elycelynne Posted August 13, 2009 #1 Share Posted August 13, 2009 Just curious -- If I buy travel insurance that provides for emergency medical evacuation and if, heaven forbid, something happens where I'm unable to speak for myself, who could I let know ahead of time that I'm covered and the location of the phone number to call for emergency assistance? After all, I won't have a companion who can take care of that. Is there someone onboard who would handle of that kind of thing? Just a worrier, trying to cover all bases. :D
kitty9 Posted August 13, 2009 #2 Share Posted August 13, 2009 I take my policy with me, and keep it locked in the safe inside my passport. If you're injured, it's the first place they look. There isn't anyone on board to give this information to, so that's not an option.
jpg1747 Posted August 14, 2009 #3 Share Posted August 14, 2009 This is one of the reasons I buy my vacation protection coverage from the cruiseline and pay a bit more for it. It's part of my cruise documents and they know excactly what I have. I also bring along a printout of everything and keep it with my other travel papers. BlueC5Kitten Posted August 14, 2009 #4 Share Posted August 14, 2009 I think, with some cruise lines at least, you provide emergency contact information upon registration for the cruise. If the ship has to evac you for a medical/health reason, I'm sure your emergency contact will be reached.
Rare Roz Posted August 14, 2009 #5 Share Posted August 14, 2009 To piggyback on what Blue Kitten just said, I recently filled out the immigration form for my upcoming solo cruise on HAL. There was a required field for an emergency contact, which in my case is my sister. Before I travel anywhere, I give my sister my itineary, and when I cruise, a copy of the travel insurance policy. AmoMondo Posted August 14, 2009 #6 Share Posted August 14, 2009 I'm glad you asked this question. It had never occurred to me. I give my sister as my emergency contact on my check in information. I give her my itinerary, flight and ship emergency contact info but up until now, I've never thought toi give her my travel insurance details. i will now though! My one son is my Emergency Contact. He has Power of Attorney and a copy of my Living Will.
sbhdmh Posted September 9, 2009 #9 Share Posted September 9, 2009 Just wondering about this for my mother. My father passed away last year and she did Antarctica solo earlier this year. She wants to do Yangtze River solo next but I am uncomfortable with her doing this sort of "adventure" cruise solo. If something happens she will be alone in a remote area for days until a family member can get to her. Has anyone found a way to address this concern? I have asked her to try to go with a group if she is travelling somewhere that is remote and/or requires a visa but of course she will be the one to decide. Am I being practical or overly concerned? Any experience with this?
Dancer Bob Posted September 12, 2009 #10 Share Posted September 12, 2009 Many travel wholesalers and big agencies have escorted tours. I'm pretty sure I got at least one mailing for an escorted Yangtze trip not too long ago, but I forget who from. Travelling anywhere as a solo has extra risks but being with a group definitely reduces the risk.
