Brought Back: Amex Offer: Spend $500 on Booking, Get $100 Credit

Recommended Posts

I made a payment, not a new cruise booking. It did work for me. Not a definite answer, but the OBC would be refundable to you at the end of the cruise if you didn't need it.

That's a good question - it really depends on how the charge comes through from HAL to Amex. If the charge description is "Holland America Line Res" or something very similar, I think it would work. I know that people on another CC forum have reported that they have tried to use the offer to pre-buy on-board stuff (from the shops) or excursions but did not get the credit.

Doesn't hurt to try, I guess! Worst case scenario is that I have OBC. Thank you both. :) I shall report back!

I decided to try to redeem this offer on my HAL cruise even though I didn't owe $500 to be PIF on my reservation. I paid my reservation balance off, then bought a soda package and some OBC to reach the $500 amount required for the offer to kick in. I did this 2 weeks ago, and so far no emails saying I'd redeemed my offer, and the credit has not shown up. When I used DH's card last month to make a $500 payment towards the cruise balance, the credit showed up in 3 days, so I don't think I will see it this time even though the offer has been added to my card. I have a feeling it is because I had to make the payment to pay off our cruise balance through our TA, and I paid the other stuff through the HAL website. I can't help but wonder if I should have just called the TA and had her make both payments if that would have worked. No real loss to me since I would have been making those payments anyway, and since I still have the offer available, I will use it on our upcoming Princess cruise that I'm just starting to make payments on.

I made final payment on a Cunard cruise this morning and my confirmation from Amex about the offer showed up immediately. I just paid enough on the Amex to qualify for the $100 and paid the rest on a different card with a 3% travel rebate.

It's being reported on other CC forums that the web site link to add this offer to your card (if it's not there already) appears to be working for them. Those here that did not find it on their Amex card(s) may want to try this and see if they can make the offer available to their card now:

Thank you posting this. I added it to our 2 skymiles cards. A few days later I received a casino offer I couldn't refuse for a 17 day Hawaiian Cruise in an ocean view stateroom. Combining the Amex offer, FCD, air miles for flights, and a casino cash offer, brought our total cost down to about the cost of one round trip airline ticket to Hawaii.

Used this promotion on my last cruise with Holland, and I went back to see the offer page again to see if it was brought back.

"Get a $100 statement credit after you use your enrolled American Express® Card to spend $500 or more booking a cruise with Carnival Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Cunard or Seabourn between July 5, 2017, and December 31, 2017. "

The offer is not available yet on my card, but I'm assuming it will be available on the 5th. The previous dates on the last offer were until the 14th of April 2017.

I'll keep you posted when the 5th comes along.

I am new to this and am hoping you can tell me what and how to enroll y Visa.

Do you have online access to your Amex account?

Try this web address. https://global.americanexpress.com/offers/eligible

(You will have to log into your account to see your offers.)

Assuming you see the cruise offer, register for it there and then pay at least $500 toward a qualifying cruise. You don't have to wait until final payment.

I made a qualifying payment on Thursday and received the $100 credit on Friday.

taba's link should work for you. When I click on it it tells me I've already redeemed it.

Thank you for sharing this with everyone. Just got an Amex card (which offered a $150 bonus), and used your link to sign for HAL offer) If you're on our cruise, 11/26/17 From Tampa, would love to buy you a drink! Thanks so much, Fran

Sorry it took me so long to get back with another post. I was able to use the AMEX offer 3 separate times on the same cruise for $300 off our total cruise fare! If I'd known the offer on both of our cards (husband and wife) could be used, I'd actually have gotten to use it 4 times. It wasn't until we read someone else's post about using both cards that we were able to do so the last time.

Sure hope AMEX continues to make this offer. So far, it's shown up on our cards twice in a period of about 3-4 months. Thanks again to everyone who tipped us off about this offer!

I wonder if I purchased $500 of onboard credit for my upcoming cruise whether this would apply, given that it's a charge from HAL itself? My cruise is already paid in full. :(

I made a payment, not a new cruise booking. It did work for me. Not a definite answer, but the OBC would be refundable to you at the end of the cruise if you didn't need it.

When I had this offer on several cards late last year, I was able to buy OBC and take advantage of the offer. And whatever I did not spend was refunded to the credit card I used at check in (which was actually my only mistake, I had changed it to a debit card online before sailing but HAL didn't update it and put it back on my credit card, costing me points, I should have verified the change once on board). Don't use one of the AMEX cards you redeemed the offer on, or they may take the $100 back.

I just booked a new HAL cruise for next June. I have enough AMEX cards with the offer to pay for the entire cruise in $500 chunks, effectively saving me 20% of the entire cruise fare (and it's a 14 night cruise, so not cheap). In fact, I will probably have a couple of cards left over so I will just buy OBC with them. Last time, I called HAL and purchased OBC over the phone. See the info at the end of this post.

It's amazing that Carnival/AMEX allow what appears to be unlimited "clips" of this offer. When offers like this pop up for other cruise lines they're typically gone in a day or two. Not that I'm complaining, of course!

Update: found my posting re: buying OBC the previous deal's thread.

I bought OBC by phone today and immediately got the email saying that I had redeemed the offer. The phone number is 1-800-541-1576

Oh wow. Thanks for posting MisterBill. I didn't purchase the OBC because I was afraid of losing the offer in case it did not work. You have given me something to think about. Thank you.

You wouldn't lose the offer if buying the OBC didn't trigger it (which is unlikely given my experience, but things might have changed this time). It would still be available to use.

So, I wanted to mention that AMEX offered me a $25 bonus if I added new authorized user cards to a couple of my accounts (that's $25 per new card, up to 4, need to spend $250 within 3 months). I added my kids to a couple of my accounts. When the cards arrive, I'll set up new online accounts and hopefully be able to add this offer to those cards. Then I will pay $500, get the $100 back from the offer and another $25 credit for using the new cards! The offer was on the website, in one case it popped up when I viewed the account.

Wow, so glad I found this. I put it on two of my cards that never, ever got this offer. So that can go toward the remaining balance on my 2018 TA! The offer has worked out well for me, I've managed to use it on (or the previous offer where you got $250 off for spending $750) 4 cruises so far. I got to use the $100 one 4 or 5 times for my south Pacific cruise!

Just a reminder that this offer expires Sunday. I just paid off a June cruise to take advantage of AMEX paying for 20% of the fare :). Buying OBC *does* qualify for the offer. I was a few dollars short on the last card and had my TA buy $25 of OBC (has to be in $25 increments) and got the email saying I had qualified for the offer. Also bought $300 OBC on a card I'd previously paid $200 of the deposit on and got the offer email for that one as well.

I'm rather hoping to see the deal re-issued in first quarter of 2018 so I can take advantage of it a third time. :)

Yes, I was wondering if would come back again, but given that I had to pay at the end of March anyway, it didn't seem like a chance worth taking. Obviously if you've used it on all of your cards already, that's a different story.

Glad I was able to help you get some of AMEX/Carnival Corp's money (I don't think we know who actually pays for it)! Now you just have to book a cruise that I'll be on to pay for that drink!

Also great that you didn't even have to pay that early to take advantage of it. I paid 3 months early but it was worth it.
