegian Epic cruise and we were quickly on our way. We arrived in Rome by 9 am. He did a great job explaining how long we had in each area and where we should meet up with him if he had to move the van. Francesca was our guide at the Vatican and she was very sweet and got us into the Vatican very quickly as we had pre purchased tickets like Jany had recommended(this is really important) because the lines were so long. She moved us quickly into the Vatican explaining all the important sites. Thanks to both of them for a great day in Rome! I would love to go back and spend more time in Rome. It is such an interesting city with so much to see and do!

I meant a personal walking tour. We've done a couple RIL walking tours and they were great. I was comparing tours with RIL as opposed to tours by yourself. Funny story. When we did a walking tour of the Vatican our tour guides name was, of course, Mary. And I believe she could speak 3 different languages.

I didn't know that RIL did walking tours. We will be there a few days pre-cruise, and was the thinking that might be the way to go. We previously did the regular tour on a port day and it was great as everyone says. Anyone else have comments/opinions on the walking tours? We were thinking of the coliseum/forum 3 hr tour.

Soccermotha, Your trip sounds wonderful. Can you give me the name of that Great restaurant in Rome that RIL guide took you to? Thank you

We just returned from 12 night Disney Med cruise and the RIL tours we used were our favorite ports. We are usually a DIY family for tours but used RIL twice on our trip. This was our second time with RIL and I cannot recommend them more highly. We had 7 of us from ages 15 to 78 use RIL on tours of Florence/Lucca and Rome.

We had a lovely day in Florence and Lucca with Sabrina who was timely, fun and informative. We headed to Florence first and hit the highlights of the Duomo, the David, and the church of Santa Croce. I cannot stress how important it is that the RIL cars and vans can go into pedestrian areas where others cannot. We were dropped off right where we wanted and maximized our time at the sites. Sabrina arranged a magical lunch down a quiet street on the 'other' side of the river. Best pasta we had in all of our travels this year. After a quick walk across the Ponte Vechio, she took us to the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte with a postcard picture view over Florence. It was practically deserted and the church was being prepared for a wedding. After Florence, Lucca was a time for gelato and shopping. A fantastic day.

As good as Florence was, Rome was better. We had Maurizio again for our guide and he is outstanding. His love of Rome comes through and makes you want to come back and stay. He arranged a pickup of my mother and friend who were doing a Disney ships' tour half day Rome on your own and half day Vatican . We met them where the ships tour dropped them off and Maurizio whisked us around town. It was very hot so we skipped getting out for the ancient sites but he gave us an informative driving tour around the Forum and Palentine hill, a stop at the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain. We had a nice lunch at a 'local' place with a link a couple posts up. After lunch, we dropped the 2 off for their Disney Vatican tour. This was 'free Vatican' Sunday and the morning crowds were unbelievable. Disney had the tour after the museum closed and Maurizio timed the drop off perfectly. The rest of us spent the afternoon in the catacombs--a nice spot to spend a hot afternoon (underground). He again timed our visit perfectly as it was practically empty when we arrived but packed with tour buses on our way out. We asked him to stop for wine on our way back to the ship and he took us to a grocery so we didn't have to pay tourist prices for local wine. Maurizio is the man!

You will not regret spending money on a RIL tour. The value they offer is worth any savings you may get on other tours or trying to do these ports on your own.

After reading about Rome in Limo, we booked the Florence/Pisa tour. We had Vinny as our driver and he was great! We didn't get tickets for the Accademia, deciding to see the replica and throw in a Tuscan winery instead. Vinny took care of it! We went to a great winery, saw the countryside, climbed the Leaning Tour of Pisa (which we hadn't planned on but Vinny helped us get tickets). He was so great and informative and very flexible. It cost more than the ships excursion but well worth it! We would never have seen the winery or the little extras Vinny introduce us to.

We were sorry we didn't book other tours in the other ports.

Vinny was waiting for us when we got off the ship, even a little early!

We had a wonderful day!

We were lucky to have somebody organise tours on our roll call and joined 4 others on the Rome Highlights tour. Francesco was an excellent driver, meeting us at the port and we were at the Coliseum just after 9am. What followed was a day that far exceeded our expectations covering far more than we thought. Lots of interesting information and being dropped off and picked up at the sights meant my mum could enjoy everything. Definitely the way to "do" Rome!
