Hi

Im docking here 8am-6pm in September. I love Italy so think scenic here - people watching...Think I'd probably pick something beachy here (unless someone wows with me another option).... so can anyone recommend anywhere nearby?

Would prefer not to do ship excursion but dont want to spend a lot of money/time/hassle getting somewhere. Taxis Im not keen on so proabably something else.

Any suggestions?

As always THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!

Paula

You have posted 8 threads all with pretty much the same request. Have you done any research on these ports at all? Many are NOT near good beaches and have much more to offer than just shopping.

Cruise critic has basic information on all ports of call here:

And here is another good place to do a little research:

The old port area (Porto Antico) is rather nice for wandering around. It has an enormous aquarium there too, It is not far to walk in to the historic heart of the city either from there. There is a little tourist train that is not that expensive that takes you around the city in just over an hour (it leaves from the old port). If you fancy going a bit further afield you can do Milan by train in about 2 hours. if you want a good beach then you are going to have to go further afield than Genoa

Hi,

I lived in Genoa for a while quite a few years ago. I would make my way to either the Cinque Terre or Camogli and Portofino - all easily reached by train. If you do not feel like going too far from the port. Genoa is quite an interesting city. Wander in the "vicoli" (the tiny streets), check out the aquarium or the cathedral San Lorenzo and enjoy a nice meal. Be sure to try the local pesto - it originates from Genoa.

Have a great trip.

I would give a strong vote to visiting the Aquarium in Genoa. It is just a short walk from the cruise port (just walk along the waterfront keeping the water on your right) and the facility is truly world-class and even rivals the great Aquarium in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. On our last visit to Genoa (2 years ago) we were shocked at the improvements that Genoa has made to their waterfront. Years ago it was an area to be avoided, but now it is a great place to visit.

On my port stop in Genoa a few years ago, I took the ship's tour to Portofino...it was fantastic. We were taken by bus to a boat, then boated to the small village. It is a fantastic area. I wish that I had more time there. It was just a half-day tour. Next time, I'll go on my own and do it right.

When we got back to Genoa, I wandered around town, but most of the shops were closed in the afternoon. That was disappointing. Then there was a fire in the museum...so I just got on the bus and went back to the ship. I didn't find Genoa particularily interesting, but then, I hadn't done much research. Maybe Portofino spoiled me....it's been 3 years and I still can't stop thinking that lovely village.
