Oh.....just one suitcase? We usually have a large suitcase, a garment bag, and one or two small bags.....plus our carryons. I guess if we sail in September we will have to wait in line. :o

Off the Spirit June 12th...

I was worried before boarding because we had so much 'wedding stuff... Way more than two bags each and we carried on a lot because it was irreplacable and/or fragile. No problems.

I saw people lugging all kinds of big stuff around the ship before the cabins were ready... I must say the ones lugging huge amounts looked miserable but I understand that you can 'check' your carry-ons fore someplace - I think in/near the casino though we didn't do this.

I think the bottom line is if you can lug it nobody will give you any problems. However, if the size/weight is not issue i.e. blocking passage for others whilst you struggle I don't think you can 'carry on' ... whatever.

I hope MassPort gets their act together because the system at the Black Falcon during the peak passenger boarding time is pathetic i.e. everybody shuffling their luggage up in line a foot at a time to check it... ooooodles of time.

Excellent video Radio. Not many of us can do better. Anyone who has doubts about the Spirit should watch this video, it will put them at ease.

Thanks Don. . . I can get much higher resolution on YouTube (They accept a much larger video file). . . but I have to overcome their audio copyright test :o:o. . . It should be there soon.

Thanks for posting the video Radio. I enjoyed your live posts and all of your pictures. I miss recieving the posts on a daily basis. I do have a question for you about scooters. I can't decide whether or not to rent one because of all the stories you hear about Bermuda streets. What do you think?

I have always rented a scooter in Bermuda with no problems with each cruise (7). There are however many stories from people who have had problems with scooters.

I can tell you that the Scooter Rental shops really love cruise ships, because alot of people rent scooters.

I was told on the last cruise that when the Norwegian Spirit docks . . . that they rent over 100 scooters, and Explorer of the Seas passengers rent over 150 scooters.

Rental cars are not allowed in Bermuda, so the locals are used to scooters being driven on the island.

I think though you can find as many people who love scooter rentals as there are of people who hate them. . .

I do have a question for you about scooters. I can't decide whether or not to rent one because of all the stories you hear about Bermuda streets.

We stayed in Bermuda 6/28 to 7/5 and rented a scooter. I wasn't worried about driving the scooter, as I rode motorcycles for about 25 years. What was a bit worrisome was driving on the left and the round-abouts.

There's a big sticker on the handlebars of the scooters that says "KEEP LEFT." And their saying is "Left is right, right is wrong."

Driving on the left was okay after just an hour or so. I found it best to think twice when turning at a stop sign or light, you have to be sure to pull out in the correct lane. And to look for approaching traffic from the correct direction. Even on day 7 I wasn't too comfortable in a round-about -- I tried to be very alert when going through those. In the end it worked out well, we didn't get hurt and we absolutely loved being able to go where we wanted, when we wanted. We spent the better part of one day just driving and sight-seeing from beach to beach along the South Shore Road.

We did see a scooter accident, arriving just minutes after it happened. The fellow was still laying on the road and looked to be in pain. And his leg was pretty bloody too. Hope he's all right.

Gasoline is nearly $7 a gallon in Bermuda. I went through two tanks of gas in our seven days. And we avoided going any where near Hamilton between 8 and 9:30 am. And 4 pm to 6 pm, rush hour. And while Bermuda has pretty good road signs indicating which way to go, the signs are at the intersection -- you don't get any advance warning at all. More than a few times we'd overshoot a turn, have to turn around and go back.

And the funniest thing...after bouncing around Bermuda for seven days on a scooter with a questionable suspension, our aging mini-van felt smooth as silk when we got back home. We were accelerating leaving the airport and I was just amazed how smooth it felt.

:DThanks for the info Radio and Paul. I'm glad to see that you both had good experiences. As for the guy on the road, that's a little scary but who knows what actually happened. I really like the idea of being able to go wherever, whenever. My hubby thinks that we will have a lot of fun if we rent the scooter but I'm still thinking about it. I guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks!

I am no alarmist, and I don't want to scare you to influence your decision, but it can't be overstressed the importance of 100% diligence and constant awareness of the new environment if you decide to rent a scooter. While I was in Bermuda about 6 weeks ago, a retired police officer was killed when he apparently ran a stop sign and entered the main road in front of a bus. All the bus drivers were quite shaken up about it, and it was the talk of the island for several days after.

Things happen, both here at home and on vacation. You can't stop living life because there will be accidents, but again, just remember, you are entering a world that is not your "norm", extra and constant vigilance to that new environment are essential to making it back in one piece.

That's so true, Theron. We drove the scooter for seven days and did fine, but I can't stress enough how determined I was to get through the week without injuring my wife or myself. Staying safe was always in my thoughts when we on the scooter. I wouldn't have rented the scooter if I didn't have the previous experience driving a motorcycle here at home. I only had to concentrate on the driving, operating the scooter was second-nature to me (thanks to 25 years of on and off road cycle experience here at home).

Radio,

This was a great thread. The info and the video really made me excited to get back on the Spirit. Thank you.

Did you post pictures or comment on the menus. I may have missed them but I thought I would check. Is the Spirit using the 2.0 menus that were rolled out last year? Any help appeciated on this is welcome. We sail on 8/7!
