  1. I wonder why the canceled the one nighters. Yes they are a lot of work for the crew, but the on board spending on the Cruise to Nowhere must be MUCH higher then on the last day of a 10 day cruise. We just returned from the 4-4-14 CTN on the Gem and people could not spend their money fast enough.

  2. If you are a single guy, do NOT waste your money on BN. They will happily take your MONEY, because they don't want to be stuck with unsold cabins, but they don't want YOU. Expect to be treated like crap. Most of the other passengers don't want you either, they come from from clubs where, sight unseen, you aren't allowed and expect the same thing on ship.

There are a few single women, I've heard comments both negative and positive. Clodia, have you been on Oriana before? I was just on last month, short review posted under Best Ships For Dancing.

Sorry you had a bad time Bob. We have been on 4 Nude Cruises and met many single guys who were enjoying themselves.

  3. And thank you for contributing to the problem by responding for no legitimate reason to a post I made over 18 months ago.

Well I see your back again, but you really don't want to be here. Just ignore us over here. We will be ok without you.

  4. And he started it over a year ago. Now someone, for no reason, digs up and reopens a thread that had been inactive for 9 months, opening the flood gates for unnecessary rehashing of a topic that should just be allowed to rest in peace.

I really wish Cruise Critic would lock threads that have been inactive for an extended time, and I also wish posters would read the date of the posts they're replying to.

If you feel this is too old for you, then don't look. Others seem to enjoy it.

  5. Daughter is 23, a senior in university, a six year National Guard vetran who served 1 year in Afghanistan, and if fact she had a paper to write and a midterm the week after the cruise to study for, and math problem sets, as well as applying / interviewing for physical therapy graduate school. She didn't need her computer for accessing social media.

Not being able to complete the work early in the cruise and knowing it still had to be completed, definitely made her cruise less enjoyable.

For purposes of total disclosure, I did not read the entire KBYG document. I was mostly focused on not breaking any of the wine related rules. If I had read it, discovered power strips with surge protectors were not allowed and not brought the power strips, the result would still have been the same.

I plan of getting a Monster strip for my next cruise. I appreciate the tip!

I don't enjoy posting anything on Cruise Critic and rarely do it anymore. If it is not totally positive, the 'Cruise Critics' become critical. This was just meant as a cautionary post for those that need power strips. Lesson learned - bring your own approved power outlets and don't count on HAL to provide one.

Why didn't you give her a turn with one of the few outlets in the cabin to charge her laptop? If the plug could not fit, couldn't she use yours for a little while? You know, share.

  6. Sailing on a cruise is a "first world" luxury. Having my personal property seized for no good reason and being lied to by a company employee is also a "first world" problem. Just sayin' :o

In all honesty, I wouldn't stop sailing if curling irons etc were banned if I knew ahead of time and I could bring an alternative. If someone else feels like they would stop sailing because of this, that's their prerogative. I think HAL would probably lose a lot of female passengers to other cruise lines if they continued to take our property the way they did on this last cruise. Just being honest. It may not be an attitude all agree with, but it's true.

Perhaps you were not lied to, but rather given the wrong info, in good faith. Someone gave out that directive, right or wrong the rank and file workers had to carry it out.

  7. I agree. There needs to be consistency about the rules, and everyone involved should know them. Personnel should enforce rules that are clearly written and available to the customer. I completely agree.

I wasn't really focused on that aspect of it. My comments were more about the reactions that said that, if was decided that a curling iron and/or flat iron were no longer allowed on ships, people would not cruise (or leave the house). That is what I meant by having perspective -- allowing that to dictate your ability to travel as you wish.

For me, it is a more introspective issue: how do we judge ourselves? How do we judge others? If, heaven forbid, I went through a windshield, would I never leave the house again?

At the risk of being cliche', Mother Teresa was not a "beautiful" person, but she was a *beautiful* person.

I suppose, in a nutshell, it troubles me that so much pressure is put on people (especially women) that they feel that in the face of potential failure to appear in a certain way, they would choose to hide in a cabin or relinquish the privilege of travel. We are, in my opinion, so much more than our physical manifestation, and what is most important in determining our "fitness" to be in society is what is inside our hearts and minds, not how we style our hair... and that is the criteria by which we should judge ourselves.

I agree with this, but on the flip side I do appreciate a good looking women. Now before you think bad about me, I not talking about some Barbie Doll, I mean any women who takes great time and effort to look the best THEY can. And maybe I shouldn't talk because I'm NO prize.

Also we all know if you call any cruise line 10 times, you will get 10 different answers.

I'm having fun with this conversation, I hope everyone else is.:)

  8. I think Carnival owes them some thing but certainly not $5,000 a month for the remainder of their lives. I guess they are trying for the moon and hoping they get some thing in between. My problem with Carnival is that they had no recovery plans. The alternate power plant was never intended to provide power for the entire ship. So then the question should have been asked: "So how do we take care of 5,000 people for 3 or 4 days or more?" There answer seems to have been" Do nothing."

On every cruise I have been on, we passed many ships night and day. Surely, one of those ships could have provided emergency help, like meals. Maybe I am making this too simple but I do believe there should have been some contingency plan.

So how about $5,000 but for only one month. I think all their pain and suffering should be gone by then.

    That happened!

  9. Nope. You're not understanding it yet.

What some women are upset about is that their NOT BANNED items were confiscated because....

Just for the record I am now in complete agreement with what ever you ladies say. My wife told me too.

  10. QUOTE - I know a lot of people don't understand why women would get upset over this. But let's just put it into perspective. Let's say that you were getting ready for formal night guys, and Holland America decided that they wouldn't allow any pants on board! :D

Well that brings us back to the Clothing Optional cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam;)

  11. Hi copper

You brought back great memories for me

My first cruise was on the home lines Homeric in 1986 or 87 r/t ny

    To Bermuda

We took my 18 yr old son with us and we all got hooked

He's been on numerous cruises since and has always owned his own boat

    Cinnamon123

Our first cruise was on Home Lines, Atlantic also in 86 or 87 R/T to NY to Bermuda. I remember docking next to the Homeric in Bermuda and even being allowed to go on board to tour the sister ship. No one allows that anymore.

  12. So let me see if I understand this, some women are upset about banned curling irons because they want to curl their straight hair and some are upset about flat irons because they want to straighten their curly hair. :D lol

Which ever you chose I'm sure you will look great on your cruise.

After reading all the ladies responses I'm just smart enough to relize that its not a good Idea to get in between a women and her Curling Iron.

    HAPPY CRUISING

  13. It sounds like the security guard that handled this is not the ship security officers but the ones who are contracted out by HAL to handle embarkation. It's possible that the guard works in the HAL terminal one day and then Carnival the next and may simply gotten confused. Especially with what the one poster received from her Carnival PVP.

What is unsafe on one ship, is unsafe on all ships.

  14. Perhaps if they start seizing razors because they or their chargers could have frayed wires or be held together with scotch tape you could help with the bottom line by visiting the spa for a shave on formal night. You might look like heck the rest of the cruise but if you consider it OK for women then it shouldn't be a problem for men either.

We girls just love wandering around with untamed hair or bed head. It really adds to the vacation.

It is an idea that is not going to fly unless they want to lose a large percentage of their female cruisers when the word spreads.

I'm not on HAL's side, just offering one possible explanation. And men's razors don't produce heat.

  15. Hmmmm... I wonder how the stylists in the salon managed to get their curling and flat irons onboard under these (ridiculous) guidelines?

I'm sure this would not apply to onboard stylists in the salon as they would have their equipment inspected by a 'competent person' appointed by HAL to insure its safety. While I'm sure that all the ladies on CC have fairly new equipment that is in very good condition, other ladies have old equipment with loose or frayed wires that have been repaired with scotch tape. Those are dangerous and a fire hazard. One of the greatest dangers at sea is FIRE!

Other lines may follow suit. And it would help their bottom line to have all you ladies visiting their salon on formal night.

  16. If it PLUGS IN and HEATS UP, then they don't want it on the ship for safety reasons. They catch what they can but don't get them all.

If they found someone had a 'one cup coffee maker' with a heating element, they would take that too yet there is no written rule against them.

Heaven forbid one of these heating element devices starts a fire on the ship, then people would yell 'why do they allow these hazardous things'.

    Its just for FIRE SAFETY
