  1. Price of third-party policies is determined by a number of factors such as amount insured, length of trip, age of policyholder, and level of coverage. Cruise line insurance is usually priced as a percentage of cruise fare. Age is not a factor so if cost is your primary concern, cruise line pricing will work in your favor if you are older. ”Better” is a different question. It depends on your needs and what you expect from the policy.
  2. To be absolutely sure the policy meets your needs, I recommend that you work with a professional like Steve Dasseos at Trip Insurance Store or ask GeoBlue directly for clarification. Have them point to the language in the policy that supports each answer. Perhaps their expat policy would work for you if you don't plan to be in the US for more than a couple of months a year.
  3. It is a policy that provides medical coverage when you travel outside the US for no more than 70 days at a time. Coverage is not dependent on mode of transportation. You can travel by plane, train, car, or cruise ship as long as you return to the US within 70 days. Primary health insurance from another provider is acceptable. Note that it is not a comprehensive travel policy because it does not cover travel risks such as cancellation, interruption, or delay.
  4. Typically, travel insurance is secondary meaning you have to file with your primary insurance before submitting a claim under the travel policy. Whatever AON’s other problems are, asking for this documentation is not a ploy to delay. It is just part of the process that might have been avoided if you had known your policy is secondary. You can easily determine that by looking at the summary description on the websites selling travel insurance. The type of policy is a line item. If you buy from a TA, that person should be able to tell you. Ideally, you would buy from a broker who could help you find the right policy and guide you through the claims process when necessary. Otherwise, you just have to read the policy yourself, which is a good idea anyway. For future reference, primary travel insurance is available. Some people prefer it for the convenience of filing one claim and not having to involve their insurance. Others seek it out because it preserves the lifetime limit on foreign travel imposed by Medicare supplement plans.
  5. People always cite medical evacuation as a big concern. Remember that in travel insurance it means hospital-to-hospital transfer if you need a higher level of care. Most often you are moved to the nearest hospital that can appropriately care for you, then you are flown home by commercial air when you are able to travel. You might be accompanied by a medical assistant if necessary, but do not think you are going to be flown directly home in an air ambulance. Nor does evacuation mean air/sea rescue. That is performed by the equivalent of the Coast Guard at no cost to the patient. Nevertheless, medical and associated transportation costs still represent significant risk so insurance is still necessary.
  6. In third-party insurance, CFAR comes at an extra cost but it reimburses only 75% of nonrefundable costs. I’m not sure you really need it in most cases because a comprehensive policy has a pretty inclusive list of covered reasons for cancellation. People complain about travel insurance because they do not understand what their policy covers or how it works. I’m not saying it is easy. Language in the policy is convoluted and requires careful reading. That is why it makes sense to consult a professional Many people here recommend Trip Insurance Store with good reason. They can help you find the policy that covers the risks you are concerned about. What’s more - they can guide you through the claims process if that becomes necessary. The thing that seems to be causing the most problems these days is cancelled or delayed flights. Ask how to protect yourself from that, but also make your own list of things you are worried about then call and ask for recommendations.
  7. Most of the fee based cards offer some travel benefits with the premium cards having the most generous coverage. Since a broken leg is not likely to be a pre-existing condition depending on the timing of booking the cruise, it should be covered.
  8. It depends on whether your annual policy has cancellation coverage. Some do not. You need to notify both your insurance company and Celebrity. Taxes, port fees, and other prepaid expenses will be refunded. You’ll have to file with your insurance company and provide the necessary supporting documentation to be reimbursed the rest, assuming your policy indeed covers cancellation.
  9. For a third-party policy, cost is based on amount insured, length of trip, age of policyholders, and levels of coverage. Do not shop for insurance based on the price of the policy. Similar coverage will cost the same wherever you buy it because states regulate insurance. The advantage of NCL or any other cruise line insurance is that age does not impact the cost, and it includes a Cancel for Any Reason provision if that is important to you. Having said that, there is a lengthy thread on NCL now about someone who had NCL insurance but suffered significant loss after a flight cancellation. It is a good lesson that insurance is quite complex. It is imperative to understand what your policy covers and what to do when problems arise. For that reason, I recommend that you call Trip Insurance Store for guidance. They sell policies from reputable companies and can help you find the policy that is right for you because there is no best cruise insurance for everyone.
  10. In contact but no official notification of cancellation. That decision was made at dinner long after the ship had sailed. Under the circumstances, NCL may decide to provide some kind of compensation, but they are not necessarily entitled to it under the terms of the policy.
  11. If it is granted, it will be a goodwill gesture on the part of NCL separate from the terms of the BookSafe travel policy. You can’t cancel after the ship has sailed. At that point, you are a no-show.
  12. Passenger Name Record It identifies you in the computer reservation system that has information about your itinerary.
  13. Dave bought NCL insurance from the cruise line, not a third-party policy from Steve. You are seeing a screen shot of Dave’s question posted on Steve’ s Q&A forum about insurance. You’ll find the link at the top of the home page for CC boards. Steve has responded. Anyone still curious about the answer can find it there.
  14. Sorry about the health problems; but if you have a travel policy with Allianz, cancellation is one thing you do not have to worry about. You do not need Carnival insurance if you are already covered by another policy that includes cancellation coverage. If you have to cancel, notify the insurance company and Carnival as soon as the decision is made. Carnival will refund taxes, fees, and any prepaid purchases. The nonrefundable cruise fare or other expenses will be covered by insurance. You’ll need to file a claim with Allianz and provide the necessary documentation from the doctor. It may take a while to complete the process, but I expect that you’ll be fully reimbursed.
  15. What a lovely walking route. Makes getting your steps a pleasure, doesn’t it? Do you feel safe all along the way? I ask because some of the parts look wooded and rather isolated.
  16. In the case of NCL insurance, the response would have been the same. The only expenses eligible for reimbursement were those related to Trip Delay. NCL would have paid for air to catch the cruise at the next port. The difference would be that they would have saved most of their trip. Consider buying a third-policy policy that covers Missed Connection or Trip Interruption caused by common carrier. Many people on CC recommend Trip Insurance Store. Call the professionals, tell them your concerns, and let them help you find a policy.
  17. Because the vouchers set the initial deposit date at the time of the cancelled cruise which produced them, CFAR will not be available; however, there are a number of policies that allow a waiver for pre-existing conditions if purchased by final payment. Many people here do business with Trip Insurance Store. It would be a good idea for anyone interested in coverage to consult them in order to get the best advice.
  18. For others seeking this kind of coverage, be aware that insurance will cover only those vouchers that represent expenses for which you originally paid cash. It will not cover any goodwill or bonus FCC granted by the cruise line.
  19. The OP does not say when he notified NCL, only that he purchased new tickets to fly home. If he waited until he got home thinking that insurance would cover all expenses, then he does not qualify for CFAR which requires notification before the ship’s departure. NCL may choose to extend some kind of goodwill compensation, but the OP so far has received the benefits allowed under the terms of the policy.
  20. On what grounds? NCL offered to get them to the next port. Even third-party policies that cover Missed Connection to catch up to your cruise have stipulations such as arriving within X hours or missing X% of cruise before they will reimburse the unused portion of the trip. Nobody pays if you just turn around and go home.
  21. Don’t think so. The CFAR applies up until departure. The OP decided to go home long after that. The claim has already been paid under Trip Delay.
  22. In some instances, airlines provide hotels and meal vouchers; but the OP booked those on his own and has been reimbursed for them by his insurance up to the policy maximum. In no event is the airline responsible for reimbursing the cruise fare or additional expenses for returning home.
  23. The cancellation for any reason to be reimbursed with FCC is good any time up until departure. It would not apply in this case.
  24. https://affinitytravelcert.com/document/pdfs/NCL_Platinum_TX_COI_7_21.pdf Looks like the claim was paid under Trip Delay. $500 is the maximum amount for additional expenses including return air. Failure to make the ship on time is not a covered reason for Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption. At the risk of sounding insensitive, it is vital to read and understand what a policy covers.
  25. Medical evacuation in travel insurance means hospital-to-hospital transfer if you need a higher level of care. It does not mean they will fly you directly or immediately to the US to the hospital of your choice. There are membership associations like MedJet that will transfer you after initial hospitalization, but the typical travel policy will provide for appropriate care locally and fly you home by commercial air when you are able to travel.
