  1. Thank you RonRick, if you look nice and not shabby and I doubt anyone is going to do a pants inspection.  People who sail on luxury lines are going to dress decently and men look dapper with a sports coat and dark jeans and possibly a tie.  I have seen men in kilts on luxury lines and that is totally acceptable.  No I did not ask about undergarments.  I wonder if they will check that?  LOL

Crystal at one time had three dress codes now they are down to two many casual and a few BTO Black Tie Optional nights.  Very few of the penguins seen on the ship.

You will always have the old guard argue with change and I remember when alcohol became all inclusive and people complained about that  guests would get drunk..did not happen.  Of course you have the occasional few that were over served.

When Crystal became open dining a few did not want it and complained but the majority are happy with it as we are.  You just can’t please everyone and you have the right to disagree with any poster respectfully.

  2. I agree with Hambagahle, portions in Italy are not huge and certainly will not compare to a land based Italian restaurant in Milan, Rome , Sorrento , Venice VS any criuise line.

Having travled to Switzerland many times mostly Zurich we have found an abundance of international restaurants that were excellent including small local venues in outside villages with local food and great wine.  We can’t wait to go back and visit our friends there.  Locals for sure know the best venues. we also are not fans of buffets even for salads or antipasto’s.

  3. That is your opinion and we have never been asked to leave any restaurant in black dress jeans on Crystal, Seabourn, Silversea on casual evenings.  Our friends are Titanium and wear dressy jeans and have never had an issue on Regent’s ships over the many years they have sailed.

For Pete sakes it just a black fabric.  As I have mentioned we have seen worse dressed people not properly dressed and we have seen some spectacular women dressed in white jeans in dressed in a sparkly top and high heels and perfect makeup who would never be denied into any dining venue.

Let the Maitre’d decide what is acceptable or not. We mind our own busines and don’t police other people like some others.

Of course shorts and T-Shirts are not acceptable.or torn pants of any kind in the evening.  I dare you to even notice black jeans against black denim creased and well ironed.

  4. Well I guess the fashion police are not following their own policy.  As mentioned by another poster you can’t tell solid black jeans from black slacks.  Really nobody will notice unless you are way too close and check the fabric or a lady in white jeans with a nice top and nice shoes. We have seen people in non jeans look like they just rolled out of bed in their clothes and that’s acceptable?

Black jeans are indistinguishable from black slacks. Unless, of course, the observer gets closer that I would want him/her getting anyway.

Perfectly said and funny as well.  We just went to New York Prime the other night for a birthday event and it is $$$$$ and their dress code is dressy casual and we saw people men and women in dressy jeans white for women and and solid black for men accompanied with nice tops and jackets for gentlemen.

i do object to torn jeans which seems to be the younger generation wearing them and the current fashion at Hugo Boss, Nordstrom’s and Saks for way too much money.

  6. We have devoted Regent friends who have told us that dress jeans black with a collared shirt and jacket have never been a problem for them and trust me they are smart dressers.  Regent may state one thing but they seem not to enforce it if you look nice.  I can see black jeans not blue jeans.  We don’t pay attention to what other people wear anyway.

  7. We use to take a bottle home with us but now we use a luggage shipping service and that is not allowed and you can’t take it on in the planes cabin unless it is bought in duty free and delivered to the aircraft.  Here in the US you may encounter a confiscation from international to domestic flights.  This has happened to us.  The TSA does not care if you bought the alcohol in duty free.

  8. Everyone should be special on a luxury cruise regardless of what suite you are in.  Dining with officers is not important to us nor do we ask for special attention or ask questions.  We have been in Captains quarters and tables and frankly it was a bore and just a show.  We enjoy fun people and laughter not staunchy folks who think they are better than we are and they don’t discuss their level in society or class of suite they are in.  That’s called manners.

  9. I think you are wrong about generations as we have seen younger and many generation X people who are successful cruising luxury lines.  We have met people who have high positions at Google and Apple who are enjoying luxury cruising.  We travel five months out of the year and you would be surprised at the age of these people who travel first class on Singapore and Emirates two of the best airlines.  Business class no way and use our miles.  BA no way...hate that airline as they cut their service in first and business.

Times are changing and us older peeps need to get to get used to it.  It’s no longer Downton Abbey on cruise ships

  10. The fact is the cruising industry is attracting younger and wealthier people way before we could afford luxury cruising probably including you and many others. Change will happen by way of demand even if you don’t like it and no one will be able to stop it.

The old guard of the luxury lines are sadly disappearing.  That being said, younger folks who have great jobs and can afford luxury lines will make a huge difference in luxury cruises and the money to these lines and what they want is all that matters.  You are not going to change it.

  11. Nobody can comment on a luxury line i.e. Crystal if you have not sailed on them and nobody should comment about Viking as well which seems to beat out all the categories.  They must be doing something right.

We have a 24 day cruise on the Explorer this year and I am biting my tongue and hoping for the best as our previous Regent cruises did not come close to our Crystal experiences.  The Explorer looks wonderful and glossy but that is not why we cruise.  Service, food, entertainment and crew should be the hallmarks of any luxury line.  We booked the MS on the Explorer which appears to be beautiful but in the end it’s the other services that matter.

Thanks - I didn't take it badly.    I see all these discussion about upgrades but, having sailed more that 200 days on the Odyssey class ships,  I think the best rooms are the veranda suites mid ship.  We actually check the "no upgrade" button on our reservation because we would hate to be upgraded to a spa suite for free.  Now if American Airlines wants upgrade us to business class to Australia next month,  FOC,  I'll take it 🙂 Hear that AA? If you're listening, you owe us big time!

I don't think AA is listening.

A suite for us is with two bathrooms and a large bedroom with solid doors dividing the sitting area.  If we can’t obtain a large suite on a cruise we look for connecting PH suites which gives us two bathrooms and two walk-in closets.  Yes, we do have to pay a supplement for this.

  13. I agree with you on a few points.  Umi Uma formerly Silk Road is very popular and we love it.  Prego varies depending on what you order as food is all subjective anyway.

I will defend the crew as they truly mean it’s their pleasure and they are a happy crew and well cared for by the company so I would not say it is disingenuous they love their job.  The crew will go out of their way even if it’s not in their job responsibilities and find someone who can solve a problem that is outside of their job.  Being proactive as a crew member is a great asset to Crystal.

I hope most of your cruise lived up to your expectations.  Food is variable to ones personal taste and that I agree.
