Is this easy to do on your own?

I have found a ship excursion but usually prefer to do things independantly by train or even bus.

I dont mind which way round we do it but would like to see the Monaco marina area and the Casino at MC of course.

Thanks as always for any replies/help.:)

You have 3 options to do this on your own. You can simply walk from the tender pier to the train station (just walk along the water, keeping the water on your right until you see the steps that go up to the station) and take the train to Monte Carlo (a short ride of 15 -20 min). Once in MC you can walk, use the local buses, or even grab a taxi. Another option is to take the local bus (this only costs a little more than a Euro) from Villefranche to MC. The third option would be to hire a taxi, but this is very expensive (probably about 50 - 60 Euros each way).

Thanks as always Hank - do you know if I can then get from MC to Monaco?

Monaco is the principality, Monte Carlo is the city, but as Monaco is the only slightly bigger than Monte Carlo they are effectively the same place.

OMG Simon I never knew that no wonder I am having trouble finding them both! Never dawned me to look at it that way - how funny! Thank you so much!

Very easy by train and CHEAP, we saved a bundle rather than booking a ship excursion.

We are not into casinos so didn't care but we heard that 'regular people' could not get into the casino.

We were there when they were setting up for the Grand Prix, all the yachts in the harbour were gorgeous.

Have a great trip.

Strikes are relatively common in France, but they are seldom unexpected. In fact, you will usually see strike notices posted in train and bus stations with all the details. Many strikes are 1 day and often limited to certain regions or even lines. If this were to be a problem on your cruise, hopefully the cruise line's port lecturer will give you a warning. We have been to France more than 50 times over the years (often for more than a week) and only encountered 1 strike which was an annouced train strike.

Would have to agree, I did get hit on my honeymoon with a combination air traffic controller strike that forced us to take the train to Marseilles and then arriving in Marseilles we discovered a local train strike to Aix. It has been smooth sailing since then except for a museum strike that affected some but not all of the places we wanted to visit. But Wildcat strikes are rare, usually they are in response to something unexpected that happens that day they come up and blow off quickly. Do not worry.

We just got off the Voyager on August 9 and went to Monte Carlo by train. To put it bluntly, it was the "Train Ride from H**L!" Both coming and going, it was profusely hot - easily over 100 degrees F inside the trains. People were packed like sardines, families were seperated, no room to sit, and you MUST take precautions to hide your valuables as the way people were packed inside, it would be a pickpocketer's paradise.

For the three of us, the round trip fare was 15 euros, (5 euros a person, round trip). We did NOT enjoy any of the scenery, we could not see out of the window. Yes, it took only 15 minutes, but everybody was sweating profusely and it was, er......an uncomfortable (think no deoderant) 15 minutes.

Some fellow travellers took the bus into Monte Carlo, and although it took longer, it was sane and they anjoyed it. I think they paid 1 euro per person each way.

Take the bus. Trust me. Really.
