Jeans on the SPirit

Hi, we are planning to take the NCL Spirit from Boston to Bermuda in July. I have read in the ship's restaurant descriptions that most don't allow jeans or shorts after 6pm. Are they strict on the no jeans policy? I have traveled multiple times on RCL and Carnival and haven't had a problem. Thanks.

Sometimes they are, sometimes they're not. Usually it's just one dining room (which one will be announced in your daily newsletter) that is a "no jeans zone", but even then, it seems to depend a lot on the hostess, how rushed they are, etc. From what I read here on the boards, it also seems like the dress code for the Caribean/southern cruises are much more lax than the one I was on, from NYC to Quebec, Canada (New England Fall Colors Cruise) where I did see people turned away who came to the dining room in jeans.

Just go to the one of the two main dining rooms that DOES allow jeans. No shorts at any dining venue at night other then the buffet. The menu's are exactly the same in both dining rooms.

Come on, you're on a cruise. Especially to Bermuda. The dress code is resort casual. Surely you could forego the jeans for a week.

No, I probably couldn't. It's one of the reasons that I like NCL. I get very cold in the dining rooms.

NCL does have a great policy about jeans compared to other cruise lines. If that's important to you, then I can see why NCL would be a good fit.

The FAQ section at NCL's website explains that "nice" jeans are allowed at "most" restaurants during dinner time.

A couple pair of khaki's weigh less in your luggage than a couple pair of jeans, and are accepted everywhere you dine.

Plus, khaki's will keep you warm too. ;)

I just got off the Spirit, and each time I dined in Windows (the designated no-jeans restaurant) there was at least one guy in there wearing jeans. I even saw one guy in shorts (and it was a sea day, so Bermuda formal was not in effect). I wouldn't risk the shorts (I also so another guy get turned away), but they are very lax on the jeans.

Wow, tough crowd. I noticed this was your first post; did you join just to offer me fashion advice? I feel special!

To clarify my question: I have always packed my dark suit for formal nights and a mix of khaki's and new or like new jeans (both blue and tan) for the rest of the nights, paired with a collar shirt.

I welcomed the 'no suit required' policy for this, our first NCL cruise but was wondering if my mix of jeans and khakis would be OK or should I bring all khakis. I really prefer jeans when given the choice.

Mix it up! lol Your jeans will be fine in most places. :)

Thanks to all!

Not having to bring my suit and being able to wear my jeans for a few nights will make me a happy cruiser!

I guess I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum. We treat going to dinner more like a date, wearing suits for formal night and slacks/golf shirts for other nights. I have never worn jeans to dinner but I do take a pair along to wear home and have worn them on cool days at sea.

Nothing says you can't wear your jeans but my take is nor for a dining room. I would stick with the khakis and mix and match the shirt. I'm a pretty informal cruiser wearing nothing but shorts and t-shirts during the day but I think one should at least dress up a bit for dinner - nothing stops you from changing into your jeans for a show, casino, bars etc.

Regardless of what you decide - enjoy and have a cold one for me.

I was on the Spirit last week. The sign in Windows specified no tank tops or shorts after 5pm. There was no mention about jeans - however, in the Freestyle Daily, it noted jeans should not be worn in Windows for dinner. I didn't notice the fine print in the Daily till towards the end of the cruise! I know I wore jeans once in Windows, and hubby did most of the time. No one ever said anything to us.

I think it all depends on the intent, and the shape those jeans are in. Nice jeans paired with a dressy top or shirt and fancy shoes look fine in the dining rooms at night. However, on our cruise last summer on the Gem, some people wore jeans that looked like they had been used to clean the garage, along with wrinkled or stained tops. Please, try to make an effort to dress up a little for dinner. Casual doesn't mean sloppy. Dress for dinner on a cruise ship should be a little nicer than what you would wear to the Outback or Applebees back home.

I noticed the same thing at Windows when I was on the Spirit a couple of weeks ago. And there were NO dress code signs at any of the other restaurants. I noticed several gentlemen wearing shorts (cargo, not Bermuda) in the Garden dining room at dinner.

Also, there was no "dress up or not" night on my 12 night cruise.

While I agree that khakis weigh less and keep you warm, I do not own a single pair of khakis and therefore jeans it is for me. I hate shopping and a huge perk of NCL is being able to pack what I already own and wear what I am comfortable in.

We ate every night in the dining room - the Garden Room whenever we were wearing jeans and in Windows when we dressed up a little. I did bring two sundresses and a skirt for dinner on some of the nights, but wore jeans about half the time and never had a problem. They were nicer jeans (as dressy as jeans get) and were clean and had no rips or tears. I paired them with a nice top and never felt out of place. Many people were dressed casually.

Even shorts are okay in the buffet or Blue Lagoon, and with room service a robe will be sufficient ;) Dress as you like, and I guarantee you won't go hungry!

I wear khakis/the equivalent to work every day. Trust me, my jeans are newer and nicer looking than my khakis. I like jeans. I want to wear them on vacation.

I say--it is your vacation--if you want to wear jeans----GO FOR IT!!!

No one's stopping you from wearing them on vacation, but you might not be able to wear them in one dining room at dinner.

My wife and I like to dress up for dinner, but I can dress up in a nice pair of jeans and shirt as well as khaki's and shirt. On our last cruise on the Spirit, I went with both khaki's and jeans on various nights and was appropriately dressed in all restaurants we visited.
