let me say first I am from Las Vegas so I am from a tipping town I always tip well at casino's and Restaurant's however this auto tipping thing I am scared of cause you have no proof that the cruise line is sharing all the tips with the employee's who work hard and deserve them.thats why I always tip on my own.I just do not trust these big company's.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you remove the auto-tip and tip directly, it goes into the tipping pool anyway and is distributed to those in the pool; the crew you've tipped doesn't get to keep it unless the total is more than the auto-tip.

If you have a concern as to whether someone receives the auto-tip, ask them when you get onboard. They'll tell you.

I understand what you say and agree with you, I always tip on my own.

Then you obviously don't mind that it still goes into the same pool. :)

Honestly I don't care what they do with their money after I tip them, I just feel strongly about tipping people who help me directly, not indirectly. Those that help indirectly need to be paid by the cruise lines in some other fashion, its not up to me to tip them. Add it to my fare, that doesn't bother me. I enjoy my relationship with the crew and just like any good relationship, it has to work both ways. I take care of them all week and they take great care of me, I have never had anything close to a bad cruise.

I think that's great. So many people forget about the waitstaff in the buffet (or dining room) for breakfast and lunch and their cabin stewards helper and I'm glad to see that you take care of all of them, even the ones who aren't directly assisting you since they often deserve as much or more than the ones who do.

Well here we go again..:rolleyes::rolleyes:

We are just talking, surely it can't bother you if we are just discussing the topic, Pam is giving her point of view and she speaks from the heart in trying to do whats right. I have a different opinion, thats all. We are not name calling.

The cabin steward helper receives from the cabin steward, we always have that understanding. I most definitly do not take care of everyone in the buffet, I do take notice who takes care of me but in answer to your statement, I most definitly do not take care of all of them. I tip way over what I should, I have always found good tipping leads to better service but as you can tell I feel very strongly that one should not pretip. That is me, I have made my feelings known to the cruiselines as well.

My point of view is probably influenced by my experience in 2001, before auto-tipping, when I was on the old Royal Princess for the first cruise following a 102-day world cruise. The waitstaff and stewards were totally demoralized because MANY of the passengers walked off the ship without tipping a dime. 102 days of service without any recognition. They were heartbroken. About three months later, Princess introduced auto-tipping and I wanted to cheer. So yes, I feel passionately about the auto-tip because I've seen the other side of the coin. :(

And that is just wrong when someone does that! I remember people not sitting down to eat at the last meals so they wouldn't have to tip. I do understand alot of the problems. The cruiselines to me have gone to far with autotipping, to me its just not right and I most definitly don't support it. Those who don't tip are just wrong. However a tip is very personal to me, let the cruise lines set guidelines but tipping will always be something I do in private.

Well the thread is "my opinion on Auto-tipping" so here's mine.

I am neither pro or con on the whole tipping thing. I realize that this is part of cruising (like eat out or taking a cab) and accept it. Over all I probably like auto-tipping more then just giving it out because I would feel that some cheat b***** tipped nothing and I need to make it up. What I want to see is the cruise company raise the price on a cruise by $11 a day, pay the help more money and advertise that there is no tipping. I think Holland American did this years ago (have not been on one of their ships in a long time). thus

Pay the people more, everyone pays their share, pay the whole price up front and Best Of All......

No more tip threads on Cruise Critic.......:p

Yes, there are. I've seen them and had them come in on several cruises in the past year or so. They are most visible when extra cleaning is necessary.

Now you 2 cheerleaders play nice....don't get your pom poms in a tiff and you KNOW its against the rules here to correct someones spelling! LMAO!! :p

There are no cabin "Stewart" helpers. :)

You are missing the point. Note the word Stewart is in quotes. Stewart is a person's name, not a job title. Steward is a job title. So, unless the cabin steward is named Stewart, the helpers are not Stewart helpers, they are steward helpers.
