Looking to Boston locals for ideas

Over the past years I have had the pleasure of being in Boston about a dozen times, most recently Sept of 08. I will be returning for one day on a cruise in Sept of 09. I am really struggling to find something to do or see that I can't say been there-done that. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks and looking forward to my visit!

Try some chocolate covered grasshoppers from Cardullo's Gourmet Shop in Harvard Sq.

I've lived in Boston for 9 years now and just found out about both of these last week!

 

Another idea is to walk around Beacon Hill, shop a bit, and then grab a pizza from The Upper Crust and have a picnic in the Garden/Commons.

 

Or walk around the North End - it's really different in the daytime compared to when people usually go at night for dinner.

If you're a history buff you can visit the JFK Library. From the Black Falcon pier just hop on the Silver Line to South Station, then take the T's Red Line (outbound to Braintree) to the JFK/Columbia Point stop where there is a free shuttle back and forth to the library. Check out http://www.jfklibrary.org for more information.

 

Also on the same T's Red line is the Adams National Historical Park (John Adams, John Quincy Adams - good if you've read John Adam's book or watched the HBO series) at the Quincy Center stop, then exit the station and walk across Hancock Street - very easy to get to. Check out http://www.nps.gov and click Massachusetts parks fror a link. On that same website you'll find information about the Boston Harbor Islands you can visit (again, easy from the pier where you'll be).

 

About 40 miles south of Boston in Plymouth is Plimoth Plantation (replica of the Pilgrim Village of 1627 - read The Mayflower by Nathaniel Philbrick before you visit) and down by the waterfront area are the Mayflower II, Plymouth Rock and nearby Pilgrim Hall Museum. (Check out http://www.plimothplantation.org.) You'll probably have to rent car from Boston. The commuter trains and buses from Boston/South Station to Kingston and Plymouth don't go anywhere near Plimoth Plantation or the waterfront and there are no taxis at either train stop - I know, I live in Plymouth! There are also harbor tours and whale watching boats right from Plymouth Harbor, and there are some good seafood restaurants there as well.

I have just spent some time researching all of the great ideas you have posted. The tombs looked good to me but my wife....not so interested. The mapparium is closed the day we visit, love the north end but have been there for several festivals, the 1/2 price ticket idea was great but only tickets were evening and we'll be back at sea by then, been to Harpoon, and Medival Manor sounded great but timing doesn't work. However JFK library, National parks, and Skywalk Observation Deck are at the top of the list. Thanks for all your kind help!!!

Have you been outside Boston? There is ferry service to Salem. There are also ferry trips to the Harbor Islands. Does your cruise have an excursion to Lexington and Concord?

This is NOT thin crust, but absolutely awesome pizza. Galleria Umberto on Hanover St in the North End. It is only opened for lunch. They close when they run out of food. Usually around 1 or 2 pm. Everything on the menu is less than $4.00. Cash-only.

It is pretty far and a cab or train will get you there, but it is not walkable. Trolleys go right by it.

Anyone know how to get to the Boston Aquarium from the Black Falcon Pier? Can you walk or do you need to take a taxi to get there? It is supposed to be on the waterfront.

I'ts a long walk and a poor "T" connection. Silver Line to the Red Line to the Orange or Green Line to the Blue Line. If you go to Haymarket on the Orange Line, It's not too bad a walk. If you just take the Silver Line to South Station, it's about a 15 minute walk along the waterfront. Let us know and we can give you more details.
