  1. We are looking at the Dawn itinerary to Canada & would like to get feedback & info on this cruise. Itinerary includes Boston, Portland, Halifax, Charlottetown, Gaspesie, Saguenay, & Quebec. Any info from anyone who has done these ports would be appreciated. We have never cruised the East Coast only Alaska & the Caribbean.

  2. Wilderness Explorer & Crab Feast. We traveled by motor coach to George Inlet Lodge to board a small boat that went down the waterway where we saw bald eagles as our captain fed them bait fish. Eagles swooped down within feet of our boat. We made our way to the crab traps where we learned how they catch Dungeness crabs. Even go to hold one. Back at the lodge we had an all you can eat Dungeness crab feast. Been to Alaska twice & this is one of our favorite excursions.

  3. We sailed to Alaska on the Sun in June & loved the ship. We too were apprehensive of all the negative reviews but we had a fabulous cruise. We had a midship balcony & did not experience the smell problem. Cabin was a nice size but shower is small & I advise bringing clips to weigh down the shower curtain. Dining hall food was good & service was excellent. The Sun does not have all the bells & whistles of larger ships. Stardust theater is not large but adequate. We enjoyed shows & entertainers in the lounges. Our cabin steward was excellent. We did not notice any more signs of aging on the Sun than any other ships we have cruised on.

  4. Hi 3Fluffies,

I really enjoyed your review. We were on the Sun with you. We met on the observation deck in Vancouver on embarkation day. You took our picture & I took the picture of you next to the railing. I tried to help you with your Canon but couldn't figure out the problem. We were in cabin 9040 - we were neighbors & didn't know it. Marilyn sure did a great job of taking care of us. Our cabin was also very warm & we also had to call for it to be worked on. I really were impressed with the details in your review - I wish we had done a journal like you did. We had sailed on the Pearl to Alaska & were apprehensive about the older Sun but we very pleased with the Sun & would not hesitate to sail on her again.

  5. Our best excursions were Dyea Dave in Skagway & Wilderness Explorer and Crab Feast in Ketchikan. Dyea Dave is special because of the small group & his expertise of the area. He is a very interesting man who is excellent at catering to the needs of his clients' requests. I would combine Dyea Dave with White Pass Rail. George Inlet crab feast was great & our boat cabin fed the eagles right on the side of the boat. It was awesome to see them swoop down for bait fish about 20 feet from the side of the boat. Great photo opportunity.

  6. isitmayyet,

We saw humpback whales & a pod of orcas feeding while on the ship. If you want to see whales take an excursion in Juneau. Our favorite 2 excursions this trip were wilderness explorer/crab feast in Ketchikan and Dyea Dave to Emerald Lake in Skagway. Hope you enjoy. By 2018 the Sun should be fully refurbished. We had a midship balcony & used it quite often. Hubbard Glacier was quite impressive & huge. We had been to Glacier Bay before & thought Hubbard was more beautiful. I never thought our Sun cruise would top the Pearl cruise to Alaska but it did.

  7. BlueLadyBlue,

You are welcome. We were really apprehensive prior to the cruise after all the negatives reported here. The Sun is not the fanciest ship with all the bells & whistles but the itinerary is great with good port times. We did not expect the food to be great but it was very good & the service was good. Seeing 2 glaciers on one trip was a plus. We had never been to Hubbard Glacier & we were very impressed. It is huge! I walked a lot on deck 6 & never smelled any odors.

I read a lot of negative things about NCL ships on cruise critic & after 2 cruises to Alaska & 1 to the Carribean we have not experienced any problems. The food has always been more than adequate & the service very good. Coming from Louisiana were are used to good food so NCL has passed the test for us. We have never had to wait for a table more than a minute or two to be seated. We shared a table one day with a couple who have sailed on Carrnival & RCC and they thought the service & food on the Sun was the best they had ever experienced.

Hope you enjoy your cruise as much as we did!

  8. It seems to me for those who are planning on cruising on the Sun that are so concerned about the odor there is a simple solution - don't book an aft cabin. We had a midship balcony & it was more than adequate. We ate almost every night in the Four Seasons dining room which is aft & never noticed a bad odor & never noticed any odor in the Stardust which is also aft.

  9. We used Alaska Cruise Transfer motor coach that went to Wildlife Conservation Center then to airport where we picked up a rental to drive to Denali. Quite a few passengers used them. We would have used the train but we wanted to get to airport by noon for our car.

On a side note we did the Wildlife Explorer & crab feast in Ketchikan through NCL & loved it. Well worth the price. In Skagway we went with Dyea Dave to Emerald Lake. One of our best Alaskan experiences ever. Dave is very knowledgeable & there were only 8 people on his tour. He gives great narration & stops often.

  10. We took the Sun northbound to Seward from May 30 to June 3. After reading that the Sun's dry dock was cut short prior to our cruise & after reading all the negative reviews here we were very hesitant. I can honestly say that we loved the ship. We have been on 2 other NCL ships & a Disney ship and the Sun is comparable. We did not experience any foul odors, the food was good, the service was excellent, and we did not notice any notable signs of aging. We never had to wait for a table in the main dining rooms or the specialty restaurants. Our food was always delivered promptly & was always hot. Actually I would say that the food was the best we have experienced in 4 cruises. The embarkation process was not long & we immediately went to the Four Seasons for lunch instead of the buffet. There were fewer than 20 people there & we had a quiet lunch. Our cabin was ready just as we were finishing lunch. When we got to our cabin it was very warm so we called guest services & they promptly sent maintenance to take care of the problem. It is true the shower is very small but we came prepared with clips to weigh down the shower curtain. We enjoyed the evening shows & the music was good. We especially liked Brian Rath who sang in the Windjammer Lounge. He sounded a lot like James Taylor. it is true that the ship has an unusual layout & the buffet area is small. After sailing on the Pearl to Alaska I never expected the Sun to measure up but it truly did. We would not hesitate to sail on the Sun again. We had a midship balcony room with ample storage area & our cabin steward took really good care of us. I really don't understand all the negative things posted on cruise critic about the Sun. We certainly did not experience any problems.

  11. We just left Motel Nord Haven this morning. It was very clean & very quiet. It is away from the tourist trap area & only about a 10 minute drive to the park. Breakfast was good & bag lunch for Denali was good. We would definitely stay here again.
