Nice Recommendations

Our highlight in Nice was our visit to the Chagall Museum on Monday, June 15. Because we were there on a Monday, the lovely flower market was an "antique" market, so we skipped our proposed visit there.

Why don't you tour with me, i am on your cruise. My mother lives there and would love the company, she will send her butler to the ship, and you will also meet my sister, she is one of the housewives of NY.

We dock in Monte Carlo and are thinking of heading to Nice. Any thoughts on things to spend half a day doing? We will head back to Monte Carlo in the PM and spend the remainder of the day there. Matisse Museum? This is in October on the Carnival Dream.

Any thoughts would be great!

Just returned from Med cruise and did most of the ports ourselves. Nice does not require a driver. If you are able to walk a little, then you should do it yourself. It is very very easy to do. From Monte Carlo, take the train. When you get off the boat, there is a booth in the terminal building that has information and maps. Just ask how to get to the train station and they will direct you. Then get off at the second station that has the name Nice on it. From there, just walk down to old town nice and the waterfront area. Simple, qucik, inexpensive.

We really enjoyed visiting the Chagall Museum there in June. Unique place which contains the 17 large murals inspired by the Bible which he designed and donated to this Museum, as well other works which make it the largest collection of Chagalls around.

The Matisse Museum is the other museum I would like to have visited there in June, but we were with six others who are not as art-interested as we are. However, they all enjoyed the Chagall visit.

We also would have visited the Flower Market in Old Nice, but it's an antique market on Mondays, the day we were docked in Monaco.

Last September we stayed in Nice for two nights prior to boarding our ship in Monte Carlo. One day was used to go on a 6-hr tour with Michel of Revelation Tours (Going to St. Paul de Vence, Tourettes sur Loup & Valbonne), the rest of the time was spent exploring Old Town area.

We stayed at the Hotel Suisse, which is right outside the "Old Town" section. We thought Old Town was just delightful. Lots of small shops, lovely buildings (Opera house, Palais de Justice to name two), and several very good bakery & pastry shops. As previously mentioned, the Cours Saleva Flower Market is a sight to see in the main square of Old Town. Everyday except Monday till around noon time. You could easily spend a whole leisurely day around Old Town.

A couple of other considerations which I think our worthwhile:

Le Chateau

(From the top, it provides you with a spectaular view overlooking Nice, the Promenade des Anglais and the Bay des Anges).

From Old Town walk out to the Promenade des Anglais. Make a left and walk 5-minutes till you get to the Hotel Suisse. Just to the left of the hotels main entrance you will see stairs going up along the building. You can either take a nice slow walk up the stairs, or you can pay to take the elevator to the top. The view from the park at the top is worth the effort. Once at the top, if you walk along the park with your back toward the Promenade des Anglais you will come to an area which provides an overlook of the port area.

Monument des Morts

This is Nice's war memorial to all those lost by France.

Once you come down from Le Chateau, it you walk past the Hotel Suisse & continue around the bend, within a 1/4 mile you will arrive at the Monument des Morts. It is an impressive structure, and accross from it you have a good view of the port. There is a wonderful yellow 8-10 story building to your left, which I thought was definately picture worthy as well.

Enjoy, however you decide to spend your time.

I was a little worried on what to do when we got to Monaco, now I see a full day of activities in Nice and in Monte Carlo!

Sounds like it'll be a great port of call...

Just a quick 2 cents worth regarding Monte Carlo.

1) The National Oceanographic Museum is a time worthy stop. The aquarium there is nicely done. It is easily reachable from the cruise dock. Walk to the end of the dock and take the pathway to your left, which goes right along the ocean. Its about a 10 minute walk to the museum.

2) Consider taking the Azur Express Tourist train, which is stationed right outside the Oceanographic Museum. It cost around 6 euros pp, lasts approx 30 minutes, and will take you by a number of the major attractions in Monaco/Monte Carlo. Here is more detailed info on the train:

3) If time permits, the casino is much more impressive when it is lit up in the evening.

Enjoy,

Anthony
