    1) We've already agreed, upthread, that Princess needs to update the phone numbers as ships change oceans, but that Princess is Princess.

It is amusing to think that anything is ever decided on cruisecritic.

You must not have been around for very long...

Regardless of whether princess changes the number, I was pointing out that you've told us princess does both.

No. They update the website when the ship moves.

The ship's number changes based upon where it currently is on the globe and Princess may or may not have updated the web page.

    Well, which is it?

You have posted a lot about the cost...

If someone is receiving a true emergency message like:

"your kid was in a serious accident, and we need to decide whether to continue life support..."

...people probably care little about the cost.

My mom offered to pay for our trip in the summer of 2021.  She and my three daughters are going to share a mini suite, and my husband and I will be in an inside cabin.  I haven't been in an inside cabin in 15+ years.  I don't normally spend a lot of time in my cabin as it is, but I will miss seeing the sun.  Anyone have any helpful tips to get me more excited about an inside cabin?  I've already put in my Amazon cart those goofy porthole stickers...

    Decline the trip.

    Problem solved.

For the record, I don't care which you use.

    Wow!  That's a relief.

And, how gracious of you to refer to the gentle posters here as 'pack of technophobes'...

    Again, why would one care?

Are you a global innovator, and take any negative comment as a personal insult?

I will refrain from bickering with you about nonesense replies, as those posts usually disappear.

With the very newest TVs, there isn't even an "antenna" input you could hijack. Shows are delivered to those TVs as internet streams.

    Antenna input?

I guess I'll leave my Atari console at home, and give up playing pong for a week or two...

Such a pack of technophobes! If you chose not to use the medallion features by using the app the medallion works exactly like the old card that has been canonized by some of you. Nothing to fear at all. I have had to remove erroneous charges on pre-medallion cruises so that dog don't hunt.

Why would one possibly care if another cruiser is using a card or a medallion?

Do you plan on confronting people you encounter using cards, and repeating the above to them?

This is a testimonial to how good the upgraded Internet is on some Princess ships.

With the old Internet on Princess, the trivia would be over before an answer to the first question could be found.

Once, when I was on emerald, a team brought a stack of reference books.

    Obviously, very good sports!

The only thing I'm guilty of -- I like to write down the questions (for review during the current game)

If there is a question that my team doesn't know, I can often noodle on it while the game continues,

and think of something in time to add it to the answer sheet.

Also if there is something that requires a calculation.

My DH managed to switch inputs on the last few cruises using the TV's controls. No additional remote necessary.

That being said it was a bear to reach the HDMI input on wall mounted models. He's bringing a pair of needle nose pliers with him on our next cruise. 😉

Also if you use something like the OP suggested wouldn't it require a unlimited internet package?

Four bucks at Harbor Freight.  Might be good for budget dental procedures as well.

    Any truth in the following?

Have just read elsewhere that the cards in use on the Ruby Princess have no hole in them, and you can't punch a hole in them

Not true.  And bogus info.  Go to Passenger Service Desk,  and they will punch a hole in your card.

3 hours ago, JF - retired RRT said:

    Yes...true.

If you ask PSD to punch a hole, you will be politely refused. We were on the Ruby recently and I asked "is it true, you can't punch a hole?" The answer was "correct, no hole, it will break the card".

Ah, the beauty of cruise critic.   If you don't like one answer, simply read another post.

It's funny how people complain here about calling princess with the same question more than once,

    and getting different answers...

I wonder if we could vote?

FWIW, I agree with Mr. JF.   If it is an rfid card, the purser's desk won't punch a hole for you.

But, maybe I should wait for a few more posts...

As the TV is a JVC (and not a "no name" generic TV), all modern Universal remotes will have a codes for JVC.  I did a quick google and it came up with a number of codes (it is based on the remote).   Luckily; most of the newer TV universal remotes will cycle through the available codes and it is a very easy process.

On Royal, we had a mini suite with two TVs.

We have a princess remote, and an official samsung remote.

The 'real' remote does no good when the tv is locked in hospitality mode.

Um, the first quote you attribute to "Commander" should be "Command Module Pilot", that is, Swigert, not Lovell.

Not according to the snippet I read, which has CMP, LMP, CDR and CC abbreviations.

The text I attributed to 'commander' was CDR, not CMP.

    Okay. Stand by.

    Houston, we've had a problem. We've had a MAIN B BUS UNDERVOLT.

Okay, stand by, 13. We're looking at it.

The Apollo 13 mission was launched at 2:13 p.m. EST, April 11, 1970 from launch complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center. Apollo 13 Launch The space vehicle crew consisted of James A. Lovell, Jr. commander, John L. Swigert, Jr., command module pilot and Fred W. Haise, Jr. lunar module pilot.

(What can I say? It's trivia!)

We once had a question, what does 'Zip Code stand for".

I answered Zonal Improvement Plan.  (which I had read somewhere, along with dancing with the one-eyed lady)

A 'gent' on another team marked it wrong because it was not 'Zone Improvement Plan'.

I appealed to the cruise staffer running the event.

This caused Mr. Fastidious to scream a bunch of profanity at me and leave.

I went into the hall to confront him, and he simply ran away.

I simply can not respect anyone who will not get into a fist-fight and be put off at the next port

over the grading of a trivia answer sheet.

Does anyone know if the television sets on princess cruises have accessible HDMI ports?  I am sure people bring Roku‘s, Kindle fire TVs, and Apple TVs etc, right?

This is answered pretty well for Regal in this thread:

    https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2587947-help-is-hdmi-in-reach-on-regal/

There are some configurations, like some of the sideways inside cabins where you simply can't get your hand into the right place.

You ask about 'princess cruises'.    Princess enjoys being inconsistent.

You may find different brand TVs even on the same ship.

(Royal when it entered service had Vizio and Samsung)

Most of the TVs are setup for 'Hospitality Service', so even with the 'right' remote you may not

    be able to change inputs.

So, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to your question.

Of course, you can always google some secret button press sequence to exit hospitality more.

True.  If you punch a hole, there is a possibility that you will damage the card.  I do not know how likely it is that you will break the RFI loop, but that is what they say will happen.

Below is a typical rfid card.   If you ran the card through the x-ray machine, you could

probably figure out where to punch harmlessly.

The talk of Houston having a problem reminds me of a question that someone live-blogged on a HAL cruise that caused a lot of angst, "Who said 'Houston, we have a problem?'" I forget which astronaut they had as answer, likely either Swigert or Lovell, but neither ever said exactly that, so it would have to be "Tom Hanks".

I read the transcript.  It took two people to say "Houston, ... problem"

    Lunar Mission Pilot:

    Okay, Houston - -

    Commander:

    I believe we've had a problem here.

    Commander:

    Houston, we've had a problem. We've had a MAIN B BUS UNDERVOLT.

    CAPCOM:

Okay, stand by, 13. We're looking at the movie rights.

(for the humor impaired, the last sentence is not factually correct)

BTW, the general theme of this thread is certainly something that should be added the next time someone

asks "Why kind of people will I meet on my princess cruise?"

Hi everybody, I will be onRegal Princess in July.

Anyone can tell me about free instant messaging with whatsapp and Facebook? I’m not sure I could use it to keep in touch with my family at home or only with my Cruise fellows.

    Thanks in advance

I'm really puzzled.  What was removed from the above URL?

    Naughty word?

Any suggestions on where I can find a travel router? And what to look for or a suggested brand?

    Two thumbs up on this:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07P5QDQ1B/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It has a big rechargeable battery, and can also be used as a USB charger.

If you plug in a thumb drive, you can serve local content on generated wifi.

I had a previous model -- but I upgraded, as this can handle hotel login pages.

During a recent hotel stay, the wired connecton in the room was about 10 times

faster than the hotel wifi.    I served the wired connection for my family.

A buddy of mine uses this on long flights -- he fills it up with kids videos -- his kids can all connect their tablets and be served videos.

    Interesting.

Quoting from my Samsung Galaxy S9's -> Settings -> Connections -> Mobile Hotspot and Tethering -> Mobile Hotspot:

"Turn your phone into a WiFi access point.  Up to 10 other devices will be able to use your phone's mobile data to access the internet."

Could you share the Samsung model and settings to accomplish WiFi to WiFi routing?

I did it with a Samsung Galaxy S8+, when in one hotel, I simply could not get my roku to connect to the hotel wifi.

I did that for a while, but it was tiresome; so I spoofed the roku mac address and logged in ... and then carried

    on with the roku.

You do not want to do that afloat.

When you set up your smartphone as a hotspot, it uses it's cellular radio for it's uplink, and it's WiFi radio to connect to the supported devices.

Several current Samsung phones can share their wifi connection.

Seems rather useless, except in cases like this.
