  1. I do. In Europe nearly monthly for work. Plenty of times in Athens. Not necessarily. In the example of my checkin, I was escorted through security and passport control directly to the aircraft. Made it with plenty of time. Obviously this isn't everyone's experience every time they fly. What I took issue with was the assertion when you said that anything under 2 hours wasn't acceptable for an international check in-- that is not true. It is usually a 1 hour cutoff. Again, in this scenario the chances of making that flight are slim and the OP should make alternate plans, but if they arrived at the airport in less than 2 hours, they could certainly try to make it and wouldn't be prevented from doing so by any rules.
  2. That I agree with and have experienced, just not in the NYC area. Mainly in places that Uber/Lyft don't have as big of a presence. I'm just making the point because frankly I would recommend to the OP that Uber/Lyft in this situation is most likely the easiest/most cost effective solution to get to Cape Liberty.
  3. It is acceptable-- I've checked in for an international flight 1hr and 1min before departure which is the actual cutoff to fly. But in this particular case there are too many outside forces that can conspire and it would most likely not work out.
  4. I don't think thats really accurate. I've never had an Uber/Lyft driver turn down a ride in NYC and I've taken them as far as Philly before.
  5. You'll recognize her for the most part with the exception of the cabins. The public spaces are nearly essentially unchanged, right down to the furniture, from 1959 which is extraordinary. Total time capsule that's been lovingly taken care of.
  6. Had a great night onboard in 2019. Compared very favorably price wise with just about any 4-5 star hotel in town-- Rotterdam is not a very expensive place to begin with when compared to a lot of other major European cities. You do have to take a taxi or Uber to or from the hotel as it is out on its own and a bit of a walk to anything. The ship itself was my main reason for staying there so it wasn't that much of an issue although I did venture over to Hotel New York (the former Holland America offices) which was also a treat. The tours onboard are very insightful and the ship's public spaces are immaculately preserved. Onboard food and bars are great-- the Ocean Bar is like stepping back in time. If you are a ship enthusiast or a mid century enthusiast staying here is a must. The rooms are very nice but they are updated and modernized in a way that the rest of the ship's preserved public spaces are not. I think the original cabins were thought to be too small so most were enlarged by knocking down walls etc and putting in new fittings. Most of this is evident in the bathrooms which are large and modern-- the bedrooms still have a vintage feel although you can tell they aren't original. Couldn't recommend the SS Rotterdam enough for a quick overnight-- I wish I had planned for 2 nights instead of 1.
  7. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/21/nyregion/carriage-horses-new-york.html Theres two sides to every story but theres a big movement to have carriage horses banned like they have been in other major cities like Chicago.
  8. Just take Amtrak to either the Newark Airport station (you'll take a monorail over to the terminals and then onto your hotel) or some people like to stay at the Newark Doubletree which is located adjacent to the Newark Penn Station in downtown and then its just a quick Uber ride over to Cape Liberty in the morning. I wouldn't use a New Jersey cab-- the quality is horrendous for the most part.
  9. Generally about $64 for 20 minutes and $25 per every 10 minuets after. Plus tip for the driver. No, Central Park is massive and you only see a very, very small section of it on the South side. If you did one that covered the whole park (which I'm pretty sure isn't even offered) it would take literally all day and cost a fortune. Yes-- there is no place to store it either at the point of joining the carriage or onboard. The carriages are in no was accessible. I believe the only thing they will take onboard is a foldable wheelchair. Also keep in mind that horse drawn carriages are very controversial at the moment and there is huge movement to have them banned in NYC due to mistreatment of the animals.
  10. Our Delta flight from Athens to JFK didn't even show up at all due to a last minute mechanical-- had to be rebooked on Air Canada through Montreal-- not fun. The cruise line is padding time a bit-- in all likelihood you'll arrive early to Athens but they don't want to commit to it in case there is an unforeseen delay which can happen. It's about a 45 minute slog to the airport, possibly more with morning traffic-- unless the ship is cleared and you can self disembark around 730-8am at the latest this is going to be very tight.
  11. Thats going to take an absurd amount of time. You could take an Uber/Lyft for about $130 from Oceanside to LAX and it will take a little over an hour vs several hours with the plan you outlined. As mentioned I believe the train isn't running the full route right now so there will be an additional bus connection run by Amtrak making this even more inefficient. The Uber to LAX would most likely beat the train to Union Station, let alone the additional step of a bus and then hotel shuttle bus. The amount of time you'll be waiting for transfers would be maddening if it were me when it would be so easy to avoid all of it.
  12. Even in the St Lawrence cell service is spotty while underway. Also your phone will connect to the nearest available cell source which will invariably be the ships cell service and most likely not included in your TMobile plan. Yes-- you will not have any outside cell service once in the open ocean. Really after Quebec City the St Lawrence is very wide and cell service will be limited if you can pick up the signal at all. From experience on this itinerary I would not plan on having reliable outside cell service any time you are underway.
  13. You don't want to use a traditional taxi in Baltimore if you can avoid it. Uber is just under $30 to BWI (assuming that it is BWI) and takes about 20-25 minutes.
  14. The short answer is the beach. Renting a Boston Whaler and using it to sightsee/snorkel could be fun. Going to see the caves. Catamaran sail/tour. Lots of things to do for teens.
  15. So the question is a bit broad-- as you've seen there are literally thousands of hotels to choose from. Your budget for June will put you into a solid 4 star hotel in a good location and possibly even a nice 5 star hotel with a good deal or stretching it a little bit. Do you have any particular brand loyalty either earning points (or possibly using points to maximize pricing)? That would help focus the question and help us make a better rec.
  16. Wow-- that might be the shortest call I've ever heard there. If they do leave the Dockyard they should do it with a ships tour then to make sure getting back is not stressful.
  17. Give us a range you consider moderate. Given you are from New York, for the most part pricing in Honolulu will be on par with non holiday hotel pricing in Manhattan.
  18. Always tip in local currency-- you could always tip more because it doesn't cost you as much. By tipping in US Dollars you are requiring someone to go and exchange that for their own currency. Why would US currency be widely accepted in Canada? There are stores that do but they will rake you over the coals as they can set their own arbitrary exchange rates-- its generally a horrible deal and an easy way they take advantage of tourists. If you don't want to exchange a bunch of cash just use a credit card that doesn't have international transaction fees.
  19. We golfed an afternoon at The K Club about 45 minutes away from Dun Laoghaire which we did with a car service. They rent clubs for both Arnold Palmer courses on property. Easy to book tee times online.
  20. Advice, especially if you are there for an overnight, is to get out of the Dockyard and go see the island. Hamilton is an easy ferry ride as is St George and both have lots to do and lots of charm. Its not going to be beach weather but a nice walk along one of the beaches could bee nice. Lots to do beyond the tourist shopping mall they've made the Dockyard into.
  21. And maybe a tiny bit less of a bar/drinking culture...most days.
  22. Both Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are administered by the National Park Service and admission is free-- you're just paying for the transportation to and from both islands. You can upgrade the Ellis Island experience to a hard hat tour which will take you to the other side of the island which isn't open to the general public-- this is where the island's hospital complex is which is in slight ruin having been abandoned for decades. Frankly the Statue of Liberty is more impressive from the outside than inside and, from a time savings perspective, might not be worth getting off the ferry there. I know you had mentioned doing both the normal Circle Line tour, their evening cruise, and also now Ellis Island-- all of these will be very redundant. If I were considering all three, and wanted to physically go to Ellis Island, I would drop the evening tour and head into the city and grab drinks or dinner instead. You'll end up getting great views of lower Manhattan on both the normal Circle Line trip and ferry to Ellis Island. You could but just grabbing a taxi or an Uber will be faster and a bit easier. I would book tickets in advance just in case, although there usually is decent last minute availability.
  23. And you should go see them-- just stay in Santa Monica. Hollywood strip isn't far away and an easy car ride or Uber. You'll be a lot happier with yourself coming home to the beach at night.
  24. Also you'll see in more touristy areas like Murano (glass) and Burano (lace) in Venice-- the art of the hard sell is alive and well. A representative will follow you relentlessly. Just be aware going in and be ready to walk away.
